Test the speed of your broadband

Monday 13 September

Our new broadband speed campaign is into its third week now! But if you’ve not tested your broadband speed yet, there’s still time. Click the link below and share the results with us.

Most broadband networks suffer from congestion at peak times (for example, 8pm-10pm), so try our speed tester at different times of day to get a better idea of your average speed.

If speed isn’t what you were expecting, it might be time to let your ISP know. We’ve put a page together with the contact details for all the major ISPs – as well as for OFCOM and the Advertising Standards Authority. You can let them know how you feel about the speed you were advertised and the speed you’re actually getting.

As ever, we want your comments, so please keep telling us how you’re getting on – and don’t forget to take part in our poll!

Hey Jon Did the test a few times at 17:30 which think is busy time but managed to get to 12mb/s which I am well happy with. Sky states a maximum of 20mb/s and told me I would get 10-20 so pretty fair :). Have been with Sky since they launched there broadband and have been extremely pleased all round. Gavin ps love the show keep up the good work !

Our "up to 8Mbps" connection connects between 6-7mbps because we are lucky enough to be very close to nearest exchange. A friend of mine is paying for 8mbps and getting 50kbps because he's far from his exchange. Our ADSL router states our current connection of 7616kbps up and 448kbps down. Tried your speed test, on two machines on our network. Your speed test on a slow machine resulted in a reading of 2.2mbps! On a fast machine (quad core) it was 5.6mbps! On other speed test sites, the speed usually registers around 6mbps. I check it fairly regularly, and reboot the router if it is unusually low. I think maybe your flash tester is not as accurate as it could be. Slower machines can't update quick enough because Flash performance is too slow, resulting in a wrong reading. Also, stop bashing ISPs, it's BT's copper network that's limited over distance. How else are ISPs supposed to advertise a service if they don't kow how far you are away from your nearest exchange? That's for you to know, not them. Education is the key.

I have just taken the broadband speed test. BT Broadband, what a joke, they advertised and I pay for "up to 20Mbps", I get 1.4Mbps download and 0.36Mbps Upload (Not even close however you look at it). I live in a fairly well populated town not the back of beyond approximately two miles away from an exchange. How close do you have to live to get the advertised speeds? has anyone ever got these type of speeds? To get an engineer to confirm their not so fast service is £80 fix it or not!

My broadband speed seemed to go down quite suddenly - noticeable because there is no way I can watch youtube clips any more. It was 0.23 Mbps download so I phoned (with great trepidation) the BT helpline. They always seems to think it is my problem - my filters have been removed and put back so often they can do it on their own now! They said the speed would improve over the following 24 hours and it is now up to 0.71 Mbps dowload and 0.34 mbps upload........ surely I am paying for more than this? I suggest we pay for the connection we actually receive rather than the one they sell.

Well Jon, I pay for up to 10 mB but I have tested it several times at different times of the day. My download varies from 3 to 9mB but my upload never gets above 0.47mBand I am on Virgin media- cable! I thought it was supposed to be fast and reliable but quite frankly its neither.

I've tested it at various times of day and night and I must say Virgin 50Mb rocks. Slowest I get is 47Mb at 1830 and fastest 50Mb at 1000. Upload is great aswell slowest 1.28Mb, fastest 1.48Mb. The published is 50Mb and 1.5Mb so I think they are living up to their claim. Though when I was on old tech (copper wire from BT) I only got fastest 3.3Mb and 368Kb, so it's time the others caught up. Fibre is the future (for now)....

Getting 19Mb/s from my VM cable connection so perfectly happy with this. Surely you should have a vote option for "As fast as expected" to allow for this? IMO just having "Faster than" or "Slower than" options will not show a complete picture.

Tis is not acceptable I was offered an upgrade from a 2 mb speed when it was still Tiscali and paid the extra for 8mb which never happened in 4 years.I waited for TALK TALK to improve the speed That never happened it got worse as peak times went from 3 hours to up to 6 hours I contacted the CEO of Talk Talk who did reply and got his tech manager for the group to look into the problem. He after a while admitted they thought the average of 1.5 was reasonable in a "upto"8mb package. He actually stated he personally would be happy with that speed! Funny when I signed up those imortal words "upto" was not in the advert(yes I saved the page ) but dsadly Tiscali is no more

I'm no techno wizard, but is the MAIN issue here not with the ISP's but with BT and the cabling/capacity of the various Telephone Exchanges around the country? I'm getting a very poor 0.64mbps on a SKY broadband that allows UP TO 20mbps. Should we not be protesting against the 'owners' of each exchange???

my speed on my laptop (wireless) is 0.37 Mbps (down); 0.23 Mbps (up). i'm 15 miles from norwich, norfolk and only 1/3 of a mile off the main road. I've complained repeatedly to BT over the years, no use. But the biggest mistake I made was swapping to TalkTalk, who promised free BB. what a lie! Apparently I'm "not in their area" despite having them for phone & line rental, so BB is £10 a month, and it's now HALF the speed BT was! Plus I'm locked into a contract till March 2011. I tried complaining to TalkTalk but all you get is foreigners who dont dont understand you & they blame your equipment settings and after 20 mins I end up hanging up in frustration. I shall test my main pc (hard wired) tomorrow.

The broadband speed check for my home came back at 3.5 at a check done by a Sky salesman in my local shopping centre. I said this is disgusting that companies can be allowed to make these types of claims (up to 20Mg speed). This is just flouting the system and misleading the customer. Other industries can't get away with this type of misleading promotion. I asked the salesmen if he'd be happy to buy a car - it will have up to 4 wheels. He didn't see the logic!

Im glad that I made the saving of £19 a month! However I have noticed reading through the various internet blogs about this UPTO issue and those that pay for Virginmedia 50meg seem to always get the amount that they pay for! How amazing that the service providers manage to give those that can afford £50 a month what they pay for, but those of us who are students on a tight budget get shafted!!!

I'm with BT and just to add insult to injury they have just informed me that I will be charged £5 every time I exceed my down load limit of 10GB. SEE BELOW. Monthly usage limit – If you want to use more than the monthly usage allowance included in your broadband package, from 1 November 2010 additional usage will be charged at 5GB for £5 (instead of 1GB for £1). I contacted them via India and was informed that even if it was 1GB over on the last day of the month I would be charged £5. Judging from the other comments there must be other factors effecting Virgin's broadband speed. AOL apparently offer the best deal in my area for broadband, and I have been with them for 5+ years at least. I pay £9 per month for unltd. usage and a download speed of 4.57Mbps and an upload speed of 0.34Mbps (according to your speedtest). I'm moderately happy with the service they provide me with, but they advertise their speeds of 'up to 8Mbps' which I receive just over half of and my service sometimes 'plays up' and cuts out every now and again. But for unltd. usage and the price I pay, I can hardly complain. Apart from the false advertising.

