Gadget Wall of Fame – Mac vs PC
This must surely be the ultimate head-to-head for the Gadget Wall of Fame. It’s the basis for 99% of geek arguments, it’s the one that causes tempers to fray, emotions to run high and friendships to end.
Are you a Mac or are you a PC?
Now, the PC epitomises the computer age for most of the world. Governments, hospitals, schools and businesses mostly all run using PCs. In fact 96% of the market are on non Macs.
Bit are beige boxes iconic enough? Those who have Macs are evangelical about their beautiful user interface, their stability and the way they’ve transformed how people see computing into something funky and fun.
You can find out which I opted for in tonight’s show, but what do you think? Should PCs wear the computing crown or are Macs where it’s at? Take the poll to let us know…

There is no question John got this one wrong, Mac has to be the best out there. Lets face it, Mac started the revolution of computing, moving away from the dull command driven interface to the wonder that is the GUI. They were the creators of the WYSIWYG and started all things good about computing. Those who have Macs are respected, those with PCs are embarrassed. Plus, they don't break down!!! Nick

Even though I am a heavy PC user I cannot believe Jon picked the "PC" to go on the wall of fame, why not the "spectrum" or the "com 64".......Bummer.....?

Mac, Mac, Mac, Mac, Mac!! Mr Bentley you are a buffoon!

Mac should have won by a mile. They constantly broke new ground and contributed to the evolution of computers. Photoshop was designed for the mac which in turn played a major part in transforming hollywood special effects. The OS operating system pre-dated windows by a couple of years (which is basically copy with flaws). itunes / ipod. and so forth ........

Mac V PC. No Contest. PC running Linux of course. Pity it didn't get a mention. It won't slow down, won't get a virus. Anyone in the world can walk up to one and use it as easy as they can use a Windows PC. It is secure unlike Windows. It has no spy ware unlike Windows and it won't dictate what hardware you use. You can turn it off without shutting it down and it won't throw a fit when you turn it back on. You can copy your operating system and give it to as many people as you as you like. Try Mandriva Linux or Ubuntu. I did after Vista shut down after I connected a USB printer and it told me I was using unauthorized hardware. Never looked back. The best PC I ever had.

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong - Mr Bentley, you are completely full of wrongosity. You could not be more wrong if you went to the University of Wrongness and got a First class degree in being wrong. I suppose you would choose McDonalds as the best restaurant because of it's massive sales? Surely innovation, quality, design, ease of use, etc etc etc etc are far more valuable than box shifting ... Your bad.

I am a Mac through and through, however I used to believe I needed a PC too, but I've got over that. Most jobs these days can be done with online software, will it soon be the end of Desktop OS's?

It is a great shame that the presentation contained poor facts: IBM NEVER invented the pc. I bought a personal computer for work which was light years ahead of the IBM offering and two years before that heap of junk came on the market. The one I bought, the ACT Sirius (even the name was cooler), contained dot addressable graphics, an ergonomic keyboard, fully tilting screen, cool design (for the later 1970's) and better storage capacity on floppy all as standard, none of which was available on the IBM machine, which was incidentally outsourced to a well known PC manufacturer and re badged by IBM. No innovation at all - unless you count shortening the term 'personal computer' then well in vogue to PC - what genius! In contrast the Apple and later the Mac have consistently led the way in innovation and cool design in so many ways. A very poor judgement - shame!

not a good face off this one, seems more like which has biggest installed operating system base, microsoft or mac os. many other operating systems ignored and many other personal computers ignored, what happened to the early low cost computers? What about the processors used, intel or amd?

As a MAC user Mr Bentley you would know that a MAC can run Windows software and that, even if it didn't, the cross compatibility issues are no longer an issue since Apple software (iWork for example) can convert documents to Windows or pdf formats for a PC to read and then infect with viruses. It can also import Word, Exel and Powerpoint without any problems. Yes, there are more games for the PC, but there's the PS3, XBox etc for that side of things. Accordingly, a MAC gives you all you would ever need in a computer- the ability to run quality software, and also Microsoft based software, on a quality machine. The MAC therefore renders the PC and its OS vastly out-dated or, dare I say, redundant.

Is there any chance that the presenters could stop using the term PC to mean Microsoft Windows? PC is Personal Computer. A Mac is a PC. A computer running Linux is a PC.. I'm a Linux user myself, and find it annoying that the presenters are buying into the Microsoft way of trying to cover up other Operating Systems available for use on a Personal Computer. Used to really love the show, but it seems that since PCWorld have been sponsoring the show only things Sold at PCWorld are given time. Bring back the impartiality of The Gadget Show.. PLEASE..

totally inaccurate - Macs run Windows or Linux or anything else perfectly well under emulation or native installed via Bootcamp software (free and provided by Apple). How can Gadget Show be so backward in their review to not mention that OSX is only available on Macs but all other operating systems also work on Macs and have done for years. The whole thing gets really proved wrong when the justification for PCs winning is that they are everywhere and in fact you mean Windows is everywhere. Macs are PCs too - always have been (Personal Computer does not equal a Windows box). Just the difference now is that Macs can run Windows if that is the customer's choice. With a Mac you have a choice of an exceptional OS (OSX) or any other that you might be used to. Try to run OSX on a generic PC system and you will find it frowned upon and complicated to say the least. Gadget show = total fail on this on and if you all claim to be using Macs then you knew this before you even made the segment. I guess those PC/XBox goodies mean more than just a prize in your weekly competitions.

I used to be a Windows user but I hate Windows and always have. I have finally bought a Mac and it is so much more reliable, faster and generally better. I now enjoy using my computer without the constant worry about viruses, spyware, trojans and obviously, the blue screen of death. Jon definitely got this wrong.

I've never commented on a website before but I now feel I must. Jon, my opinion of you has dwindled. What happened to quality? Is the Wall of Fame now purely driven by the popular? Sales figures rule? Jon himself called the PCs basically rubbish. What innovation in computing has not been created by Apple on the II or the Mac platform? I was stunned by this decison and I expected so much more of Jon, whom I have always considered to the be gadget connoissieur. I couldn't concentrate on the rest of the show!

I noticed a long time ago that Jon seems to be slightly biased against Apple products but this confirms it. The only positive thing Suzie (who is a Mac user) could find to say about Windows was that it's ubiquitous, but so are pigeons - and they fill the world with poo! At every step Windows has been 10 years behind the Mac OS, and when they do catch up it's a poor, unstable imitation that wastes years of our lives while it crashes, stalls and splutters it's way through our tasks - so why oh why oh why should they be celebrated above something that has been professionally and lovingly engineered to work?! Lame Jon, very lame.

I also agree that mac should have been chosen. Choosing PC is completely against the entire premise of the wall of fame which is not which is the most popular but which is better or more revolutionary and mac ticks both these categories. Jon said that PCs are terrible really and macs are definitely the more revolutionary being the company that first brought computers to the masses, before microsoft, so therefore he has simply chosen PC because everyone's got one. That's not wat the wall of fame is about. Far more people have DS' than original gameboys and yet the original gameboy went on the wall because it was a far bigger change in gaming as a whole.

Why did you choose pc, they are rubbsh i know they are cheaper but the mac is worth the money. Also the reason pc get more people buying it is because there are loads of pc companies so i believe mac are doing really well. maybe if there is a new mac vs pc thing on the gadget show choose mac NOT pc. I have a pc it is ok but i always want to replace it with a imac or macbook pro.Thanks. REMEMBER MACS ARE THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
