Have your say – Microsoft Kinect or PlayStation Move?

Tuesday 10 August

On this week’s show we join Jason in LA for E3 – one of the biggest gaming expos on the planet. There’s no doubt that the big news for 2010 and beyond is motion-sensing gaming. And it looks as if Microsoft and Sony are taking up where Wii left off, having developed next-gen motion-sensing systems for their consoles.

Jason managed to get hands-on with each, and both look pretty impressive – but where’s your money going? Are you going to opt for Microsoft’s Kinect or the wand-based PS Move? Which do you think will come out top with titles? Take our poll below and let us know…

Everyone with an interest in games knows the winners of E3 this year were Nintendo with the 3DS being infinitely more interesting that Kinect or Move and more intriguing than PS3s 3D enabled games as it has the potential to bring 3D to the masses with its price, form factor, ability to display 3D movies all bonuses next to the fact it’s 3D without glasses, a major stumbling block for 3D for some people (not that I get understand the aversion to the glasses) why Jason never featured it in his report was baffling

At first I thought Kinect looked amazing, but as I see more of it the more I think it may come up short. Seen a couple to many glitches on E3 vids and I think that price is way to much. Move on the other hand has impressed me no end. I just hope sony give it the support it needs. As for 3D... saw a Sony tv the the other day, very nice and a bit of a trip, but I don't think 3d is quite there yet. I'll be glad to be proved wrong as it's really impressive but I just wish there was a way to bin the glasses, then I'll be buying.

There are two markets open to Kinect and Move, the casual and the hardcore gamers. I can't see casual buyers been able to see the difference between how you play Move and Wii. Yes the graphics and accuracy of Move is vastly superior, I'm just not sure that will matter to a lot of people out there. These same people could see Kinect as totally different and new but find it too expensive. Hardcore gamers could take to Move earlier than Kinect because it will have a good range of games with depth from the offset while Kinect doesn't due to a longer development time.

Move is great for people who have a PS3 already, but its never going to change the minds of Wii owers, who already as loads of great games, plus a few great ones on their way. I was very excited about the kinect at last years E3, but thats slowly gone downhill for me. After seeing so many bad demos on Youtube and the high price (which you can pick a Wii up for the same) im just going stand on the side line come launch, and see what happens. Hope MS sorts the lang and more games do use the Kinect right.

kinect what a waste of time i think sony made the right move

PS3 hands down. Sony already had eye-toy which, obviously, wasn't a great success, hence no further development. I know Microsoft's is probably better and fine tuned, but who wants to look like an idiot waving around with nothing! At least with Move you look like you're playing a console as you have a controller! Microsoft's will only be a novelty like Eye-Toy was, not hardcore gaming.

kinect gets my vote as it looks like the first step towards virtual reallity gaming!! i do think move will be a huge hit as well. but with the ps3 3d gaming people people are going to consider , i got a perfect tv im not gunna go buy a 3d one when my tv is perfectly fine! but i can see kinect having some glitch problems.

The Kinect is a copy of the Playstation Eye

Johnmcc in a couple of words "eye toy" that`s all the kentic is just built upon with new tech. Search about and look at the other video`s for the MS and Sony movement projects and you will see that they both have something to offer, but the PS3 will most likely be the winner on this one. Ive got all the console`s and will most props get them for my kids to play about with during the winter months, because the Kentic has a more family/child line up for games for release were as the Move has a more adult lineup. By the way ive had 4 xbox360`s and everyone has had the ROD at least twice and so far ps3 aint had a problem.

Haha Microsoft Kinnect all the way!! Play Station move wasn't even ment to be sony's biggest realese 3D was hence Move being crap, its's just a wii controller without the buttons. But dont get the wrong idea Sony has beeten microsoft purely on the consept of 3D.

Either Kinect or 3DS. PS3 'wand' is just a slightly better Wii remote. Nothing as inventive as the 3DS and Kinect

spectrum or vic 20, bbc b or c64, master system or nes, mega drive or snes, psx or n64, ps2 or xbox, ps3 or 360, kinect or move. enough already. both have good points and bad points. kinect was seen working (very briefly) in a set up environment at e3. whether it'll work as promised at home waits to be seen. move was seen working (again very briefly) with 2 controllers for one game. thats £70 plus the price of a game. and that doesn't include the ps3 sub controller at £25 or the camera at £20-25. The games would have to be bloody good. until both have been out for about a year and everybody has a better idea of whether they can deliver the goods - I think I'll stick with the wii for now.

I think PS3 is moving in a direction that has already been explored, I appreciate it will be better than the Wii sensitivity wise, and the games will be more hardcore gamer than family time fun, however i am really excitied about kinect. its the next step as far as im concerned and im excitied to be a part of it. Ron-A-Tron, Jason wasn't aloud to film the Nintendo 3DS at E3. they wound'nt allow it???????

RE:mugglebornmico Did not know that, it's a bit strange, i can only assume it's due to the fact that there's now way of broadcasting footage of the 3DS running in 3D. Although a mention of it would have been good i can understand why Jason left it out. Nintendo will struggle to promote the concept enough condiering traditional adverts cannot dispaly the 3D capabilities, not allowing a tech specialist show film it seems mighty strange Appologies to Jason, i should never doubt his royal geekiness.

Kinect is just a motorised eye-toy and like eye-toy just a fad.

