Apple vs Palm: the battle rages on!

Apple vs Palm: the battle rages on! Apple has halted the Pre's ability to synch with iTunes by issuing an update for the software

The war between Apple and Palm is hotting up. After Apple claimed that the Palm Pre was a direct threat to its intellectual property, it’s now issued an update for iTunes that renders the Palm Pre’s ability to sync up with it useless! How did Pre like them Apples? Not very much…

The relations between Apple and Palm are pretty much at an all-time low, with Apple’s latest update for iTunes, 8.2.1, ending the Palm Pre’s ability to sync directly with the music download software – so no more transferring the (non-DRM) music or videos bought from the iPhone store.

The whole debacle has clearly annoyed Apple, who released this statement about iTunes 8.2.1: “it disables devices falsely pretending to be iPods, including the Palm Pre. As we’ve said before, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with unsupported digital media players.” Strong stuff!

That said, Palm hasn’t been too disheartened with it all, replicating with a statement of its own: “If Apple chooses to disable media sync in iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users.” They also point out that as long as you don’t update iTunes you’ll still be able to sync your Pre with it.

So the battle continues. Who will win the war? Can Palm take on the mighty Apple and win? Who knows? Things should hot again later this year though, when the Pre gets its UK release exclusively on O2. Watch this space.

Whatever people think of Apple, Palm shouldn't have promised their users that they could sync with iTunes, without getting permission from Apple first to use their software. It's a bit like selling a car accessory on the basis that it fits exactly into a Ford Focus somewhere. If Ford change the next model and it no longer fits - tough luck - you shouldn't promise it in the first place.

so that means you should only fill up with FORD petrol for your FORD car then does it?? Never heard anything so silly in my life why shouldnt you be able to use other equipment with itunes? I am sure Apple want people to use itunes even if they dont have an ipod so whats the problem if they decide to sync with another device? especially if they are still getting the money purchases from itunes!

i think apple is bing a bit dull here if it wants to expand it's consumer market surely it would be a good idea to allow the pre users to use itunes as well? im looking forward to the UK arrival of the palm pre and according o the us site it's about 200 US dollars so it'll be about 180 pounds over here so i think a load of kids will be having it this Christmas including me :)
