am with BT who advertise up 20mb but I got a paltry Download 2.84 mbps Upload 0.37 mbps!!! Pitiful ! :( Now reviewing my provider ASAP as wont pay BT charges for these miserly speeds and this was DAYTIME = OFFPEAK!! Hang your heads in shame BT!

Advert speed up to 20mb....actual 3mb. Contacted Sky who were very helpful, but blamed it on the copper connection being 4300m from the BT exchange. This goes back to the old problem, who's going to upgrade the telephone system in the uk. The Government....unlikely. BT...only if they get the money from the customers....! Mind you its far better than the 45kbps we used to get from the modem's.There's always an up side!!

Very disappointed!! Not even 4mb. I am with Virgin and I think it's poor that I am paying for 10mb! Not as bad as some of the other comment, but maybe I should only be paying less than half the amount, for the service I am getting...I think a quick phone call is in order!

Sky claim upto 14.0mb download speed and 1.0mb upload speed for my everyday lite. After doing test a couple of times Im getting approx 3mb download and 0.5 mb upload. Dont look to good to me but as Im getting it free I wont complain to much and to be honest dont do much downloading/uploading. If I did then Id be causing a stir

I am with Virgin Media on the 10 mb deal and i am getting a download speed of 9.43 which is under 10 mb but not bad. The upload speed is very poor with 0.94mb but overall i am happy with it.

My speed used to be appaling I switched to pure wired connection and fitted cat5 cabling around the house. ditched the power line adapters which were worse than the wifi. I now get 32MB/s!!!! Get cat5 connected it does the trick all your others services will work now ;-) JeZ

While I agree that the speeds are normally nowhere near advertised (mine is about 2.5Mbs as I'm almost 3 miles from my exchange) you've got to be realistic as most broadband still arrives down telephone cables never designed for such traffic and as such the existing cabling doesn't do too badly. There is a possible downside to the "victory" claimed by your show with the ASA/OfCom wanting to change advertised speeds to average speed. If a company wants it's average speed to be higher what is to stop an ISP "dropping" (ending the contracts) to all it's low speed customers (who would mainly be in rural areas) to bring the average speed up...so it could legally advertise high speeds but leave large amounts of the rural communities without broadband!!

According to my ISP in my location I should be getting 7.5Mbs from a 24Mbs service - I'm actually getting 8.4Mbs down and 0.8Mbs up, so better than I thought, but not as good as I would like. We all want to get what we are paying for! Unfortunately I am in an area where there is only one provider, and dongles are even slower so no alternatives for me...

i have O2 broadband on a BT line, when i first took the service i had the 20 meg service, O2 called me and told me i was not getting the full service i was paying for and done some tests and downgraded my service so i got better value for money, i'm paying for a 10 meg service and get between 7.5 & 9.5 in most speed tests ...im happy and top marks for O2...AL..

I have a 50 Mbps connection with Virgin Media. This test showed a download speed of around 30 Mbps, off peak at 2:00 pm. http://www.speedtest.net/ showed a download speed of just over 49 Mbps. I suggest try as many as possible. Google 'Online speed test'

On the GS site it say's I am getting between 10mbs -1 1mbs, but all other speed checkers give the speed between 6mbs - 7mbs. Something not quite right here.

My speed is beyond rubbish. I've been complaining to Virgin since January about it, as it has been slow since 23rd december. Paying for 10MB. Just done 2 speed tests within 5 minutes of each other. 1st one 4.65 download 0.97 upload. 2nd one 1.7 download 0.97 upload. Off peak.

Why are you all moaning over your broadband speed? I think you should count your lucky stars. I am with Talktalk and I am getting a very poor 0.83 mbps d/load and 0.61upload!! How I wish I could get 1 or even 2 mbps. And yes I did say 0.83mbps. Talktalk state it is because I live so far away from the exchange (4km) and this is the best I can expect if I want a constant stable connection. Have checked my speed on here, results above, and on my talktalk site, this says I get 0.95 mbps, so not much difference there. Time talktalk got there act together, they promise you great connections because of the updating programme but I never see it........ not happy!!

Such a mixture of comments, such a lot of people probably duped into carrying out inproper tests. (poor servers etc) I'm with Virgin 50mb, cabled-up i get 50+ most ocassions, peak or not, On wifi, 'g' speed (laptop built-in), getting approx 30mb. On wifi 'n' speed with usb dongle, and 'n' speed router almost always get 50 mb. Am very happy with my service. PS..........having two choices, higher or lower than quoted by ISP is unfair maybe un-just. So if i get 49.99mb, i'm supposed to tick 'slower', and i bet not many people get 'higher'. There needs to be better choices to create an accurate picture, else this test/survey is as mis-informed as the ISP promise. Come on gadget show.............be fair !

Why does your speedtest give a download speed over 20Mbps lower than every other speedtest website available? This is a massive difference. I've spoken to others and they also say that it is much lower for them too. It's the same with upload speeds. It's all well and good getting people to check their speeds and complain, but shouldn't you at least try and give an accurate reading on which they can base their complaints?

Hi im on o2 broadband and used to get 5mb download speed. I put an adsl faceplate on my phone line instead of using the micro filters and within a day my broadband speed jumped up to the full 8mb that i pay for. I URGE EVERYONE WHO HAS A BT NTE-5 PHONE SOCKET TO GET A ADSL FACEPLATE. They are cheap to buy and once fitted your broadband speed will increase, you won,t have to use the microfilters.

