Effortlessly cool and beautifully finished, the DS3 makes a good alternative to the Mini or Fiat 500.

Fifth Gear Citroen DS3 review

1. Fun to drive
2. Quality interior
3. Range of customisation options

WE DON'T LIKE

1. Bit pricey fully kitted out

If you're after a stylish and fashionable three-door hatchback, there are more models than ever to choose from. The Mini has been a blinding success, as has Fiat's revival of the plucky little 500. And now Citroen is in on the act too, although unlike the Mini and 500 the only thing retro about this offering is the name.

The DS3 is the first in a new line of high-end models from Citroen which will tie in with its current model range ' DS3 will sit alongside the C3, DS4 with the C4 and DS5 with the C5.

First impressions are that the DS3 is a staggeringly good looking hatchback, with interesting lines and features. Inside you'll find a beautifully finished interior, which is largely based on the C3 but with various dash and seat personalisation options.

As with Mini, there are 38 roof and body colour combinations along with matching alloy wheels and a variety of roof decals to choose from ranging from stripes, spots or a tribal pattern depending on your taste.

Under the bonnet there's a choice of three petrol engines; VTi 95, VTi 120 and the BMW co-developed THP 150 which can also be found in the Mini Cooper S. As for diesels, there are two versions of the 1.6-litre HDi offering 90 and 110bhp, while there is also a 99g/km CO2 version of the 1.6 HDi 90 available.

The DS3 feels much sharper to drive than its C3 sibling thanks to its lower body and stiffer suspension set up. Yet the damping and ride is also pretty good, with only heavily rutted roads causing the car to bobble around. The DS3 seems well balances too, sticking neatly to its line through corners.

In terms of practicality, the DS3 is longer and wider than the Mini and Fiat 500 and those extra dimensions have gone straight into the interior. Citroen claims it will seat three in the rear, but although there is a decent amount of space, it is better suited to two for a longer trip. The boot also offers more space than its rivals with 285 litres.

Overall the DS3 is a quirky and chic little car that not only looks good, but is engaging to drive and should prove fairly practical on a daily basis. The personalisation options are one step further than that already offered by Fiat and Mini, and add a level of individuality to the car which, for any buyer, will make the DS3 feel a little bit special.

Fifth Gear overall car ratings

STYLING

With all the different colour options available it's hard not to find a DS3 to suit your taste. It's a great looking car with clean lines and stylish features including daytime running lights which add a welcome bit of 'bling' to the front end.

HANDLING

The DS3 is agile enough and a slick gear shift and well-weighted steering makes it fun to drive. There's not a lot of body roll which gives the driver confidence.

COMFORT

Sculpted, supportive seats and a roomy interior are real plus points in the DS3. The ride is a little on the stiff side, but it's not harsh and cushions larger bumps and potholes well. Citroen has put a lot of focus on sound proofing too, and aside from a little road noise on larger 17-inch wheels, there's not too much extraneous noise through to the cabin.

QUALITY & RELIABILITY

This is meant to be a premium car, and Citroen has spent a lot of time ensuring the fit and finish is of high quality. The cabin feels solid and is finely detailed - even down to the neat contrast stitching on the door trim.

PERFORMANCE

The pick of the range is the zippy THP150 petrol engine, which is also found in the DS3's rival, the Mini Cooper S. While it's not staggeringly quick, it is fast enough to be fun and offers decent shove throughout the rev range. If economy is on your mind though, the 110bhp 1.6-litre HDi is also a decent choice.

ROOMINESS

From the outside, you might not expect the DS3 to offer much in the way of rear space, but it will swallow up two adults with relative ease. Citroen claims the middle seat will fit a third, but certainly not in any comfort. And there's even a 285-litre boot as well.

STEREO / SAT NAV

The stereo is the same unit found in the C3 which sounds good and is easy to use and navigate and includes MP3 connectivity and USB. Citroens full-colour screen 'My Way' Sat Nav is available as an option.

RUNNING COSTS

All engines offer decent fuel economy. The most frugal will be the low CO2 version which not only qualifies for a free tax disc with 99g/km but returns a claimed 74mpg. Insurance should be reasonable too with all models ranging from group 12E to 22E (with the new 1-50 insurance groups).

