Have your say – Kindle vs iPad
The news that the Amazon Kindle has finally launched as a full UK release will be welcome news for many eBook fans – now UK customers don’t have to shell out for a US version and adapter and browse a US bookstore.
As well as tweaked specs, the new UK Kindle also has a pretty decent price tag – the Wi-Fi only version will set you back £109 while the 3G option will be £149.
But is it worth it for a dedicated eBook reader alone? The Apple iPad (and similar tablets) has made much of the fact that it can be used as an eBook reader – as well as its host of other capabilities. There’s even a Kindle app for it, so you can get all the same titles as you would on the dedicated Amazon device.
But what do you think? Is the iPad’s hefty price tag, lack of eInk and reflective screen enough to put you off using it as an eBook reader? Or is it the perfect piece of convergence that makes stand-alone devices hang their heads in shame?
Let us know which side of the gadget fence you sit on below…

This is equivalent to one of those wars where one country doesn't even acknowledge there is a war. Nobody expects people to buy both. Apple expects you to just buy an iPad. Amazon wants you to buy a Kindle if you want an e-reader. If they wanted more than that they wouldn't have launched Kindel apps for every other system. The Kindle is begining to find its market. Mostly non tech savy people who just want to read books. Expect the Kindle to be a popular Christmas present this year.

The kindle will suit some people who just want to read books as it is cheaper than the iPad and for black and white text is better. However, there will also be lots of people who want one device that can handle reading books, but can also do email, web, games, productivity etc etc, as well as looking great for colour reading (eg magazines and comics). Personally, if all I want is something just for reading I still prefer an actual book.

I think it was stuff magazine that referred to the Ipad as the best gadget you don't need. I think this description is perfect. Would love to get my hands on one but the price puts me off. I have a small note book that I can do most things the Ipad can do on, only cost me £200. The problem with both the note book and the Ipad is that are no good for reading books on, backlit screens will strain your eyes. Lost count of the amount of times I have printed a document off at work as it is much easier to read in print. This to me is where the Kindle shines. It is questionable though how many people really need one when paperback books are quite cheap. I reckon you could buy about 40 paperbacks from the supermarket for the price of this device. Like the Ipad then, the Kindle could be a contender for best gadget you don't actually need. Now I have had my say I am off to pre-order the new Kindle, don't really need one but then I am not sure that matters. Most gadget purchases we can do with out, sometimes we just don't to.

I think when the Notion Ink Adam arrives with its Non-Pixel QI Display, both the Kindle and the iPad will have some serious competition.

The IPad can impress with fancy graphics and animation but when I read a book I want to sit back, relax and enjoy the story. I like to read a book anywhere which isn't always near a mains socket. I find the 30 day battery life of the Kindle appealing. For long reading sessions I don't want bright displays and reflective screens. I want the strain from suspense in the story not eye strain. I think for reading eBooks the Kindle is my choice of device.