Up to 20Mb is what BT quote. Killer is the 'up to' part. Big thanks to the Gadget Show team for getting Ofcom onto the ISP's, however, rather than getting the wording changed, shouldn't the ISP's actually give us what they offer. The UK is getting left behind in the worldwide technology race. Anyone remember the broadband speeds that The Gadget Show found in South Korea back in '09...between 50-100Mb and for around £10, what do we get, less than 10% of that and costs 50% more. Rip off Britain strikes again.

I was originally with AOL at an advertised up to 20mbs. The most I ever got was a bit over 5mbs. I had BT check my line before switching to Sky and was told that it could handle up to 15mbs. With Sky I have got speeds up to 16.4mbs so I'm a happy bunny.

Mine tested at 8.9 which i think is pretty good, as I tested using my home WiFi connection and at ten to 8. Im with Virgin and it appears much faster than those unfortunate to be with BT. Would be interested to see if the WiFi makes a big difference. PS I also think there should be a middle " about what i expected button"

Hi I should have upto 10MB with Virgin now must times I get very close but some times the cap the speeds down to 2.4Mb and even 1.6Mb , now They say that in peak times they may cap big users!! so From tomorrow I should be on 50MB and that isnt capped at all " so it says on the web site any way " I will test it and let you know

I pay for an 8mb line but was told that my line only supported up to 2mb. On a good day the best I have ever had is 0.73mb on the download speed!!! Why dont companies have unlimited downloads on slower speed packages for those of us who like to use online gaming etc???

I was with Tiscali and got 1.5-2mb download. Changed to Talk Talk phone & broadband, speed initially jumped to 12mb download but settled at 6-7mb after a month, wireless or ethernet. Very happy at this as monthly bill inc all calls and line rental under £30.00 Still no-where near the "up to 24mb" advertised ;-)

I live in Sunderland and was offered up to 8mb broadband at the point of sale. Later I call a call after signing to say it was only 5.5mb which I accepted. I've taken the test over three sites at 6am,6pm and 9pm and got a average of 1.5MB (not happy) the 9pm test showed 0.5mb-Shocking.

Absolutely pathetic 0.87mb/second download and 0.37mb/sec upload. Trust BT to let you down, I was promised 8mb/sec in my area but this doesn't even come close. I suppose they don't have to try as there is very little alternative in my area. When I complain to BT they don't want to know, I end up speaking to some braindead moron who is intent on following a script i.e. if this question is asked answer this. The fun start's when you ask a question not on their list. Please, Please can someone recommend a half decent service in my area as this is just abysmal.

The BT engineer is supposed to call tomorrow because we have lost our broadband 3 times this week and currently get 0.13 MB download and about twice that upload. Other websites suggest that the best speed in our area is about 0.8MB and 2MB is supposed to be possible. So much for the " up to 20MB " service.

I am with Talk Talk and am paying for "upto 24mb" in this test i got 9.6 mb. normaly it runs at 13-14.5 mb average. i do check it a few times a week at different times. the worst seem to be sunday night, monday after midday til late evening. it's a joke that people that live closer to the exchange pay the same as me for considerably more.

I,ve just moved and Virgin do not serve this area, after they said hey did, so i went for BT as they are a major company. My 20Mb speed fluctuates wildly and drops out and is half or less than the "17.5Mb" their quote i agreed on when i accepted their service. After endless calls to India two complaint references and a formal email to their complaints office i,m now 9 weeks into an 18 month contract and sick to death of their lies and misleading quotes and marketing. They have legal obligation to provide the service i need a good broadband service for work as i am severely disabled they don,t give a damn about the customer or their service, just the contracts i would leave them tomorrow but i don,t want them chasing me for breach of contract wish is ironic since they do whatever they want.

Hmmm 3.97MB on a upto 8MB they should revise the billing system and charge per .50MB but I bet the prices would go up not down, because based on that I would be paying £6 instead of £12. One thing I must say is I'm on O2 and they have been rock solid stable sometimes I do get more upto 4.50MB but its the reliability I think I'm paying for more than the speed and 8MB on a ADSL line is theortical not an actual or realistic speed. Still a blatant lie.

I live on the edge of a city of about 150,000 people. I subscribe to BT's top package and am totally loyal. I love the fact that I NEVER and I do mean never, get a problem. I always get good speeds. I know that I am not likely to get the top whack unless I live on top of the local switch, so I am happy. I run speed tests on a regular basis and get between 9 and 15Mbps depending on the time of day/night for downloads and up to 1Mbps for uploads. I would never change, unless I win the Gadget Show prize and have a freeby for a year (Tee! Hee!) The quality of my service is very important to me and I know a pay more for a BT service than I could get from another ISP, but continual, uninterrupted and good quality service is of the greatest importance to me.

I dont get why people try and come out with all this technical BS about BT, copper wires, near or far from an exchange whatever. It has nothing to do with the point broadband,s been round for years major company's are making a fortune for services they don't provide and using peoples ignorance to get away with it. Sky broadband up to 20Meg package. Terrible customer service and have never achieved more than 3.6 Meg (wired and wireless) except for the week long "bedding in" period for the modem, which at times exceeded 7meg. This suggests to me the connection is being throttled at some point. I just wish Virgin was available in the area I live. Just faster.

Broadband speed rated as 12.4 Mb downland and 0.98 Mb upload this is as expected from BT for my location. BBC iPlayer displays 13 - 14 Mb when I download from that site. One thing that can affect speed is turning your hub or router on and off, as the router and the network "talk" to each other to optimise the speed. It can take up to 48 hours to do this.

