Mercedes takes over Brawn GP
Mercedes-Benz has bought 75 percent of the Brawn Formula One team in conjunction with an Abu Dhabi investment firm.
The move means that McLaren will buy back the 40 percent shareholding Mercedes holds in the in the Woking-based race team, although the German carmaker will remain as McLaren’s engine partner until 2015, continuing to supply free engines and sponsorship.
The move is increasingly likely to mean Jenson Button will join McLaren as Lewis Hamilton’s teammate next season, as Mercedes has expressed no interest in keeping the British driver on at Brawn.
It is understood that Button visited the McLaren headquarters in Woking on Friday and is rumoured to be joining the team for a salary thought to be double what the Brawn team had been offering.
The Brawn team will be renamed Mercedes GP, although it is believed Ross Brawn will remain as team principal. Nico Rosberg is expected to be the team’s lead driver, with Nick Heidfeld as his partner.
