Mobile World Congress – the big news so far
This week is Mobile World Congress over in Barcelona. Now, you might not have heard of it, but it’s the biggest mobile phone conference in the planet, and is host to ALL the movers and shakers in the mobile market.
It’s where every company announces their handsets for the year ahead, as well as unveiling glimpses of great new future tech and applications. So what has happened on this, the first day of MWC proper? Here’s a list of the highlights so far:
Windows Mobile 7 A brand-new version of Windows Mobile has launched, and it actually looks quite fun. There’s integration with Xbox LIVE as well as live web-update tiles on the homescreens. Expect high-end Windows Mobile 7 handsets hitting the shelves this year.
Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini The follow-up to the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has taken all the great Android features of the original and packed them into a new gorgeously compact body. There’s a new hot corners function, that let’s you access your favourite areas with a single-handed thumb prod.
Puma phone This bizarre sports tie-in with Sagem is the dark horse of the show. It’s yet to be officially anounced, but i’s thought to have a solar-charging panel and packed with loads of sport training software as well as video calling.
Samsung i8520 Beam The Samsung Beam is another cool gimmick – an Android-packing projector phone that lets you project your clips you’ve recorded on your HD Ready camcorder. There’s also an 8MP camera, so this could be the Android phone that finally convinces shutterbugs.
Motorola Quench Te big news is the new Swype touchscreen finger writing. That means you don’t need to stab separate letters, just swish your fingers over the keys to spell out words. Much quicker and very cool.
The world’s cheapest mobile Vodafone launched the Vodafone 150, and own-brand, no-frills mobile that costs $15. It’s aimed at emerging markets, but considering the price, it’s an ingenious little device that does exactly what it should – make calls and send texts.

I am a huge fan of HTC and am the very proud owner of the HD2 which is "quietly brilliant!" I am so glad that it got 4 G's on Monday. Windows hides so well in the back ground which makes excellent use of the HTC Sense. HTC are also very good at putting updates and patches out on their website to help with bugs and gremlins - they did this for the camera on the HD2 and I was very surprised about the before and after pics taken!! It really does improve the camera!! Well in my opinion anyway!!

watching jons review on 'e readers' recently made me think about how difficult it is to view a colour screen mobile phone in daylight, how great would it be if mobile phones could be viewed in sunlight like e readers can.. a manufacturer should make a touch screen mobile phone ,the size of a lg pop or nokia 5530 for instance with a high resolution black and white screen that can be seen in sunlight ..this would be an ideal phone for just making phone calls and especially for texting ..and to be honest not everyone needs a camera on their mobile and think of the benefits of users in very sunny country's like africa etc