VALUE FOR MONEY

How far you go to customise your DS3 will ultimately determine how much your car costs. The engine choice sets the base price of your car, followed by how many options you tick after that. Basic prices look reasonable, undercutting the Mini, but it's worth bearing in mind that a range-topping THP 150 fully kitted out will set you back around £19k. That said the individuality of each one - providing it's been tastefully specified - should secure the DS3 a good resale value.

ENVIRONMENT

The DS3 range offers a low CO2 model boasting just 99g/km CO2, while all diesels come under 120g/km. Petrol engines are broadly competitive.

I have been lucky enough to drive a few of these now, not yet launched but they are in the showrooms. A super car, like the mini should of been. The THP150 has a 0-60 of 7.3secs and it feels good, like a quality version of the old Renault 5 GTturbo. The 120VTi 1.6 is also a great drive. Drop your preconceptions, go and drive one, you wont regret it.

Without doubt a futuristic car...I am confident it will outclass mini and all rivals !!!. Well done Citroen i think your onto a winner with this one !!!. It ticks all the boxes on style, comfort and performance. I test drove the 1.6 vti 120ps which has ample of mid range power but for me a little slugish on acceleration as i own a mazda RX8 so iv'e gone for the 1.6 THP 150ps. All that's left to say is i can't wait to recieve mine. You wont be dissapointed get yourselves down the showrooms & book a test drive NOW !!!.

WOW! I have been looking for a car for a while and nothing took my fancy untill i found this.I must admit i was not a citroen fan but this car has changed my mind i simply love the way it looks, and the drive reminds me of the 1.9 205 gti.great, great car i cannot wait for mine to arrive. This car will be a legend. I tested the mini and megane coupe the mini is smaller and seems dated. The megane is bigger on the outside but seemed cramped in the rear, also visibility was poor as were interior materials. All in all its a no brainer the new must have small car has arrived.

The Ciroen Ds3 sounds perfect. We want a stylish small car for town and country within 3 hours driving. The snag is that my wife insists on an automatic transmission and this limits my choice. Do you think that Ciroen have the intention to produce a Ds3 with automatic??

As a driving instructor I have had 2 C3s both were great cars.I was going to buy a new one until I saw a picture of the new DS3 and decided to wait. I test drove 2 DS3s last week both petrol 120&150hp, both drove well, quiet and refined with plenty of power. I have ordered a Dstyle 99g and can't wait for delivery in May hopefully!

Wife has a C4, oldest son has a C2, I drive a Despatch, youngest son drives a Fabia VTs. We have orders 2 of the 150bhp's. Black one for youngest (he's paying) and Pearl Red for the wife. Bit small for my ladders so I'll stick with the Despatch. Great car, really impressed on the test drive. We all now drive Citreon's, think I'll have to support the French at rugby as well.

I test drove the DS3 on 26 feb and absolutly loved it and brought one that very same day. It is the best hot hatch on the market at the moment and it is going to be one tough cookie to beat. Mini as got a real contender and its got a massive challenge to match it or go one better. Citroen has created an amazing car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Picked my 1.6 THP 150 DSport on Thursday 4th March, all I can say is wow. I used to work for citroen and I've never seen one so well finished, the leather interior is a great touch and really finishes this off well. The acceleration definitely brings a smile to your face and the handling is superb, I looked at everything in the class and this was the only car that made want to hand over a large chunk of cash and boy I'm glad I made that decision. Yes the mpg around town isn;t going to be great but with a turbo charged engine I wasn;t expecting it to be. I'm one very happy Citroen customer and can't wait to take it on a long drive!

i've test driven the DS3 twice from 2 citroen dealers. it handles better than the C3 and overall is better in terms of exterior and interior looks. I was that close to getting an alfa mito but the sales person was so rude, even before we had discussed prices, and given that there is only about 1 or 2 alfa dealers in london, I decided that I couldn't risk buying an alfa and having to deal with them again, so I shifted my focus to the DS3 which I initially considered above my range. before all this, I'd already driven the C3, which is roomy, but boring to drive. after my 2 DS3 test drives and managing to configure one to my price range £13k, I decided to order it. the ds3 feels really agile to drive, u just get the feeling that u want to go on the motorway, and the interior is really cosy and compact. i still do not know why people compare it to the mini because I think it slightly looks more like a golf from the outside, and the inside is cosier that the mini, but that's just my view. my advice to potential DS3 buyers in london is that you should try the different dealers available, you'd be surprised they are slightly different from each other in what they offer and you may just be able to get some little discount from one of them, like I did. Customer service from citroen, I'd say so far, has been really good, compared to the alfa mito guy. i give the citroen a 4star simply bc I know its not a perfect car, there has to be something wrong with it somewhere. i think the steering should have been about 8.5% stiffer, but that's just me.

