Great Estates - Skoda Superb
Features | about 1 year ago
Jonny indulges in one of his favourite subjects – massive estate cars. Despite manufacturers offering an increasing array of niche models, some of the best ever estates have recently been released. Top of the list is the enormous Skoda Superb Estate, which Jonny thinks might just be the best estate ever. To find out if it is, he conducts some tests against legends such as the Volvo 850 T5-R and Mercedes W124, as well as utilising some 'false dogs' from Life Like Friends.

So basically what your saying is a 30K Skoda is 1db quieter than an old Mercedes with considerably more miles and quicker off the line than an old Volvo again with considerably more miles. Forgeting the fact that the Volvo is 2.3 Turbo the Skoda is running a 3.0 V6 with a DSG gearbox. If that DSg gearbox is so good it should let a 2.0 come off the line quicker. The Volvo is running an 5 speed standard box. Does this make the Skoda impressive? I think not. Would this make me want to buy one? It would in fact make me want to save a heap and buy an early 90's Volvo R.

I am a huge fan of the Superb Estate and totally agree with Jonny that it is a tremendous car with the full range of abilities. However, the 3 litre V6 that he drove is an irrelevance today. Probably the press or dealer demos will be the only ones ever to be "sold". The 2.0 TDi 170 Elegance costs just under 25K, has all the kit that you would ever need as he says and is the "real word" ultimate car. About the only neagtive that you could level at the Superb is that it is too big but that is an issue that we could all learn to live with in the £18-25k bracket. Volvoman, I hear what you are saying and the T5 was a fantastic car and image builder for Volvo but times move on. I tried an XC60 which was great and perfect for today's family man but well over £30k for a decently specced model is no contest against the Superb.

As ever, good to see Jonny championing estates which should not be forgotten amongst all the current crossover/soft roader craze. I am a huge fan of the Superb Estate and you cannot argue with its all round abilities and his "tremendous" verdict. However, the 3.0 litre £30K V6 petrol is totally irrelevant today and no-one in their right mind would buy one. You could not argue against the 2.0 TDi 170 as the best car "in the real world" and they're less than £25k fully loaded in Jonny's "Elegance" test version spec. Volvo Turboman, the T5 is rightly a legend and was a huge image builder for Volvo in its day. Times move on and the "bang on trend" Volvo XC60 is a great new incarnation of the Volvo family hold-all but the equivalent model to the Superb Estate is well over £30 grand!

Don't get me wrong the Superb is probably exactly that.. Superb. My problem lies in a television programe that is supposed to be a consumer advice show as opposed to what it clearly is, a paid advertisment. Why use old cars they ain't proving any points, If they wanted to show cabin refeinment then use a new Mercedes Eclass petrol estate. They did use a new Merc estate to show boot size after all. And for a performance estate why not a new Volvo V70 T6 AWD for engine spec and drive capabilities it would be at least equal. If they have to use old cars then why not a late 90's Volvo V70 P1 R AWD I think we'd have seen a much different result.

Only a repair: that wasn't a Volvo 850 T-5 R, that was a Volvo 850 R! And, I still think that, making a test between a new Skoda Superb V6 3.2 liter AWD (300 hp) and an 15 years old Volvo 850 R 2.3 liter FWD (250 hp in new) is just... well... And not "winning" for that much... The Volvo is really superb!