I am not people. I am a person. I am not coming out with technical BS. I am an experienced IT professional. I take great exception to your giving me a sideways swipe. I am 1.2 kilometers from an exchange. I know that attenuation plays a part in what I get base on my distance. I know others do not get as good a service because they are further away. no-one can do anything about that, unless the companies introduce some sort of unworkable system that charges you more or less based on your actual distance or average speed actually obtained over a month period. I liek the service I get from BT. I don't care so much about the fact that I am not able to download the entire internet in less than the time it takes to make a cup of tea. I want continous service. I want good customer service and a reasonable broadband speed will do. I connected computers together way, way before the internet was around. I've used modems at 8kbps and thought it was fast! The speed you get is relative. I bet it is faster than you could get only a couple of years ago and better than a lot of the world. I have had to cope with using a £100,000 Mini-computer with 64KB of RAM at a 35 mile distance and this was very slow, but at the time it was a darn sight faster than what we had before. I wait more than a heartbeat for anything on my computer now and think it is slow or gone wrong, but I KNOW that it is all relevant and that it is not worth getting your knickers in a twist about. Read a book and write your friends a letter. They will appreciate that and you might stay a little more calm. Oh! and one other thing broadband has not been round for that long. Computers have not been round for that long. For that matter electricity hasn't either.

What is the point of even checking? No-one that I know of receives the stated speed and the tester on five's The Gadget Show website is no better or no worse than any of the other numerous testers that have been available since I would say at least the mid to late ninties. a different result is given from one to the next. And as for their campaign for users to be told exactly what they are getting this has been going on for almost as long as people have had internet in their homes. I don't mean Five's campaign, I mean Offwatt looking into the situation. So basically Five is championing something that is, as the expression goes, old hat! The speed obtained varies for numerous reasons, depending on how close to the exchange the signal is sent from being one of them. the closer to the exchange the stronger the signal. Your Windows package will have errors; these errors will cause the speed to drop and if you clear up the ones you have they will come back, and if those ones don't then others will take their places again causing the speed to drop. Just two of the numerous reasons as to why companies, as annoying as it is, are legally allowed to say "up to'. So The Gadget Show stop championing something that Offwatt has been looking into and dealing with as best as they can since way before the first series, stop reading out the same statement, not word for word but the meaning is the same, stop claiming youselves to be the heroes of broadband consumers everywhere, because you're not. YOU ARE NOT EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE!!!!!!!!

Interesting results but it depends totally on which speed tester you use. For instance the BBC - http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/diagnostics Consisyently gives me my full 50meg link whilst this site only gave around 43meg. It really does depend on the site you choose and the one thing I have learned with all these testers is that they are unreliable as a measure of 'real' speed. Until we have a method of checking speed acurately then any measure just now is approx to say the least. If it 'seems' fast then it is and if it 'seems' slow then it too is.

I'm currently getting an Upload Speed of 0.23Mbps and a Download Speed of 0.37Mbps. The provider is currently quoting me a speed of UPTO 2.5Mbps on thier Web site. We have tried to contact them over the Phone, but keep being asked to do the same thing over and over again through thier automated help where you keep on inputting your phone number again and again. This went on for half an hour without any results. BT connecting people?

As advertised 10mb download...actual 9.67mb!!! I'm with Virgin Media, I don't actually like Virgin Media as they are expensive and have some questionable sales techniques but hey ho.....their broadband speeds are very very good (at least for me). I have carried out several speed tests using different checkers and at different times of the day, the above speed is pretty much the average. I'm sure they do throttle bandwith at times, on a few occassions I have only got about 3mb download but on average I'm over 9mb.

What I find odd is that, at the time of the test, my desktop item said my speed was 3.7Mbps but the test produced 0.7M for download and 0.3M for uploads. That 3.7Mbps alters dramatically throughout the day and is WELL below the "up to 8Mbps" but I expect that. But the 0.7M is miles behind what the PC thinks its getting. I don't get it!!!!

11:58 am. test result was 17mb down. I'm with BT on Infinity. When they first installed the router/modem the engineers test showed that I was getting the full 40 megs! Then after about 10 to 14 days I noticed the ping rates on online gaming were not as good. What I find interesting was when I first had the normal BT broadband I did not get any where near the 20megs, I was geting about 3-4 megs, then after about 10-14 days the speed droped to 1.5-2megs and stayed there. I asked if I was being throttled back but they said no. It seems to me that they are able to supply higher speeds but once you are set up with them THEY do cut your speed! I will test again in a week and see what I get. Will post here. BT are always very helpfull but will never admit to cutting your speed. ( apart from there FUP ).

When I first got Broadband (Orange) and it was very slow I was told it was because my telephone line was so far from the exchange that no matter what package I bought it would not get faster. A call to BT confirmed this so I have remained on a basic cheap package and the test suggests that was wise. PS I live in remote London WC1

Hi me again Like i said before I have just got Virgins new 50MB BB yes I have got 49,756 and 50,345 So Good old Virgin just whish the rest of the net / web sites could keep up :) I think reading through most of what people want is the speed that they was sold / pay for. A little slower isnt a problem but take my house hold we have 4 Pc's on the go all interent nuts either gaming or youtube / face book. now when I was on 10MB all was ok never had a problem just when they cap to 2.4MB gave me a problems Game Lag etc. that is why I went to 50MB if they do cap me say 1/4 of my speed it will still be over 10BM. but at 50MB They say they dont cap! we will just have to see. If your happy with your speed then thats ok but dont dish some one for trying to get the speed that ask for . and as for bad windows LOL most likely Antivirus Norton and alike slowers every thing down. many faults from window may slow it down a bit but not over 7MB

I'm with Virgin with 10mb connection. tested speed using a few different checkers and found to be very close to expected speed (9.2 to 9.5mb/sec and 0.45 to 0.48mb/sec upload). All in all an excellent service.