However, there are no websites that could deliver content at 10M to thousands of people at the same time, and there are very few applications that demand that kind of speed. Pure downloads (mp3's avi's rar's etc...) cannot be delivered from servers at close to that speed, so unless you have 20 or 30 people in your house most people shouldnt notice lower broadband speeds. Their tech support has now said I will be lucky to get 8meg which is nowhere near what their email said I would get if I renewed my contract for another 12 months so I feel that they have got me to resign with false promises of faster connection speeds.

It seems to me to be a very fair way of advertising a product which is likely to differ widely due to a number of factors outside the ISP’s control. On my package I know what I should be getting (about 3 meg), I know that someone on the same package but nearer the exchange can expect 4,5 or 6 meg - so selling the package as 'up to 8meg' is a fair reflection on the speed you can expect. My ISP gives a more accurate likely speed when you are in the sign up process - if you don't like what their estimated speed is then you can go elsewhere. My question to you Jon is 'if you take away the 'up to' part of the strap line - what do you replace it with? If my ISP said exactly 3 meg broadband it leaves them wide open to allegations of not supplying what they have specified when at busy times speeds may drop and quiet times speeds may rise? I understand that in some cases the 'up to' strap line may have been used to miss sell a product but generally it fits perfectly to describe a product which is notoriously none constant.

Hi Jon I ran your speed test around 2pm to 3pm and returned a download speed of roughly 1.61 mbps and upload speed of 0.23 mbps; I also ran the two linked speed tests from other sites and they both ran faster (1.80/1.90 downloads and 0.24 uploads). My advertised speed with Orange is 2.2 mbps but I am paying roughly £15.00 from an old contract which I do not want to renew as I would be locked into a new 18 month one, so until I change ISPs I am charged high for a low speed conection. I'm on BT Broadband Option 3. With line rental costs I'm paying £39 a month, for up to 20mb. I went onto BT's speed test when looking at what packages are available for my area. It surprisingly told me that my line is currently configured to allow 5,000 kbs. I did the speed test and it came out at 4,000, with a comment of a max of 7,000 kbs is achievable. Why am I paying for 20mb when BT have set my line to allow no more than 7mb.

I just tested my broadband speed. I'm with Virgin and have an up to 10mbps package. I'm pleased to report that it averaged at 9.5mbps on download. However, the upload speed was rubbish, coming in at about 0.4mbps. I had expected better then that, but not sure if that's just me with unrealistic expectations. Other then that, I would recommend Virgin as a broadband supplier. No other issues to report at all.

Like some others have allready said this internet speed test is not very reliable, it gave me a reading of 1mb download while all other speed tests say 9.5mb download out of the up to 10. So before people go moaning at their ISPs because there speeds were really slow check other speed checkers first.

I cannot believe how slow my broadband speed is on AOL We are paying for 8meg, we are not even getting half a meg. I have noticed how slow downloads are and they seem to vary from day to day. I didn't realise it was because the actually download speed is far less than expected, that is if your tester is absolutely accurate. This has certainly been a real eye opener.

Sorry, me again - I forgot to mention that when I spoke to Sky they explained that the variance in speed was related to a 'contention ratio' - ie if the line from the exchange is capable of 10 mps and you are the only one using that line you 'can' get the whole 10 mps, but if there are 9 others using the same line from the exchange then you will be lucky to get 1/10th of the speed (ie 1mps) - far comment as this would appear to make sense, but when my neighbour two doors away gets a fairly consistent 3.5 mps download at any time of day I became confused. Could you shed any light on this as we use the same exchange?

Here is how broadband and fiber optic generally work out (yes, fiber optic costs a lot more but rarely makes much difference so avoid buying unless you live in the centre of a good city!!!): Basic: 1M/bits or less (e-Mail/General Use Only!) : Most people in Rural Areas/Villages (Good amount of people!!!) Standard: 2 - 4M/bits (SD Images/Video/Games) : Most people in Towns/Near Cities (Majority of people!!!) Good: 5 - 8M/bits (720p HD Images/Video/Games) : Most people in a City Centre/Major Towns (Fair amount of people!!!) Luxury: 10M/bits or more (1080p HD Images/Video/Games) : Lucky people who live in a City Centre/Major Towns (A small Minority) As you can see here, quoted speeds should be based on post code and charge you based on those 4 categories so that pricing is fairer.

I applaud your campaign to get UK ISPs to be honest about the products they're offering, but unfortunately the speedtest on your website is fatally flawed; I have a 50Mb cable connection that consistently gives 48-51 Mb/s on both speedtest.net and real-world file downloads from a variety of servers around the world, yet every time I run your speedtest (at various of times of day and night) it only manages to serve me the test data at between 6 and 14 Mb/s. I worry that if this inaccuracy extends beyond very fast connections like mine to the average ADSL user in the UK then the result will be a totally wrong picture of broadband speeds in this country, which can only damage your very worthy campaign to get ISPs to come clean about what people actually get for their money.

0.51Mb download 0.35Mb upload. Same old story of distance from BT exchange using their standard telephone line. Obviously no investment from out of date monopoly that is BT to update as speed has not really increase in 4yrs. Unless living in large conurbation we are reliant on completely out of date technology, despite living 45miles from centre of London. With the reliance we have on the internet this is simply no longer acceptable in 2010. BT should be forced to invest or step aside.

I've been with AOL broadband for 8 years. Moved to their Platinum 3 price plan in July 2010. I was told that I would get at least 9Mbps download speed from a maximum of 24Mbps. I've done a number of tests and just did the Gadget Show one as well, download speed 3.73Mbps and upload 0.7Mbps. They say that they are upgrading the excahnges with AOL's own equipment but I'm not seeing it yet. How can they advertise speeds that they can't possibly achieve for customers when they switch over. Poor show AOL!!

I'm on virgin 10mb broadband. I've just run the test and got great results of 9.15mb download speed which I think is what all ISP's should provide. I used to pay for 20mb broadband from virgin media and tested the speed from time to time, the results where pleasing, always hitting download speeds of over 19mb! I know many of my friends on other ISP's that check theirs speeds and the majority of times didn't get near what they were paying for which I think everyone would agree is just wrong and must stop!

On a 2 Mbps connection with Talk Talk but only 0.88 downspeed and 0.39 upspeed. Luckily nearly all my web activity is slow time (except for streaming which can be a pain - luckily I don't do it much). The problem is likely to be where I live as it is old copper cable phonelines untouched since the 60s/70s and some way from the exchange. I am about to move closer to the exchange so hopefully that will help. Now don't get me on to ISPs and their costs/contracts for moving house...