My guess, most people will vote the PS3 move. Popularity for the PS3 will make this 'new' technology or software [whichever it is, and whether it's new or not] soar for hardcore gamers. And there are LOADS out there. I'm not that hardcore, and to be honest, I stay away from PS3's they seem too complicated. But I'd vote Kinect, Just 'cause it has no controllers. So what it's a copy of the Eyetoy. I had an Eyetoy Camera, and still do. I love it. It was great for me when I had the game to play it with. My friends still look around for the game just so we can play it again. But whatever floats your boats. :] I just think the PS3 have copied Nintendo's Motion Plus and I don't like it. >:l And anyway, Nintendo have so much more to offer with the New 3DS, New games and more yet to come. :]

Ron-a-tron why are you mentioning the nintendo 3ds? Its not even a console, its a hand held devise. While the technology behind it is really good you can't really compare a hand held to a console. Anyway Sony wouldn't be able to do the same thing because the 3ds has a special screen designed for the purpose but PS3 relies on the TV being 3d. So to end this statement the 3ds is good but irrelevant and PS3 FTW! p.s I waned to put this out there because until now I though 3ds was an actual console

When Watching the gadget show E3 coverage we saw he Playstation Move and the Xbox Kinect. The Playtstation move is a good pieie of technology but I feel that it is just like playing the Wii but with a lot more precision. The Kinect will be a massively popular piece of technology when it is released as you will feel more into the game controlling wise. however when Gears of War 3 is released I would like to be able to use the controller and not have to use Kinect in all the game. I would find the game very difficult to play.

KINECT is the better of the two !!!!!!!!!! it doesn't involve controllers which means alot more freedom the price may be a stretch but to get an xbox is cheaper then buying a ps3 and then move

I don't like Sony's 3D idea, because I am not going to spend about £2000 on a 3D TV-and I'm not sure many other people would. Move is a good idea, but i do prefer Kinect (mostly because I like the Xbox 360 more than the PS3). It really depends on what type of game you enjoy. Kinect is better than Move for any boxing or fighting games. I also like the idea of Star Wars Kinect and using the force with your hands. I also like the scanner on Kinect that will read codes and download the item on your console, take Kinectimals for an example-where you buy new animals in shops. However I will get Move simply because it is included in LittleBigPlanet 2. I simply an't pick the best out of the 2.

kinect is 129.99 and move is 50 .00 . with kinect if u r playing a shooter (most popular type of game ) how are you going to reload a gun or switch weapons ? you are going to look like an idiot while u r playing coz when some one looks at you they will think wth is he trying to do while with the move they can see the controllers ps3 had move patented before the nintendo did .

I own both an 360 and a PS3, and from what I have seen and tried they both have good points and bad Kinect is revolutionary it has the major problem of being on the X-Box Which apart from some X-Box exclusive games I do not play that much due to the simple fact you have to pay money to get gold membership to play online which is disgraceful in my mind (we have been paying out for games and the console etc). Whereas the Playstation Move may be a more precise technological advancement of the Wii controls, it does have better graphics than the other consoles (and online play is free!). But a point that has yet to be said is that the Wii is gimicky and however you dress the new innovations up they may have that same problem. All that being said I think I will go with the Move (when the price has gone down and there are a few more games out for it). P.S to all those going on about the 3D update for PS3 it's optional just because the software is on there does not mean you have to get a 3D T.V, just like that although the PS3 was HD you did not have to have a HD T.V to play games.

i have a great idea for kinect and how it could change the way we view media and we could use the tech we have today. the idea is to connect a kinect unit to a projector and then use three or four of them to fill a room. meaning there would be a kinect unit and projector in each corner of the room. each one working semi-independently, they would be in contact with each of the other units and be able to continually scan the room to produce the best results for the projected imagery. this would mean that the projectors could render the entire room putting the user in a full 360 environment to enjoy the media. also using the kinects ability to recognize people and their outline this could be translated to the projectors allowing anyone in the room not to be projected upon, removing them from each of the projected image. imagine being in your own room at home turning on your xbox and your entire room changes around you, but when you look at someone else in the room or down at yourself, you remain the same. you would be able to interact with visual media in an entirely new way. it would change gaming the film industry and remove the television from the living room. that is the idea and using the technology we have it is possible.

In response to Tazz, no. That is'nt true. Yes you can set it to '3D' setting, but it will not be 3D until each image (because they are split, as you know,) has been correctly polarised. At the moment, PS3 is the only console on the market to do this properly. And now to answer the question. I like the concept of both Kinect and Move. However, I would prefer Move, seeings as it is something you can hold. Kinect is pretty much an Eye Toy update. I would have expected more from Microsoft. Also having a camera limits the amount of games that can use it. For example, you try playing Halo without being able to press buttons. Further more, another reason for Move being better is that it wasn't a giant leap. What mean be that is, it is very playable. Kinect is also playable but as Jason knows its not perfect (his dancing was really good, Kinect failed on that field.). Thanks for reading, it was a ling rant though. My apologies. Shaun

maddddddddddddd

wow there are a lot of either ill informed gamers or new kids out there, the kinect is not revolutionary at all, it uses a 3dv camera which was tested on the PS2 way before MS bought the company (note BOUGHT the company, not invented the tech themselves) the Move (or Arc as it was known when it first started out as a ball on a stick) started development way before the Wii came out, and let's not forget the Eye Toy came out before all of these technologies (the real revolutionary tech in gaming) but it showed that no controller isn't a great way to play games, as it limits the complexity of the games that can be made for it. which is why Move wins, not only is it more accurate and truly 1:1, but is also capable of being implemented into any style of game be it shooter, waggle or rts, it can do it, and do it bloody well.