My broadband supplier is Virgin with 20MB. Speed test results Gadget show: 4.42MB/0.7MB Speedtest.net: 16.24MB/0.73MB broadbandspeedcheck: 11.808MB/0.718MB mybroadbandspeed: 18.895MB/0.732MB This would suggest that the tests are next to useless as all were run within 5 minutes.

Hmmmmmmm. I was on Tisc, and transfered when talk talk took over. This is a midweek test around 10 pm. Speed is advertised as up to 8mb, actual speed ohhhhh 0.38 mb. Not impressed with talk talk speed. I have managed to get nearly 7bm speed occasionally. I don' understand why it should drop from nearly 7mb to less than dial up????

I was with UK on Line Up to 2Mbps and got about 2.3 Mbps but went UK on Line was closed by Sky I went on their 20Mbps and I now get 1,5Mbp. I find this quite hard to understand as Sky bought out UK on Line and I assume that Sky will be using the same equipment at the exchange. I think it’s ridiculous for Sky to say that you can get up the 20Mbps I assume that is if you live next door to the exchange.

I have 50mb from Virgin Media and I do get the speeds I am paying for but your speed test is at fault as it appears it's not fast enough to cope with this sort of connection. Sky Broadband - Utter rubbish! My connection is throttled at peak times (i.e. it will never reach the maximum speed my line would allow) - evening and weekends can go as low as 0.7mbps!!! Sky say my line will give me 8mbps max (I'm on their "up to 20mb" service). During the day I never exceed 6.5mbps, and the evening I may as well not bother! Oh and I'm only 1.3 miles MAX from the telephone exchange. All I get from Sky is fobbed off excuses blaming my equipment - It's not good enough Sky, don't blame anyone but yourselves!

This speed test is not reliable at all. This test says I get 9.5Mbit connection. However with speedtest and test files from servers, I get the full 50Mbit/6MB/s download speed. I have a 50Mbit connection through Virgin. I know I have my full speed quoted. Use speedtest.net or use http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download and download a large file from their server. This will give you a true indication of their speed, and remember the difference between Mbit and MB!

Wow! My neighbours are all getting just over 3Mbps download and between 768kbps and 1.3Mbps depending on their supplier. I'm with Sky. My download is 1.3Mbps and upload is under 0.5Mbps. I definitely seem to be getting conned on this one. Especially as their sales staff were pushing their ability to provide 20Mb.

Im very confused! im with o2 broadband but through a BT line, BT say my line is only capable of 1.5mg download speed, but your test says im getting nearly 3mg!! i have checked with other speed checkers and all say nearly 3mg!! so how is that possible if my line can only do 1.5mg?? is BT capping my line??

BT infinity advertises 40mb. I got 19.97mb and 22.46mb on a different tester. I'm happy with the speeds I have compared to other people but it is still nowhere near advertised. When I had the BT total broadband which advertise up to 20mb I got between 0.5mb and 1.5mb speeds. So I totally agree that the advertising should be changed since both results are nowhere near the advertised speeds. PS. thank you gadget show for raising awareness of this problem

The problem I'm having is not with speed but with reliability: in the 6 months I've had my connexion I think there have been around 6 evenings when the service has stopped working altogether, for the entire evening. On one occasion it wasn't back even the following morning. That said, here's the speed facts: Virgin Cable Internet - paying for "up to 10M" and appear to be getting over 9M according to the Gadget Show speed test. Occasional tests from the PS3 network test facility shows I'm generally getting at least 8M each evening. In this respect then, clearly I'm perfectly satisfied!

Could I suggest 2 improvements to the test; advise users to be aware that using a cabled connection as opposed to wi-fi will give you a better result and more cause for complain rather than a throttled wireless reading. Also, instead of "Faster" or Slower" could we be given a "I'm Happy" choice for getting what we're paying for, or at least within a few %. Otherwise, a great resource that appears to have made Ofcom sit-up and take notice. Genuinely brilliant show - great characters... "record series".

I am paying for a service they are definately not giving or even bothering to improve or unlike o2 apparently even advise you that you are only getting 10% of the service should mean 10% of the cost in my book. I am with BT supposed to receiveing 20mb, welll I am not, while using the internet and someone uses the phone it locks off the connection. Phoned them to sort out the problem on two occasion, they said there sorting out from there end please allow 24-48hours for them to reslove the problem, lets just say the issue and has not improved at all. I cannot watch nothing on youtube or any video link progamme online due to the fact its so slow, along with the phone interupting the internet. What I would say anyone who may be considering BT, DO NOT BOTHER! I will not recommend anyone to go with BT, there lack of help is shocking, and poor and soon as my year contract is up, I will go else where.

Well, I used get 0.40 download and 0.24 upload when i was on SKY broadband, we were paying for 20mb. They claim that its our area... 'national area' and plus were too far from the BT exchange, So we decided to move to BT, and it kinda off improved we got 1.55 D/load and 0.55 Up/load. Futhermore we ended up calling BT, they tried their best to give us the closest to 20mb. And now it's 8.81 D/load and 0.89 Up/load. which I'm very happy with so far :) I really think BT should put some closer exchanges though.

Guys, don't be so sure about this test. I have virgin media fibre optic 30mb/sec broadband and I know that i'm getting that. This test told me i'm getting 3mb and the fact that i just downloaded a 400mb iPhone update in about 15 seconds so this is obviouly wrong.