Hi, The use of "up to" with respect to contention and the undefined speed of the websites you visit and their geographic limitations is perfectly sensible. The ADSL line speed "up to" should be made a lot clearer though before sign up as the top speed is defined by the length and quality of wire. We run a fixed wireless service that does not suffer the phone line problems but still use "up to" as we have no way of guaranteeing what speed you will get once you leave our motorway and head off into the internet itself. We have a good explanation of what "up to" means on our website www.kijoma.net, just click on "up to". All ISPs should explain this to people. Bill

I'm a victim of a little knowledge here so have not been surprised to have an average download speed of about 4.5Mbps over the 3 years + I've had Broadband & been using the Thinkbroadband speed checker. Two things that are of concern of late however: 1: I did my monthly check this morning & got a speed of 5649 Kbps Down & 509 Kbps Up. However I downloaded Thinkbroadband's Free Broadband Meter & whilst a large download has been running I have had between 500 Kbps & 1000 Kbps Down. Odd - maybe I'm missing something. 2. A few weeks ago I was rung by my ISP (Who have changed their name from Pipex to Opal) to tell me about their new faster broadband - "Up to 24Mbps!" they said. I explained that my local exchange could only offer up to 8Mbps & of that I only actually got half that on average. "No!" they said "Their new equipment meant up to 24Mbps!" When they checked what I might actually get, they confirmed that it would be up to 8Mpbs. "Exactly!" I said. However they wanted to argue that I should still pay to upgrade because on their new equipment Up to 24Mbps was way better than Up to 8Mbps. I won't argue with the increased potential, but the reality is still 4.5/8. That's the point at which I put the phone down but less savvy shoppers may have been relieved of their cash. Even more worrying than your initial concerns I would say.

They should be made to advertise a guaranteed MINIMUM speed and not be able to use a possible max on a quiet 5am when everyone is asleep. I`m suppose to get up to 8mb, I don`t even get anywhere up to 512 let alone UP TO 8mb lol. & as for trying to watch the vid clip on this webpage well that`s out of the question, unless I pause it for at least 10-15 mins & then I might be able to watch it!!!! Catching up anything on I-player is def a no no. I informed my ISP of my plight, they did a test, & said they shouldn`t have taken me on as a customer, & if I want to they`ll release me of my contract with no fee to pay as I`m paying for something I`m never going to get anywhere near. Good of them in a way I guess but whoever I choose to go with next I`m assuming I will have the same problem, right?! I might as well just sit & watch paint dry, it`ll probably be quicker than any speed I will achieve on the net. I did a line test & this is the result: ============================= Download speed achieved during the test was - 95 Kbps For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps. Additional Information: Your DSL Connection Rate :256 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 288 Kbps(UP-STREAM) IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps =============================== I only live approx. 510 metres from the telephone exchange, it wouldn`t make any difference if I lived right next door to it as a majority of the cables are under water in my area, & BT need to update all the wiring. It`s so bad that no one will ever be thieving that copper even if it was left lying around...Maybe that`s why BT don`t or won`t upgrade. lol. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could possibly do to get BT to upgrade their system???? & what ISP should I look at to even get 512kb at a knock down price even though I`ll never achieve that speed? The speed I could get, on this line, according to every test I`ve done, is at it`s best 0.256mb, boooohoooo. HELP!!!!

My old package was touted at 'up to 8Mbit' and the best I got was 2Mb down and 400Kbit upload. I have just regraded my package with Freedom2 Surf (now part of Pipex) which is advertised at 'Up To 24Mbit download and 1Mbit upload'. On their ADSL2 checker prior to regrade it said I should be capable of speeds around 6Mbit download but that BT would vary the line speed over several days to identify the best speed. My results show around '3.87Mbit download' and '0.87 Mbit upload' My view? For something advertised as 'Up To 24Mbit' and and ADSL2 checker suggesting '6Mbit' the resulting '3.87Mbit' is far from expectations. I do believe though that whilst the ISPs advertised claims of speed are grossly misleading, the wolf circling the flock is BT as it is they who determine the speed and not the ISP. As an afterthought, if your speed is determined by how close you live to the exchange, and the BT equipment has shrunk is size so much, maybe we should all go and live at the nearest exchange ;)

It also states: "If you are in an Orange broadband network area, our fastest speeds are up to 20 Meg. Outside these areas our speeds are up to 8 Meg." Am I in an Orange broadband area? lets look at the map.... except, no map. I'm assuming I am, as they have measured my speed at 14mb. We were with Tiscali with; line rental at £9.35 pm and 2Mb Unlimited Broadband and any time talk, which include free calls to uk numbers, at £17.01 pm thats £26.36 pm altogether for phone and broadband, now TalkTalk have taken over Tiscali, at first all seemed ok, but on Monday 13th September 2010 our internet was so slow you could not do anything, if you wanted to watch a video on youtube or on the iplayer the video would constantly stop and have to keep buffering, the only way around this is to download the video and then play it, it would take ages for any website to load and on some occasions we would get the server timed out or page unable to load, at first I thought I would let the problem resolve itself, so when it was still not working on Tuesday 14th September 2010 I rang TalkTalk, the advisor on the phone told me to go to www.speedtest.net, I did this and our download speed we 0.11Mb/s and upload was 0.05Mb/s the advisor could not find anything wrong with our line so escalated the case, I was told someone would ring back between 1 and 3 the next day, however no one did, in fact I was out when they rang and about 8:40pm but when I spoke to the advisor, on Friday, they told me that TalkTalk are moving all of Tiscali customer over to the TalkTalk network and this would take a couple of months, they did ask if I had noticed any improvement in the speed of the internet to which I said, "only slightly", they told me that they asked BT to upgrade the line for them which is why the speed had improved a little. They then said words to the effect that we would be experiencing slow speeds for a month or 2. I have been doing the speed test at verious times and here are the results: 14/09/10 @ 22:52 - Download 0.83Mb/s, Upload 0.37Mb/s 15/09/10 @ 12:10 - Download 0.61Mb/s, Upload 0.37Mb/s 16/09/10 @ 09:50 - Download 1.04Mb/s, Upload 0.37Mb/s 16/09/10 @ 11:35 - Download 1.03Mb/s, Upload 0.38Mb/s 16/09/10 @ 12:27 - Download 1.35Mb/s, Upload 0.38Mb/s 16/09/10 @ 14:47 - Download 1.47Mb/s, Upload 0.38Mb/s 16/09/10 @ 22:01 - Download 0.86Mb/s, Upload 0.38Mb/s 17/09/10 @ 11:45 - Download 1.37Mb/s, Upload 0.38Mb/s I also did a few of these speed tests on the iPhone and here are the results: 15/09/10 @ 19:19 - Download 0.02Mb/s, Upload 0.36Mb/s 15/09/10 @ 22:22 - Download 0.19Mb/s, Upload 0.36Mb/s 15/09/10 @ 23:46 - Download 0.27Mb/s, Upload 0.36Mb/s 16/09/10 @ 23:15 - Download 0.30Mb/s, Upload 0.36Mb/s 17/09/10 @ 19:44 - Download 0.49Mb/s, Upload 0.36Mb/s 18/09/10 @ 00:58 - Download 0.48Mb/s, Upload 0.36Mb/s 18/09/10 @ 09:14 - Download 0.56Mb/s, Upload 0.36Mb/s 19/09/10 @ 20:25 - Download 0.20Mb/s, Upload 0.36Mb/s Obviously we are not happy with having to wait a month or 2 for normal service to resume and we are seriously thinking of switching, especially if we could get on the same sort of package we had with Tiscali but slightly cheaper

I have had nothing but disappointment with Virgin, talk talk and now sky, all claiming speeds that they have never met. I feel that internet bills should reflect what speed you get and that the internet exchanges should be maintained much more. Look at South Korea and their 100Meg standard!!! Catch up Britain!! I'm now joining a site called SAMKNOWS and hopefully joining another battle to get ISP's to tell it like it is! Keep up the good work Gadg team!! Love the show and the fun you guys have!

