CES 2010 - more "Slates" emerge

CES 2010 - more "Slates" emerge The Lenovo U1 – the future of mobile computing?

As I commented yesterday, one of the big trends of CES has been tablet PCs,as every manufacturer joins the rush to pip (if you’ll excuse the pun) Apple to the Slate post.

As well as the HP Slate that I mentioned previously, there’s been a slew of new devices hoping to make the most of touchscreen tech to produce, carry-anywhere tablet PCs.

Dell has also outed a 5inch touchscreen slate concept that looks more like a massive iPhone than a scaled-down notebook. Whether it has a 3G chip, we’ll have to wait and see.

Elsewhere, Lenovo made an ingenious laptop/tablet, named the Lenovo U1. It features two processors and runs full Windows 7, but the best bit is that you can detach the screen and carry it around as a full multitouch tablet.Nice.

And there’s more! Tablets specifically designed to be home “command centres” also featured at the show, most notably hubs the Android-powered Vega and the Sony Dash.

Looks like Apple has some tough acts to follow – what do you think the iSlate will have over the competition? And are you tempted by the new tablet trend? Let us know below…

I will be buying an 'iSlate' if it's announced on 23rd. The selling point of these gadgets isn't the tech but where they fit in the market. Just as the iPhone converged the PDA and the mobile, the iSlate could converge the kindle and the netbook. What the companies releasing at CES should worry about though is the percieved better reliability of the Apple iSlate. Playing on a HP Touchscreen for more than 5 minutes makes the screen unreadable without cleaning the fingerprints off, a problem i don't have on the iPhone. Also i'd back Apple to deliver the complete package. If rummours be true, both software and book publishers have signed up. The App store and iTunes is already in place and the Air has proved how sexy (yes sexy) and functional a laptop could be. Can't wait!

I've had an Electrovaya tablet PC for a few years and the concept is great - true mobile computing. The issue for me was that as apps got more power hungry the 900Mhz processor just got too slow. the combination of either iPhone or Android OS on something around 7 - 10" sounds very attractive. Putting windows on one of these devices seems like overkill and means you either need a big SSD or power sucking hard disk. Thin, Light and low power would seem to be the ideal choice. It's not going to replace a Laptop - but then these dont seem to be aimed at that!

I have an ipad, I love it, I mean i really love it. Again apple hit the market and people calling it an over sized iphone, maybe yes we all have the image of Dom Jolly running around shouting HELLOOOOOOOOO! into it, Now as with most of the iphone wanna bees, copying the design style, shall we be waiting for another load of ipad clones or will the competition actually wow us with a completly new design from the ground up, what will they do different to make it stand out. I'd whole heartedly agree that apple is pricey, but anything i have bought apple i have never looked at it and said i'm unhappy about my buy, not like microsoft I've had enough them. with that said, £25 for a bumper, £25 ARE YOU MENTAL, apple really need to take a step back there and think yeah maybe a £5 would look better, although we're all getting one for free now, I don't need one but hey it's free and i'll be having it lol. Just like the IT Crowd, Getting something Apple for free, we're living the dream