I’m with Sky and took your speed test today, results were download = 1.38 Mbps and Upload = 0.36 Mbps. When I checked on the Sky website it initially brags about 20Mbps! When I checked my address it initially stated I could get up to 8Mbps, then further down was a statement that their current estimate was a maximum download speed my line could support is 3Mbps. Surely companies cannot boast these speeds and charge for them. Apart from those luck people who live 3 feet from the exchange, does anyone actually get 20Mbps? If I heard rings, buzzes and beeps when I switch on the computer I would be taken back to the early 90’s when dial up was the only way! Hang your heads in shame Sky and BT.

Your broadband speed depends on how long you phone line is, the longer the line the slower your speed. There are also other factors to this, internal extensions connected to the line can have detrimental effects to speed even if they do not have anything connected to them. There are so many factors that can effect speed. For anyone who is having really slow speeds I suggest that if you have a master socket known as an NTE5 where the bottom half of the socket can be removed to disconnect the internal extensions, that you do this and move your router to this location and plug it into the test socket, leave it connected here for at least a week and see if the notice any speed improvement, this will then rule out any internal wiring issues. A good source of information is www.kitz.co.uk which can be used to guide you through what I have mentioned above, If none of this helps and your speed is still slow, and you do not have a long line from the exchange then I suggest that you contact your ISP to get things checked. I have carried out a speed check on this site and got the following results Download 16.4mbps and Upload 1.01mbps, I live approx 1.2km from the local BT exchange and I am on an upto 20mbps service from BT, I am very happy with this speed, it does fluctuate at busy periods, but never to an extent where I cannot use it. I hope the information above will be of some use.

Two observations: Until we are all either living next to the exchange, or have FTTH (Fibre To The Home) we will never get the full-advertised “up to” speed; period. What the Gadget Show should be spending their energies on is getting the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) and the mobile phone companies to make the word ‘Unlimited’ mean just that, unlimited, and not hide behind the vague term ‘Fair Use Policy’, and/or get charged for going over a limit on a ‘Unlimited’ plan! Three have stared the ball rolling with their “All You Can Eat” plan.

Hi i have BTs unlimited broadband and when i changed over to them 18 months ago i had a 3.5mb speed.Now when i check with them it varies sometimes its 1.5mb and others 2mb.I have just gone your test and it was 1.88mb.I dont have much choice either the cheapest i can find is only £7 a month less but only has a 10gb download limit instead of unlimited.I cant get any of the cheap offers like skys or others as my exchange doesnt look like its ever going to be updated and i cant get virgins cable one either.I live on a big estate in Ashford Kent and broadband around here is rubbish. I'm with Sky Broadband ("UP TO") 8Mbps. However I was told that the maximum I could receive was 5Mbps. Just did the speed test. It came out with a 0.71Mbps download speed and a 0.34Mbps upload speed, which added together makes 1.05Mbps. This is absolutely terrible. I'm receiving anywhere close to 5Mbps never mind 8!

We're with sky broadband who advertise 'up to 20 meg' speeds. We were told at sign up that in our area it would be more like 18 meg. I've just done your test and download speed is 11.02meg. A big difference from what we were promised, and only marginally better than Virgin, who we were with previously.On Virgin's 10 meg package we averaged around 8 to 9 meg speeds.

Hi, I'm on Virgin's 30Mbps packgage and tests such as Speedtest.net usually state I have just over that and around 1.04Mbps upload speed. The Gadget Show / Think Broadband results were slighlty less (29.05 upload and 1.02 download). So I'm quite happy but think its ridiculous that people are getting such slow speeds compared to what they pay for. I do suggest that you try the other tests too as the Gadget Show test consistantly gave me results between 5 and 6 times slower than reality for downloads the last time I tried ( a number of times at different times of day - my "reality" is what Speedtest.net tells me LOL) so I didn't have much confidence in it. I wonder what they changed and how technical configuration of the test system affects the results (I know there wass at least one other Virgin customer whos results were innacurate using this test).

I pay for "upto" 8Mb, Through the day when the whole world (including me) are at work, I get around 7mb with an actual rate of 6mb www.speedtester.bt.com In the evening, it has suddenly dropped to below 550kbps from 6pm till very late at night. BT wholesale wont fix it because I am not a priority. I don't understand why the regulators do not get on this. BT are allowed are sharing the bandwidth between far too many households without upgrading their own equipment. I am at a loose end for the next 3 weeks until I can complain to the regulators, who advised me they don't deal with broadband speeds unless it has been mis sold. They cannot force anyone to upgrade their equipment, as unlike a phone line, they are not oblidged to sell me a service.

I am with Talktalk on their Plus package. Advertised upto 24 meg, i sync at 12meg and get just over 10meg using wireless, or 11meg using ethernet. I am very happy with the speed i get from them as when i originally joined the speed was only upto 8meg (used to get 7.5) before they updated their network.

Advertised = up to 20mb Actual = 1mb. Hats off to GS for raising awareness on this. More pressure should be placed on BT who own the network to unbundle the exchanges. Like any business they need to except the 'rough with the smooth' and allow everyone to have an acceptable level of broadband speed across the country not just in the well populated areas. BT recently ran a 'Race To Infinity' competition whereby those who heard about the competition (poorly advertised) were able to vote (per household) in order to be the next exchange to be 'Unbundled'. 5! yes only 5 out of the whole country we accepted to be unbundled! Come on BT this simply isn't acceptable and come on David Cameron businesses are loosing out across the UK! P.S. Paying for 20mb but actually only got 18.6mb d/load on this test. Personally I use the iplayer diagnostic to check my download and streaming speeds but usually I get 19.5mb download. Still reading some of the other comments about how fast your speeds are, I have to say that my results are very pleasing. I have checked with the BT infinity checker and if I pay for their 40mb I will actually only get 8mb because of the distance from the box. I think I'll stick with Virgin media. I always get above 15mb download but if it ever does go wrong, I complain and they very often they'll take a fiver off the bill, so there's very little to moan about really.