We all know that when a company's says up to a certain speed, translation is you can get anything up to that speed. Just like in a clothes shop when a sale advertised items for £9.99 or above it does mean we should expect everything for £9.99 nor do we campaign about this wording. Don`t see the point in removing the phrase 'up to' since speed vary from house to house a supplier would never be able to advertise apart from to say 'we sell broadband'. Think we should really be campaigning to up internet speeds rather than just rewording ads after all they do what they say on the tin 'up to`. Just removing this phrase alone will not change the fact internet in the majority of the UK is slow.

I have tested at various times using various sites, and the best speed I've had is 1.45 Mbps download and 0.4 Mbps upload. My ISP (BT) advertises speeds of up to 20 Mbps, and when I access their network centre on the computer it always says 54 Mbps - surely this lying can't go on?! After a week of testing, I am switching ISP today - fingers crossed it makes a difference.

I have tested my connection speed using a variety of test sites over a 2-week period, totalling 16 tests on each site. The Gadget Show test consistently returned download values between 30% to 50% lower than the best results from other sites. Some of your voters may be being misled by this. I am also suspicious of your upload results which always returned exactly the same value, slightly higher than the other sites. Why is there not a button for "as expected" or "acceptable"? My connection is nominally 8Mbit/s and the best result I get is a shade under 6Mbit/s which is neither faster or slower than expected so I didn't feel able to vote. My ISP also publishes the details of the way they manage the network speeds for different user packages at different times of day.

I have been paying Sky for a download speed of 20mbps for over a year, I ran the gadget show test and discovered i was getting a max of 1.7mbps. I was so disgusted that I called and spoke to an engineer, by the time I got off the phone my download speed was up to 17.99mbps. It was all because someone had put in capped speed of 3mbps when I signed up, so it's worth telling people to check with their provider.

Have been well and truly annoyed by the speed of our internet for years but we thought that it was so slow because the hole village had slow internet. However at about Christmas time I asked a friend of mine that lives down the road form me what speed he gets, he said about 3mb. Now take a look at our speed, on average 0.4mb but can be as slow as 0.2mb. We contacted our ISP (orange) and they told us that there was not a lot that they can do as it was up to BT to improve wiring and they would not do it. I was not happy about this so we have been gathering information till recently. We have found trough line tests and other such that the reason that our internet speed is so slow is due to the wire that comes to the house form the junction box on the pole outside. We now that the rest of the street can get 4mb and some 6 or 7mb. Over the last week we have been trying to talk to someone ether at BT or Orange but we have just been fobbed off every time. We have tried to talk to a BT engineer, Orange engineer anyone but even if we find someone that tells us that yes the wire needs to be changed they then tell us that it is not them that can do it. In short BT don’t want to provide me with the service that I should be getting because they don’t want to do the job that is there’s to do. Can you help me? Thanks, Phil.

People complain about your there speed but remember there is a number of factors, distance from exchage, quality of the line, router you are using and internal wiring and many other. It says up to 8Meg it does say you will get 8meg to think everyone gets 8meg is just plain stupid. There are plenty websites that will give you an estimate of what you can get but bare in mind these are estimates based on distance and not line quality

How are they making my router say different as i've been complaining for years now and had engineers out etc.... then one day they said your getting 20mb and they just seemed to pick a number and that number is now set in my modem router and has no relevancy to the speeds im actually getting.

Just ran a test and I got speeds of 0.12 Mbps download and 0.34 Mbps upload so I think you will agree that my ISP AOL is total cr*p! If anyone is looking for an ISP please don't choose AOL. If you have a problem you will have to ring a call centre in India. You won't understand what these people are saying and they won't understand you but hey, that's AOL for you. You will be asked to jump through all kinds of hoops like changing filters and ringing back which is a favourite. When you ring back you get someone else when you eventually get through and you will have to start all over again. Then they will ask you to run three speed tests and ring back again. Then they will ask you to run more speedtests using the yellow cable instead of wireless and ring back. The result of all this is that you get a download speed of 99 Kbps and are told that your maximum speed is 250 Kbps when you are actually paying £14.99 a month for 'up to' 8 Mbps. Oh and by the way if you complain to AOL they will offer to reduce your monthly charge to, as in my case, £9.99 per month. Some have actually managed as low as £7.99 per month. For that they wanted me to sign up for another 18 months of AO hell. I told them to stick it.

For me you are campaigning against the wrong thing - Almost ALL ISP claim "Unlimited Downloads" yet some claim a 'fair use policy' or 'capping' at as low as 1gb. The word unlimited is not ambiguous. IT means WITHOUT LIMIT. How can these ISPs claim UNLIMITED then cap it? I don't so much mind the capping - JUST BE HONEST! It would be like McDonalds stating 'UNLIMITED REFILS' but then stating they have a fair use policy of 1 per customer! GET REAL! PLEASE add this to your campagin - I can't even see how claiming we have unlimited downloads and then capping or even charging more is even legal!

Our good old BT broadband has always run ok apart from once a year we have to call BT as the modem switches channels and you can't pin it down at all. A few months ago I was playing on my PS3 and I kept loosing connection in the game..... I did a speed and connection test ? Our connection was fine, however our speed had dropped from an average of 5.8 Mbps down to 0.938 Mbps :-( I reset everything possible and after several hours I gave up. We should be getting ' UP TO 10Mb' we normally get between 5 - 6.5 Mb which is ok for what were using it for. I rang BT and they did the old reset stuff from there end but only to some small effect, we now only at very best get 2.993 Mb :-( which is better but why different from before ???? The entire BT thing is getting me down so I tried some speed tests at my friends house who is on SKY broadband there getting 6.6 Mbps and there further away from the exchange than where my home is from our BT exchange ? The only thing I have noticed whilst keeping an eye on the speed tests as I often do a speed test from my iPad and for some reason my friends SKY broadband seem to only keep connection to anything apple for between 5 and 20 minutes ????? I hope that the issue with ISPs is sorted soon as in todays growing world a stable fast connection is not just important for buiness but in our personal lives aswell. I think that ISPs should charge monthly for what you get, for example if your broadband is £14.99/month for 10Mbps and you get 10Mbps then you pay £14.99 but if you can only get 5Mbps then you should only pay £7.50....... why is this not the case. Good luck Gadget show.... lets get some results.

I think alot of peoples woes also come from thier connection to the DSL hub. For example, the only way I can get my full 50mbps is to hard wire it to the router. All tests should be done this way as it eliminates the un-stableness of the wireless in your homes. On dual band wireless N (supposedly 300mps), I could only achieve 30mbps on the DSL. With a hard wired network, 50 all the way. This should be taken into consideration, and to be fair is why Virgin say they do not support thier claimed speeds over the wireless hub. Fair point I think. Either way, 50mbps is simply dirty, and I love it.

