iMovie for iPhone: iPhone 4 only
iMovie won't play nice on old iPhones
If you’re not planning to upgrade your year-old iPhone 3GS but still like the look of the ace iMovie for iPhone, it seems you’re out of luck. Word coming out of Apple HQ is that the new editing app, shown off last week during the iPhone 4’s unveiling, is that it will not work with older models.
It’s undoubtedly bad news for those who already enjoy the iPhone 3GS’s ace, but limited, editing functionality. YouTube uploads surged after the arrival of the feature last year and they doubtless will again when the iPhone 4 lands next week.
But the question is, why won’t it work? Well, it seems it comes down to the power of the processor. The new A4 chip in the iPhone 4 can handle such tasks. The older, slower version in the iPhone 3GS simply can’t.
There’s other disappointing news too. You won’t be able to export projects from iMovie for iPhone onto the regular desktop version found on Macs. That’s a real shame for video buffs looking to tweak their handiwork in a more powerful forum.
Will this affect your decision to upgrade? Or will you be saving your cash and sticking with the iPhone 3GS? Let us know.