Gadget Show checker puts me at 13.81 mbps upload (slower than I thought) and 0.7 upload. However the two other speedchecker links both put my upload speed at around 19.4 mbps and between 718 and 730 kbps upload. I'm on Virgin broadband and have been paying for up to 20 mbps so the second two testers indicate my connection is about right. What I don't understand is - a) why only 13mbps with the Gadget show checker and b) why Virgin told me just before Christmas that they had upped my upload speed to 30mbps for no extra charge? Clearly they've done no such thing.

Had BT Broadband Option 2 which promised speeds up to 20mb and discovered - thanks to Gadget Show - that I only getting 4.34! BT's response to my complaint was laughable! However, for reasons best known to myself I have now upgraded to Fibre Optic on a promise of up to 40mb and their test showed (them) I could get 36.5. Nice! Just tested this again and getting 29mb :(

I'm with Virgin on the 50mb. For the last 3 months I have been telling Virgin that my internet is very poor. Just did the Shows speed test and got DL 0.05 and UP 4.16. I'm really lucky atm to see +5mb. All Vingin keep telling me is "there's work on the line". The last time I phoned them I was told all work would be over by the 6th March, it's now the 24th March and it's still the same. Virgin just don't want to lissen. There happy to take your money for a service there not giving. Just did the test again and it's now DL 3.25 and UP 2.89 (best it's been for the last 3 days). So much for 50mb.

After doing an original test and getting 0.97mbps, I tweeted my disappointing results and made sure I included TalkTalk in the tweet. That day, I got a DM from them asking my details - the next day they phoned and said they'd improve it. Today, (a couple of days later) I am now on 3.xx MBPS, a three times improvement. I am with BT (there is no other option in my area) My download speed has been between 0.18Mbps for days and now 4.5Mbps after raising a complaint with their call centre abroad. The upload speed is a paltry 0.25 to 0.56Mbps also. If there was cable or another alternative provider I would dump BT faster than their connection speed.

When I tested my home broadband connection (Post Office top package) I was very disappointed as only got 5mbps when I was paying for minimum of 8mbps. I have just done another test using my mobile phone as my wifi hotspot and I am amazed at the speed 1mbps I know isn't alot but for a connection running through a mobile phone I think is really good considering people are only getting 1mbps with their home broadband connections. Im supposed to be LLU on a 16 meg service yet the download test says my speed is under 2 meg! ISP's say its because Im 1.5 km from the exchange but I used to get 6meg download speed. my phone line is over 30 years old and under ground bt now there is a folt on the line 3 years ago an engernear found it they did not acked on his report to replace the line claim no such report was put in its been 5 years now and some days no 1 can call us. if i fall over i nee an ambulence but they claim they carnt finde a folt now. we have joined bt broad band in hopes they will do some think, so its not just how they word it, it the facked that bt will not relpace phone lines for jow bloges

I'm with Virgin Media on a 50 MB package. When I test my speeds through your site my download and upload speeds are very poor. However, this is not accurate because testing my speeds on other sites give me much faster speeds. I usually get a 40-48 MB download speed and 4.8 MB upload. These figures, I believe are more accurate than the gadget shows speed testing software. Remember, "ping" is critical too.

Wow, our house is supposed to get 20MB/S from sky but I've tested 6 times now and the peak (term to describe the top of a wave) was 12.8MB/S and the trough (term to describe the bottom of a wave) was 2.5MB/S.

I was getting 2.5mb max with our only choice (Karoo in Hull) supposed to get upto 10mb. Called them to complain got an email back saying do this do that, non of which worked. Called them back and engineer put me on a 12mb profile and I got 11mb download! turns out they hadnt updated my profile on their system now getting a steady 8.5mb download and .90mb upload.

recently having swapped providers twice previously being with B T then sky had a daytime rate both at around 4.5m and evening of around 0.5m!!! Now with talk talk I have 11m daytime and 5.5m in the evening. I had thought this was because of living in the country and being far away from an exchange. I know I do not get my promised 20m from any provider but if Talk can get my speed to a reasonable level then why can't the other providers?!

Signed up to talktalk phone and broadband they claim upto 24meg download speed but in the day time ie at 10am its 9.69 download speed and 0.64 upload which is ok. The quickest i get is 11.58 download and 0.78 upload speed but thats at 2am.over all not to bad but no where near the 24meg they claim. If you can get fibre optic connection then do so it cant be beat

just give your test ago and got to say it seems a bit of, i know for a fact i get 11.3 mb download and 1. something for upload, but just want to say . im on sky with talk tv and now that new sky plus anytime dealy wich ,,, i have to say is brillian, i was a sky hater up till a few month ago. all in all i pay around £40 a month for tv calls and really fast broadband and if your a gamer perfect ;). not advertising but i live on a budget and this is the best deal out there bt faster but 10 gig linit !!! sky truly unltd with no slow down at all,,, cheers for listening to my rant, love the show keep it up,,,:) p.s im promised up to 20mbps but im not complaining, that would be greedy :)

I have just done 3 speed tests on 3 different websites and got 3 very different answers. All give similar upload speeds but the download speeds are not the same. I am with 02 and should be getting up to 8mbps. The gadget shows test says I'm getting about 2.5mb, another website said 4.5mbps and another said 6mbps?!? Who do I believe?!?