I have had an on-going difference of opinion for over four years with BT. When Broadband first came to this area, I was getting huge speeds of over 7 Megs but as popularity for connections grew, the facilities were never increased and the speed has gradually diminished to a low of 0.05mbps as the VP’s got more crowded... On their official test site, some advice about received speed is given and it says that as far as they are concerned acceptable limits are from 0.06Megs to 7.1 Megs, how can such a vast difference be acceptable? If I paid for 8 Gallons of diesel, I am not going to accept ½ a gallon am I? My Line profile has also changed and was at one point dropped to 4 from 7.5! If they insist on oversubscribing exchanges and refusing to update the equipment, they should be made to charge only for what we are receiving. This should be easily achievable, after all, they will soon moan at customers who go 'over the top' on their downloads threatening to charge premium rates for the ‘excess’ so they must monitor what we get, so it must be a simple transition to charge for what we get? Or even to start giving refunds for lack of service, I am sure this would soon change their attitude. A better solution would be to increase the available equipment to match the demand, they only reason I am receiving slow speeds is the lack of VP's at my local exchange, which by the way, was supposed to be upgraded to ADSL2+ last year, that has been deferred again to probably next year which is a bit like waiting for tomorrow! BT local engineers have always turned out and always done their utmost to fix my problem, the line between here and the exchange has been replaced and checked so many times I have lost count, my master socket is used for testing so much I am thinking of installing one specifically for line tests! I can’t fault efforts of the local lads, but they can do nothing about BT wholesales flat indifference and refusal to supply adequate connections at the exchange. I have been moaning at them for so long and anyone else that will listen that I am now being monitored 24/7 by Ofcom via Samknows which I hope will go toward a proper solution and stops BT from these abysmal practices. I know on average using www.speedtest.net that I average 19Mb/700Kb Download/Upload to servers in Manchester. Was expecting a lot lower, though depends where the Gadget Show speed test servers are in the country...still happy with 18-19MB out of my 20MBit connection with VirginMedia, in fact if downloading open source etc. from Torrent streams, I can manage to get up to 23Mb!!! I install broadband and I still to this day have not seen a 20MB BT Line based connection exceed 10MB. I do pity anyone that can't get a fibre optic Broadband service.

I get 2.22 & 0.44. I pay the same as my colleague who lives in town and gets 7.7. Now, it may be that the suppliers cannot technically improve this, but why when I pay for petrol by the gallon, beer by the pint (OK, also by the gallon!), and gas and electricity by their respective units am I so unfairly treated this way. In other words, "...don't charge for for what you cannot supply...". Simple. (Last word spoken in the voice of a meerkat).

My "up to 8M" connection shows 6M down and .5M up - as expected, if not a little faster, as I'm not that close to the exchange. However, the speed depends on the length of copper wire from the exchange, not the actual physical distance, and this can make a big difference! Your best guess at the expected speed would be from checking how fast neighbour's connections are - could ISP's collect this information? I agree you should pay for what you get, and a minimum speed should be given.

Your speed tester showed me as having 4.9MB and at most 8MB all the others I have tried always come back at 10MB+ at all times of the day. Get a reliable test from at least 2 sources before you have a go at the ISP. P.s. whats wrong with UP TO ? We were on the phone with our isp loads and it was only then when we got 1mb we started with 300kbps. Switched provider to BT because my old isp never spoke with them i had to act as a middle man. Now speed has gone down again and BT's call centre won't talk to BT Open Reach! We now have called so many times we have the direct number of the BT head of customer services, he said he would take care of it personally we then got a bill for our broadband on BT but our phone bill was still with our old isp! Looks like not even the head of customer services can get things done. Speed back at 1mb now but what a carry on.

My ISP is Pipex, now TalkTalk, and I pay for an unlimited 'up to 8mb' package. Although I was told I'd receive 3.5mb when I signed up, 1.5mb is the fastest I've ever received. Yet I know neibours who are connected to the same telegraph pole that receive 3mb plus. I've had all the usual excuses from TalkTalk about internal wiring, distance from exchange etc. In the last few months the speed has dropped to 480kbps down, 350kbps up, sometimes dropping to 125kbps and at one point plummeting to 40kbps! I've used TalkTalks own speedtester regularly for the last two years at all times of day and night and my speed is just as slow at 4am as it is at 4pm. I've had the mastersocket in my house changed as well as the cable leading into my house from the telegraph pole but it made no difference whatsoever. Numerous phone calls and emails to Pipex/TalkTalk has had no result at all. There's no cable option around here and even though I live only an hours drive to Liverpool or Manchester, I'm connected to an antiquated BT exchange (Aberconwy, Nth Wales) that doesn't have local loop unbundling so changing my ISP probably wouldn't make a difference. Talk about 'digital apartheid', it's more like living in Albania here, except everything costs 10 times more!!

Took the speedtest. Package through Sky Broadband - Upto 20Mbit Unlimited Download Speed - 16.63Mbit Upload Speed - 0.66Kbit Overall I have found that this is average for my particular line, although I live around 550 meters from my exchange as the crow flies it is a very long line underground. I tought it was worth noting that I did have to make countless of calls to Sky each and every night in order for them to get the speed to this level, this proves ISPs CAN do something about it, they just choose not to. Whether peak or off-peak the speeds above do not change which suggests that it is not being 'traffic shaped' or 'limited' in any way. Well worth getting on the phone every day until the speed issues are resolved, it can work unless there is really a problem with the telephone line.

I'm currently on Virgins so called XXL (50Mb) Broadband service and performance is highly irratic. Having used the Gadget Shows and other speed test sites over several weeks, the only time I can see anywhere near 50Mb is early in the morning (before 8am) when speed tests show between 45 and 48Mb but at most other times, speeds are significantly slower with 20-25Mb being the norm. In the evening, it regularly drops below 20Mb. That's less than half of the advertised speed. Complaining to Virgin is useless as they claim they can see the link at 50Mb which is exactly what you would expect as they test the link speed to the modem and not the actual throughput or download speed. I'm very disappointed with the service overall.

