Finding prints charming
It’s amazing that nowadays, even though most of us own digital cameras, few of us reap the full benefits of them.
Posting your snaps to Facebook, Flickr or Twitter is all good and well, but given most cameras capabilities, it seems a shame to limit them to 72dpi on a computer screen – it’s time to free your digial images and get printing!
But with so many online digital printing services available, how do you know which one will deliver the perfect prints? In this week’s show I take a look at the leading online photo printing services and see which one is the prints charming (ahem) of the bunch. And the results are rather surprising…

What a wind up trying to watch this, tried it in different browsers, but at 1 min and 4 secs, it flips back to the beginning. In this case digital is not working for me, shame I can't print it.

Most digital photos have a width/height ratio of 4:3, whereas Snapfish (and most other) prints are "conventional" i.e. 3:2. So a Snapfish print of 6" by 4" has actually been cropped by half an inch - chopping the tops of heads off, for example. I always use Bonusprint, who offer both formats, though I believe Photobox does likewise. Save up until you have 100 or more and the price drops a lot.

Admittedly, not a review of online print quality, I found a local (Norwich) ASDA to be very good. They use Fuji Crystal Archive paper (which most places do). Very cheap if you can get a reasonable number to get printed in bulk (see their website). Calibration was accurate and colours were neutral and faithful. The crop was very small, and dis not detract from the intended image (all prints will have a small crop due to the issue with printing borderless). For you're information: Files were in 3/2 format. All files were Jpeg sRGB. The user kiosk machine was used, and all adjustments were turned off.

Following the recommendation on the show I ordered some photo gift mugs from Snapfish. The goods came back to me within the week but I am seriously disappointed in the quality of the printing. The photo's are much darker than in the peview - the Dalmation has almost disappeared into the background and my brother has black tramlines across his face. I have emailed them my thoughts.

Hi John Myburgh - try this link http://gethuman.com/ - it worked for me!... and while we're at it, what ever happened to the ISP speed ratings that 'The Gadget Show ' promised us, or did I miss it? I would really appreciate any info on that you 'Gadget Show' presenters, as my absolute CRAP broadband d/l speeds (stutter, sloooow, stutter, drop-outs, not connecting etc - and I have snapshot records) plus other things with the virgin package, need to be seen by ALL prospective virgin customers and my personal view is, DON'T SIGN-UP as you WILL be sorry, whatever they say in their adverts! I'll have a bet that in 2 months time I'll be a happy bunny - because I'm about to change ISP!! Mr. Aghrr. Angry