We signed up to the talktalk plus package (unlimited broadband/anytime calls £27.99p/m) some time ago and on sign up, we were promised a speed of 6.5mbps, which was really good considering how far we were away from the exchange. But we have been consistently getting AT LEAST 11.5mbps download, even at peak times! Very impressed with talktalk-as I have children who are very heavy XBOX live users! Thank you talktalk! :)

Just taken your test and got less than 1 Meg download I am paying for 10 Meg with virgin media they never deliver what they say and their own test seconds after this stated I was getting over 9meg, but then this is typical of Virgin they don’t even respond to e-mails or complaints -ever.

Why is the UK in the dark ages when it comes to broadband, unless you live in or near a city the service is next to useless. Where I live most can only get the internet on dial up though I am lucky in being able to have broadband. Ok it can take a minute or 2 to load a page but at least I've got broadband. Maybe in 20 or 30 years we will get a decent service and speed (not that I'll be around in 20 years time) but some might benefit.

I was with UK Online until Sky bought them out. It has taken 5 months to switch me to Sky's "up to 20MB" Unlimited broadband due to one muck up after another. I was told I would get around 3 MB speed (which was a small improvement as UK Online was only offering me 2), and now doing your test it seems I'm only getting 0.84. Reading all the other posts, it seems to me that it doesn't matter who you are with or what package you are on, you will be getting a poor service.

Results expected from Sky, the router says 896 kbps for the Download speed and 416 kbps. Since I have no other option, I have to pay Sky for this appalling speed. Since I live 3 miles outside the City Centre of Leeds, I expect to get almost the advertised 20mb. Virgin Media are not in my area but if they were, they would make a fortune from their packages.

I am on Sky Connect which is a BT wholesale product... My link (ADSL) speed is connected at 8mb/s... My service is 'up to 8mb'... But during peak times the service is traffic managed and I get 0.05mb/s download and 0.36mb/s upload... The upload speed is always the same... Outside of peak times I get around 6.5mb/s... So 0.05 is the same speed I used to get on dialup and more than 100x slower than the service advertised... I don't blame Sky because it is BT that have imposed these restrictions which make any streaming (inc Youtube) impossible and internet radio has to be confined to outside of peak hours... BT maintain that they have to take these measures to protect the service for all users... This is complete hogwash and is nothing more than a 'convenient excuse' - network speeds have never been higher and these are not being passed on to the consumer... Why? BT appear to have done enough to create a wholesale product that ticks Ofcom's boxes... But this product is totally anti competitive as the BT retail product does not have this restriction whatsoever! Obviously in areas where the broadband choice is between a BT wholesale product and a BT retail one - the BT wolesale product will always be substandard as they have a vested interest to provide the service directly and obviously it is there hope to gain the direct custom of disgruntled BT wholesale product customers... In the meantime it is the customer facing retail provider (Sky etc) that gets a bad reputation due to BT's practices... OFCOM should be taking action against BT rather than standing idly by twiddling their thumbs!!! In the year 2011 is it really right that our broadband speeds are the same as dialup speeds of old?

I am with sky who told me the maximum speed is up to 20Mbps, after doing a check the results were 11.4Mbps downloads & a measly 0.83Mbps upload speed. I have done the check around peak times, i will report the speed at off-peak later. I am rather pleased with the download speed, although i know it could be better with the uploads

Just checked my phone internet speed! this was faster than what our old broadband connection was. Its 0.9mbts and thats with another person using the connection! we used to get on average 0.7mbts with bt, but with 3 surfing isnt a nightmare! plus its a lot cheaper as no line rental!!!!!!

So I am paying for "up to 8mb" broadband and am getting 0.7. Hmmm. This is an average tested at different times of the day and at weekends/weekdays etc. Not once have I got even near 8mb. The highest ever was 2.2mb.

Tested at various times of the day never more than 8M download, and when my son starts on the xbox it is like being on dialup. I live less than 1/2 a mile from one of virgin media's hubs. I am an electronics engineer I understand the limitations latency, bandwidth, etc. What annoys me is the ever increasing price with little or no improvement in speed. And now virgin are marketing, claiming 30M, I don't believe anyone will get this unless they start putting a fibre all the way into my modem.

I live in a village on the outskirts of a major city in England and have a BT line and broadband package. I knew the expected speed was not great ~1MB DL, but had little choice for getting anything faster from anyone else (no fibre in the village). So, I paid the £17 per month and put up with the actual 0.8MB I actually receive (and have done for approx 2yrs now). However, recently this has halved to 0.4MB DL (any time of day), which is really pushing my patience. Calling BT about this, the only advice I got was to Defrag my new PC and delete the wireless networks visible (that I do not use and am not connected to) in my wireless networks list - WHAT??? POINTLESS ! Am sure they must know more, but are simply not telling me. HHHHmmm. Many people are complaining about speeds of 2MB DL and up, which in my eyes would be perfectly adequate. I agree that we should pay for what we get, but let's first get a basic service level rolled out to most users (1MB DL would do). How about some cooperation between the CSP's so that fibre installs cover different areas and don't overlap each other?? (am sure they would have a reason why they cannot do this though). I can't ever see that I will get a decent service from a fixed line in my area, so roll on the mobile network service developments that are ongoing (HSPA/LTE etc). Again this will take time, but I am sure it will come faster than any upgrades to the ancient fixed services...