Brand new ISP for the first time for my elderly father to watch programmes on iPlayer etc. Father's house is within one mile of nearest exchange, not that it could be as simple as the crow flies. A few checks with ISPs were all around 15mbps capability of a possible 20mbps capability (in the adverts anyway), during initial investigations via my basic-ish laptop. Decided to go for it. Day one - Received hub, plugged in and everything was very easy to set up and connect. I did a few speed tests just to see the speed and all reported about 7mbps. Brilliant but then I thought not great but fair enough, fast enough to do the job I wanted it to do for my father. I set up a programme about saving the oceans via laptop and iPlayer and I think Dad enjoyed it. Anyway, another programme was selected. The screen changed a couple of times, then it changed to the programme page. Programme started to play then stopped. Circular timer in middle of screen for a minute or so and then started to play again but only for about five seconds. Then the Circular timer appeared again for a minute or so and then the programme started again. Then...... you get the drift. Tried to pause it and see if it needed buffering, no joy. Checked 'save' settings in the player settings and changed it to unlimited, no joy. I'm no expert but I hope I can figure my way out of some pc or tech problems, but this I just couldn't figure out. Day Two – Opened iPlayer and Task Manager, Networking tab and tried programme again, but it was the same problem. Tried your speed checker and it reported, wait for it ....... 0.13mbps download and 0.36mbps upload. Lol, then, oh I thought, but didn't have any more time for more checks. Day Three - Tried a few speed checkers and all reported same as you. Followed all instructions down to the letter; filters, removing extensions, resetting hub, etc. Tried another laptop etc. still no joy. Everything reports the same speed. Tried everything I can think, grrr. Day four – all still the same, well almost. There was an improvement to 0.49mbps. Called their customer support and after they did some checks, I was told: the speed was reduced by them deliberately and I was a lucky customer as equipment was being upgraded on the line at the exchange and after 10 days it would be giving me the full 15mbps, as stated in the advert, and that this was standard practice. I think this smells bad but prepared to wait to see what happens. I don’t understand why when we first connected we were getting about 7mbps and able to watch a streaming video then after an hour it was reduced to 0.13mbps. If equipment was to be upgraded why was this not done at the time of the installation/activation date? I did ask if Ofcom was aware of this ‘standard practice’ and was told they were aware of it. Mmm, I wonder. So, according to (**) ISP, on the 15th October 10, we should have full broadband at 15mbps or more. So we’ll wait and see if it does increase to the 15mbps as I was told and if not, then it’s not really fit for purpose or sold as advertised and may decide to terminate the contract, which would be a pity. (PS – I v.sorry for the ramble above!) (PPS - love the show, never miss.)

I have tested my connection speed and I am on an "upto" 8mb service and I have a 4mb speed. I think this is what is really expected with these "upto speeds" considering my distance from the exchange. More seriously for the show is that Talk talk and sky have both sent me letters telling me they can give me upto 20mb at my address. As for as I aware they have not upgraded the exchange to give me this so this is completely false advertising. My exchange is in Barrow-in-furness, please investigate this claim.

The best I can achieve is 0.94 Mbps Download & 0.37 Mbps Upload! We only have access to BT's copper wires here - no fibre cable. As speed seems to depend upon distance from the local telephone exchange, surely BT should be obliged to charge less the further the customer is from the exchange. Perhaps that would encourage them to speed up the installation offibre cable.

with virgin(vermin) media you would be lucky to get 10% of the broadband speed you pay exstortionate amounts of money for. virgin media have two speeds DEAD SLOW and STOP. If you phone to complain and they do'nt hang up on you and have an hour or two to talk to some person in India who has'nt a clue what your talking about.they will fob you off and say it's your computer that is'nt working properly.Just going to make a cup of coffee as Iam waiting for a page to load. PS I have a band new computer and it is working well on all my frends broadband connections. so come on branson get your big foot the brake and stop ripping people off.

On TalkTalk's own speedtest I got 3.086Mbps on download and .218 on upload. On your test I got 2.86 and .18 - not too far out - so why can we not watch "streamed" videos - trying to watch F1 recordings is impossible as the stream pauses more than it plays! (Incidently, the TalkTalk help line said that the recorded speeds were well within spec. Could it be a wireless problem? I don't think we have a password for it.

I have to admit the campaign is a good idea, but have any of you realised that there are still people in the country who cant even receive broadband yet? At the moment, to get any better than dial-up I have to put up with extending a mobile broadband dongle by converting to Ethernet then back to USB, and sticking this on a long pole out of the bathroom window! This doesn't really seem acceptable, I don't live that far from town, certainly not in the middle of no-where, but as I am in between the two, I'm on an exchange 4 miles away and so broadband simply doesn't work. I believe this would be an intersting topic of discussion for the show, and possibly even an opportunity for extension of the campaign.

I don't understand why ISP's can't just charge according to what they actually supply. With every other commodity; gas, electric, phone you pay for what you get. With broadband you pay for a notional service; say up to 20Gbps Broadband, but what you get is randomly dependant on a series of circumstances out of your control. I pay for 20Gbps broadband yet only get 1.7Gbps. Why shouldn't I just pay for a 1.7Gbps service? What's so difficult about that? BT know my line is rated for a maximum of 1.7Gbps so this is what my charging should be based on. If BT can improve my line then my line speed improves and I pay more. The present system gives BT (and ISP's) no incentive to improve line speeds. As they can charge for up to 100Gbps (or whatever) without practically delivering anything like that, they don't care how efficient the line actually is. If they could only charge for a maximum of what it really delivers then there would be an incentive to improve badly performing circuits.

I'm a bit shocked - its far from the first time I checked my broadband speed and most of the time it comes in at 3.4 Mbs (roughly) but testing it tonight at 8pm it came in at a mind-bogglingly awful 1.42!! Now, I admit that less than half the theoretical 8 Mbs is pretty bad anyway, but cutting even that in half for this test is just unbelievably bad. What on Earth is happening to broadband speeds - and why is it the very OPPOSITE of what we should be expecting? Could it be that because I happen to like iPlayer and use it to catch up on TV shows that my ISP - or worse yet BT - has decided to put the choke on my available speed because I use the internet for one of its primary modern functions?

Why no option for "as fast as I was expecting"? Just having "faster than" or "slower than" will not give a true picture, especially since - as you should know - web-based speed tests will always give a lower result than what your router actually syncs at due to the same variables (BT's old copper wire, poor home wiring, distance from exchange etc) which result in different connection speeds. Also, I haven't heard how you propose ISP should sell their services if not for the "up to" moniker.... "down to"? "average"?

Report as inappropriate
Dave Pashby

BT service in rural area. Getting 6Mb down / 0.4MB up. Pretty good I think. I remember when we couldnt even get ISDN lines out here. I too share doubts on how you can expect ISP's to sell if not using the "up to" speed. There are just too many other variables. And what about all the other things that are sold with "up to" in the marketting. Petrol that gives "up to" so many extra miles Tyres that will ave you "up tp" so many litres petrol Paint that will cover "up to" so many square meters

I've had a problem with BT Broadband for over 6 weeks now where I'm getting an average of 10,00 HEC errors per hour on download. I've had 3 engineer visits and the problem is with the Broadband Service provided and is not technical. BT support do not understand non-line techincal. Subject; Broardband Speed I have been a subscriber to TalkTalk from the very first moment that they introduced "Free Broardband" (what an innovation!). Overall I have been satisfied with their service but recent market improvments have suggested that I might now find a better deal. I have run your Broardband speed test and I am now confussed by the results. My current Windows XP/Internet Explorer 8 connection states that I am getting a 6.6mbps connection speed. If I run a speed scan through http://www.speedtest.net/ I get around 5.8mbps while your own test suggests 2.33mbps? Do you have any explanation for such a discreptancey?

