Police bust illegal Hockenheim night race
German police are set to fine around 100 people who tried to take part in an illegally organised night race at the Hockeheimring German Grand Prix circuit last weekend.
The group of 43 cars arrived in ‘flash mob’ style after organising to meet over the internet and has gained access to the track before police showed up in force after a tip-off.
The deserted circuit was said to be almost abandoned at night with minimal security, allowing the renegade group of racers to take full advantage.
Officials say all will be "heavily fined" for trespassing, but there is no law against illegally staging a night race in Germany and no property was damaged during the incident, so matters are unlikely to go any further.
It is thought the group had previously got away with similar illegally organised meets before at circuits around Germany, but the number of participants had grown too big to keep this meeting away from the attention of police.