Virgin Media's service has fallen apart over the last 6 or so months. They've introduced a new version of their throttling software which is killing services like xboxlive and psn network. Their new superhub is fundmentally flawed and no amount of firmware revisions has fixed it (and theirs been many) Youve only goto read virgin media own forums to see how unhappy alot of customers have become. I myself went from a happy 10meg customer to an upgraded 20meg customer paying more for a service that rarely hits 2meg nowadays. To sum it up! virgin media is all spin and and no substance.

I've just had BT Infinity fitted,The engineers test showed i was getting 32MBPS 24 hours later on your test plus others around the net it has dropped down to 10-13MBPS .Upload stays the same around 8MBPS.As many others have said adds promote 40MBPS.

Since my previous post I now realise that BT are actually restricting my service to 500Kbps. Having complained 3 times that my IP profile has been set at this level and requesting that it be increased to 1Mbps (so that I can again achieve my max 800-900Kbps), nothing has been done. I am not an outrageous user of bandwidth (less than 10GB per month), so I do not see why they would do this? Although it doesn't sound like much of an improvement, at this low level it makes all the difference. Yet each time I contact BT they blame the matter on my HW, filters, wireless settings etc. I try to explain the coincidental matter of the IP profile and max DL speed being exactly the same value, but they just ingore this fact. I am paying for a 20MB service and am getting 0.8Mb. I feel I should restrict my payments to BT at the same level...sure they wouldn't like that now would they !!

Speeds have been getting progressively worse over the past few years, so I complained to Virgin Media, my ISP, today. Without any pushing, they immediately changed my package to 'up to 20 Mbps', from 'up to 10 MBps', at no extra cost, and are sending a new cable modem, FOC, which they say may be the cause of the slow connections. That's useful for other people to try, if it brings speed increases. With the old modem, and testing with Speedtest.net, which gives higher figures than the Gadget Show test, I was getting 0.48 MBps upload speeds, and 2 - 4 MBps download speeds between here and Manchester, a short path. Ping times were, and still are around 20ms. I'm now getting the same download and ping figures, but uploads now run at 0.72 MB's. The new modem might change things, so I shall report back after it has been installed.

going thru the mill with BT again, when I ring and voice opinions I get fobbed off or moderately altered speeds, leave for a few days and down go the speeds again, only live 1.4 KM from the exchange {cable length} but that has a section of 80mtrs of Aluminium cable which wrecks the speed. they won't change that out until it fails completely, so stuck with this, like most my speeds vary enormously, tested with BT tech support at 18.30 tonight, got 6.3 meg download, another test at 23:30 hours and that has halved suprise suprise, I won't be letting this go, feel a battle looming so digging in.... don't give up folks,, where them down and comp;ain {not moan}..

Hello I am a customer of BT broadband and my internet speeds are incredibly slow at times. I live in Crumlin, Northern Ireland I am also often charged extra because I apparently go over my usage limit which is 10GB, I only use the web for emails, facebook and a few other basic purposes and I don't play any online games or download over 10GB. BT should not be allowed to advertise not only fast, but unlimited internet when this is simply not the case.

ive just done a 4 way test using various sites results, im on virgin upto 10mb gadget show - 2.51 download 0.99 upload broadband choices - 3.4 down 1.0 up speed test - 2.8 down 0.99 up speed checker - 3.14 down 0.98 up taken at 00:12 uk time in the s.yorkshire region my connection is wireless and using bog standard kit so if i used a direct wire into pc or had better wifi toys then my scores would be double which is what i pay for so if your using a wireless laptop with the wifi box that you got from your isp then chances are all you need to do is plug a wire from your wifi box to your laptop/pc and your speeds will double and judging by other companys virgin seem the best at the minute ....bt will need to get that infinity finalised and made finite sharpish

Talk Talk said the best speed i could get at my address was 10.5Mb. After a few tests I'm getting 7.2Mb at peak times and 9.3Mb off peak. Thats pretty close but still under what they said I would get when they sold it to me.

As a fan of the Gadget show since its inception, I'm dissappointed to say I feel a bit let down. I've had and lost an argument with Virgin about braodband speeds. Using your on line tester I was consistently getting between 6 & 8 meg download and 1.6 to 1.9 upload speeds. thinking I was on a 10meg (L) package with virgin I was comfortable with this. However on checking a recent bill I found I was actually on a 20meg (XL) package. I duly challenged Virgin accusing them of overcharging me etc. etc. They tested the speed in my presence and came up with 18.47, and 1.9 mps respectively. Coming back to your web site I ran the main test and got 7.01 amd 1.8. reading on I then found the other two tests you recomend. The first (broardband speed checker) gave me a speed of 4.1 and 0.9 - but the second (speedtest.net -which was the one the virgin engineer used) gave an amazing 19.7 and 1.9 mps rating. So who do I believe?? How can an ordinary home user like me know if he is getting what he is paying for? Sincerely Disillusioned Bill

I'm over moon, 6.6mbps. fifteen years i had to get a book find out something, or send a letter or make a phone call to contact someone, go down the bank, cash machine or post office to pay bills check account etc. go to the shops to buy things now i can do all this and much more in the comfort of my armchair. which to me means that 6.6mbps is quicker than all of that. The trouble is everyone soon forgets what we had and just keep moaning about what we have.

I find adverts for 'broadband speed of UP TO 20MBPS' extremely irritating. I live in the countryside (in a village, not the sticks) and have been told that I will not receive this as I live quite a way from the exchange, fairly reasonable I suppose. However, I have recently been experiencing very slow broadband as I have been working from home during the day, so I decided to complete another speed test. Download speed of 0.16MBPS and upload speed of 0.23MBPS!!! What a joke!