I can't say I'm overly impressed with your speed checker - flash based causes several problems, and the other options pointed to aren't much better. I have the Virgin 50Mbps service, and the best any of the speed checkers shows is about 31MB - should I be disappointed? not in the least, as I know from downloading large linux ISO images that I get a consistent 5.2MB (bytes) per second download speed, which is close to the stated value, it's actually much better than it sounds as well, as ISP's give you the layer 2 bitrate, not the layer 4 rate that OSX, Windows or Linux show you, so you've go an overhead of at least 64 bytes per packet - which even on a 1500 byte packet, is still a 4.3% overhead, which is over 2Mbps on a 50Mbps link. One of the things is contention ratios, which ISP's are very keen to keep private - if you've got 200 customers going into a single DLSAM / aggregation router each being offered 8Mbps, and the DSLAM only has a 1Gbps link, if all of you are trying to access at the same time, you've got a problem - 1600Mbps, doesn't go down a 1G link very well, so you all suffer - Virgin are not immune to this any more than ADLS providers. People with ADSL are doubly in trouble, as distance from the exchange is critical - I've noticed people blaming BT's copper sure they own it, but physics can't be changed, however technology can be changed. Until recently, all BT DSL was based on ADSL2+, which is quite an old technology, if other ISP's are so worried, they can use newer DSL technologies that give better speed over the same copper, with less degredation over distance. These other ISP's don't seem interested. Basically, my comments boil down to this, when an ISP advertises, they should claim a speed that most people (Standard deviation bell curves can give info based on distance from the exchanges) can achieve both at off peak and peak times - it's no good if I can get the maximum data rate at 3AM and dial up rates at 7pm

Report as inappropriate
Ralph

My result on testing was about what I expected living about 2.5miles from the exchange. It is about time we started paying for the speed we receive and not the max. given. Why should we subsidise the users living nearer the exchange getting nearer the stated 20mbs

Congratulations on their beating their previous record of 0.07Mbps download speed on my laptop. Will they go for an even slower speed and try to break this latest record... My ISP has washed their hands of all blame and the ASA say they don't deal with matters such as this. I think your speed test is very misleading. I am currently participating in a 200Mb/s broadband trial in Coventry and as such I am testing my speeds many times a day on many different sites including the ISPs own. I know what my speed is and I know what to expect from the many speed test sites and real world use. Your speed test would have me believe my d/l speed is only 11.6Mb/s. I've tried your test at all times of the day and now finally at 1am and get nothing better than this. I don't expect to get a true reading from your test but come on. Only 11.6Mb/s from a 200Mb/s connection? I can test my speed just before and just after using your test and I get what I would expect. Why is your test so wrong?

Absolute rubbish ! 9 times out of 10, when I try to test the speed, the test fails, either because Talk Talk intervene and block the site, or the connection times out due to the speed being so slow. The average result, when it works, is sub 1MB. Which ever way you look at it the quality of this service is digusting ! I find myself resorting to a vodafone USB Dongle all too often at a cost of £10 per MB, but at least it's consistently 3 MB. Talk Talk may be cheap as chips, but you might as well plug your modem into a bag of chips for all the use it is.

I'm getting nearly 1 Meg download capability from Orange. This is twice what I was expecting and I live in an area with a low capacity phone exchange. Whilst I accept that the ISPs are quoting high 'up to' figures, to be fair to them, they can probably deliver such performance, where the exchanges have the capacity. You can't expect them to list every post-code, with a diclaimer, or estimate of service attached to it. But boy ..... do I wish my service was faster - it's all about upgrading the local exchange though - which is about 3 miles away.

once again i have found bt to be slower than expected, they have in my own experience a way of making the most out of customers, for starters they start you off slower than you would expect in the hope you don't notice and then if you do call them suddenly it was an error and they increase it, this has happened for me three times at dfferent addresses over the past several years. They also use another trick, if you say have a holiday or don't use your broadband as much for a week or two, they then drop your speed by at least 20%, this i know also happens, the unlimited isn't unlimited and they are always changing your connection speed, add to this the change at weekends and evenings and you have perhaps 20-30% of the week (provided you havn't been away) where you will get closer to the advertised speed, the rest of the time is pot luck but well down onwat you would expect!!

Your speedtest is completely skewed. I'm not inclined to let ISPs off the hook but I'm back with Virgin after a couple of years with Be (Fantastic isp) but have been checking lately because of peak time slowdown, I have a 50meg connection and even off peak when ALL other speedtests (including FTP and Usenet) are giving me close to my max yours rarely logs more than between 10 and 12. This is not the way to win the argument with ISPs. Virgin constantly redefine the word "unlimited" and are currently throttling the ports used by Usenet and P2P, they are always fighting a rearguard action against their lack of bandwidth and looking for scapegoats, please don't give them ammunition. People in the UK are best using the speedtest site and then reporting the results here.

I had BT increase the gain on my line several years ago and it seemed to help, also the noise is very low on the line. Never had any problems with my service as long as i've been with Tiscali. (now TalkTalk) tried a few ISP's over the years and none have been anywhere near as good.

We were with Tiscali and had no problems were geting constant 6-7 mbs download and 400 kbps upload . Talk Talk took over, put the price up within weeks, insisted on 18 month contract. Now the speed has dropped so badly as to make it unusable, some evenings drops to 70 kbps download speed . Contacted their help desk many times, they never ring back when they say they will. Have joined Tiscali user forum, where there are many many simialar complaints and help desk seem to put all problems down to our home setups. Strangely our problems and many of the complaints on forum started when Talk Talk changed Tiscali users over to new email system and servers. I have now had this speed problem for 6 weeks and so many promises that it will be fixed that I have now lost faith. I think Talk Talk have an under capacity problem on their network and that is why the speed has dropped.I am amazed that a company this big is incapable of offering a good service either in function or customer support. It's a sham and if you click their "cancellations" link on their website the first lines inform you about the fact that you have an 18 month contract and go on to emphasise the penalties for cancellation. That can't be fair as they are not offering the service you signed up for when you can't use the service in the evening! I think Ofcom should take action to stop this entrapment clause in ISP contracts. .

Do I have the slowest broadband in the uk?. On the far end of a long line, on a spur from a far local exchange. When it`s busy I can hardly even get broadband at all, on BT`s own modems it would drop out all the time. Supplier is BT. Speed results= download 0.13 mbps, upload 0.36 mbps. So much for BT`s super quick broadband!!. Considered training some snails to carry messages up & down the phone line, but either the notes fall of the snails, or the snails fall off the wire.

Have just had BT Infinity installed and prior to this was only getting 2.56mb download and less than 1mb upload. Have tested 4 times now and download has been between 35mb and 25mb depending on time of day. Upload is consistently 7mb. When BT first contacted me they did a quick test on the line and said they'd get me around 16mb so I'm happy with the way it's gone.

Just checked my appalling internet connection which perports to be up to 20Mb, 520kb download and 690kb upload. This is a joke. My ISP say there is nothing they can do as I'm getting the best the line will offer, BT are just as useless and are not interested in doing anything about it. The problem clearly lies with the poor quality of the cabling and is always worse during periods of wet weather. It's not as if I'm out in the sticks I'm in the centre of the Medway towns for goodness sake. I heard today the Kent is the worse area of the country not sure whether that's true but in my case it sure is. Why don't ISP's who pay BT for the service (or lack of) put more pressure on them to improve things? It's all very well saying they're rolling out fibre optic but that'll take forever to get here I know. They should at least sort out the poor service they are giving first. Hello. This speed tester is not accurate at all. I have Virgin's 20meg service. Your speed test tells me i'm getting less than 10, however I am actually getting the full 20. When I download large files from the web, I get 20. When I use my xbox to download games I get full 20. When I use BroadbandMax tester it tells me just under 20 (the only tester I have found to be accurate so far) I have tried the gadget show tester at all different times of the day. I think its unfair to the ISP's that do deliver true speed as I believe it is the testers that are wrong, and yours is one of them. thanks Paul

Over the past couple of weeks I have done a number of speedchecks the results of which have highlighted the fact that I am certainly NOT getting remotely what I pay for. As with all ISP's they use the "up to" clause, which I fully appreciate but when you pay for 10 Mgb's you would think that occasionally it might reach at least 6 Mgb's ....not even close, the highest I have obtained is 1.52Mgb's (tests conducted at varying times - e.g. 8am, 12 noon, 6pm, 8.30pm, 12 midnight, 3am, etc, etc) ...according to those in the know, engineers, etc, there is nothing wrong with my computer or modem ...so go figure? ....I won't even go into the oh yes we "throttle" your area argument ...."throttle!!!!", bloody well choke I'd say!

Three issues: 1 - Your survey needs an 'about what I expected' answer. I tested my BB and if performed as I expected. I cant say its faster or slower, it wasn't. It was as expected. 2 - 'Up To' is used I'd have said, as its largely due to the wire ADSL technology and line length. If you live near the exchange you will get nearer to the 'Up To' figure. If you live a long way away, it'll be lower and get worse the further you are. There is only one thing the ISPs can do, replace wire based ADSL with optical cable - expensive, would people pay?. Or I suppose they can try to talk all its customers into moving nearer to the exchange - hardly practical. For them to estimate the actual speed you will get is not easy, hence the 'up to' figure. How can they check a line to say you will get xMB/s if the line is currently with a different service provider (for example). To estimate by post code is not accurate either as the lines can take different physical routes and in some cases be made of different materials (copper or aluminum for example) or be of very different (installation) ages. All these changes can effect what you will receive. 3 - Your survey needs to capture the connection/sync speed. This is the best speed a line can provide. If your throughput (as measured by you) approaches the sync speed then the ISP has done as good as it can with the available technology. If the throughput is a lot less than the connection speed then the ISP is not performing well and is probably congested. Example. If I live 1.8km from the exchange and get a sync speed of 3.6M on an 'up to' 8M service, then: If I get 3.2M throughput on a 3.6M Sync speed, thats quite good. If I get 1.2M on a 3.6M sync speed, thats quite poor. Even if both systems are 'up to 8M' (or even up to 20M), If my line is not faulty and the low sync speed is due to line distance, what can the ISP do? BT is rolling out FTTC, Virgin have some areas optically cabled, but if I live in a area that has neither and only has wired ADSL, what can the ISPs do? What are you actually asking the ISPs to do instead of advertising 'Up To'?. Even BTs FTTC is or should be labeled 'Up To' as the last bit of the connection is by wire and the length and quality will vary.

Here's an idea that may keep you happy. Change the marketing title to 'at least' as opposed to 'up to', but don't actually alter anything else. So instead of getting 3.8M on an 'up to 8M' service and being disappointed, we would get 3.8M on an 'at least 2M' service, and apparently you'd be happy!

I've just been reading J Biggins comments & thought If that being the case, then why don't the exchanges (who should know what the telephone lines are composed of etc.) tell the companies like Sky, TalkTalk & the like & then let them figure it out better. Or maybe the companies should ask the exchange what the lines are like, then they could get a more accurate reading.

I think there is alot of misunderstanding with broadband speeds, when a company says "up to" they really do mean "up to" and after looking in the small print it does say line length and other factors do affect possible speeds. I was with talktalk and I was on 8mb which yes they say "up to" 24mb but I wasnt paying for broadband and they did say when I signed up that my line length will affect my broadband speed. so 8mb for free really isnt that bad unlike when I changed to sky BIG mistake as I now get 6mb and am paying for the broadband which I only went to the because they cold called me and told me that I would get at least 10mb - that is false advertisement. I am definately looking forward to going back to talktalk.

Hi Jon, I am with Virgin Media Broadband and I am supposed to get up to 50mb broadband, this may be true of getting this speed at 3am in the morning but during the day it can be anything from 3mb to 45mb and sometimes after 5pm it can drop to 2mb. I have been in contact with Virgin Media many times and been constantly told that ' it is a known area fault', although I was told by a Virgin Media engineer that the speed problem was due to 'Virgin Media' not wanting to pay out for essential boosters for certain areas in Leeds. Also another reason given by said engineer was that living in a high student area in Leeds, that he had seen student share housing with anything of up to 3-4 routers attached together splitting out their broadband connection and thus using up bandwidth for the area. How true most of this is is unclear, but i have notice that 'Virgin Media' are now rolling out 100mb broadband, unfortunatley if they carn't even supply a constant near 50mb then this will not be valued as a future upgrade with Virgin. Sort it out Virgin Media!

i have done a speed test and as a virgin media customer the broadband speed are phenomenal you def get wot you pay for i have upto 30mb and 5mb uplaod i tested all day and it was consistant at 29.87mb average and 3.6mb uplaod average...... the only thing i dont like is but i suppose is fair is if you download a lot say over 5gb they throttle your speed by 75% for 5hrs as not to slow your neighbours down they say wether its true i dont know anyway VIRGIN rule

I tried this speed test and found it to be quite confusing, For example, it's telling me that my max download speed is 12Mbits, however when I download an actual file, in my example a 3.6Mbyte mp3 track, it works out at 22Mbits as the actual rate of download. I have repeated this test several times and get similar answers, what's going on? Why does this test slow such a difference when compared to reL file download?

0.12Mbps!!!! serving provider says nothing we can do. Even though told me 'buy our new router to it jump up those speeds' Its not like i live way out beyond. I live in a town with an estimated population of 9000 not a small place. I think some areas in the UK area getting shafted. To me in 2011 this is shocking.

2.5 download and 0.5 upload. POOR!! Why don't the ISPs operate in a way that you can pay for what you get based on your average for the month? For example if over the month my average was 24mbps download speed (which is my 'up to' on TalkTalk) then i pay 24 x 1mbps price (for arguments sake say 50p per 1mb) = 12 quid. This would mean i would pay 1.25 for the actual speed i receive just now. That is what i would call a fair trade. Is there any other product that is sold in this 'up to' way? Is there a grocer somewhere selling "up to" 5lbs of bananas for 1.50 only for the customer to end up with 1 solitary banana and being unable to fulfill a childs wish of everyone at their birthday party having a lovely banana split? I hope not. :)