The car is absolutely awesome. got a great deal on a 150 Dsport, test drove it twice and loved it. The acceleration is so smooth and i'm very impressed by the boot space and the rear passenger space. I pick mine up on moday 15th and i honestly can't wait. I'v gone for sport red with back roof and wheels, should look the business i think. There aint another car on the market that can do the 0-60 that this does and is still as cheap to insure and tax.

My wife and I were looking for a new car something family and country friendly like a Qashquai when we happened to walk by a Citreon showroom and there in the middle was a red and white ds3 with white 17inch alloys. Love at first sight. It's now ours and we are waiting to pick it up in ten days. I didn't get to personalise it but as it was a showroom model, we got a bit of a discount. As for our 11 and 13 year old kids..... I'm working on that.

Love it! Test drove the DStyle 1.6 petrol today. Hadn't even considered Citroen til I saw this and fell in love with it! Bit pricier than we were looking for but really, whats not to like? The styling is superb, sets it apart form other small hatches, and it handles well - feels well-anchored to the road. Just praying that my hubbie will be like the man fron Delmonte and say 'YES'!!!

Test drove the 90BHP with 74 mpg! loved the car and have placed and order for one. Delivery due June time. Citroen are only buliding 5000 cars this year to retain residual value so people, get your orders in quick or you lose out this year!. Dealers are not offering discounts as such on the cars. your best bet to save is on the finance. pcp is a good way to go. Enjoy, be safe and happy driving your new DS3 baby!

wow wow wow!!!! What a car!!!! Just got my DS3 today. I bought the white DS3 with black and red alloys and chrome trim. Also have lush red leather seats!! I had a mini for three years and did not think any car could beat my mini, but the DS3 beats it, certainly on the stylish front, hands down. Showrooms will not budge much on price as there is long waiting lists so do not go in thinking you are going to be able to haggle much off the price. I would never have bought a white car and originally went into the showroom to order a black one, but they had a white one on show with all the extras and it looked lush and i am proud to say it is now my new baby!!! If you want a stylish car that is lush to drive and doesnt break the bank the DS3 is for you. Happy driving x

On 15th Feb. I had a 'short list' for my new car, including Abarth, Alfas, Mitsubishi Ralliart, etc. After reading the reviews I test drove a DS3 early March. Visited 3 dealers in order to get the best part-ex on my X type Jag. Two only offered £3,350/£3,500 but at the the 3rd I eventually got the £4,000 minimum I wanted, so I was able to order the DS3 Sport of my choice (Grey with Carmen red roof) on 15th March. The dealer pulled out all the stops to get one, he found one in stock with another dealer and I took delivery on 31st March. That was 48 hours ago and I haven't stopped smiling since, yes even in my sleep, when I think of how much I am enjoying driving my new toy. You may be lucky, like me, and get yours in 15 days but if not be prepared to wait, I promise you it will be worth it. A joy to drive. The overall acceleration of the 1.6 petrol engine, beats my 2.5 AWD Jag!

Hello, I am a new owner of Citroen C3 Picasso, so forgive me for addressing owners or owners-to be of DS3. I just couldn´t help myself - I read the comments and I am so glad there are others that love their car! I had a Xsara, a C4 and fell in love with C3 Picasso. Haven´t found anything that spoils my fun with the car and love the moment when getting ready to drive :) I think Citroen is doing great work on it´s cars nowadays. So, all the best to everyone!

I am lucky enough to have owned quite a few new cars in the last few years, the last three being from Citroen. Each one of these was capable, well specified, well priced and reliable. I read the magazines so knew the DS3 was coming, and as soon as the dealer had a demonstrator, I drove it. And that was that, I just had to order one. There was a long wait, of 14 weeks, but all in the interest of maintaining residuals i"m told. Was it worth the wait? Oh yes! My car is a DSport 150, in Sport Red with white roof and mirrors, and black wheels. It has the red interior trim too, and looks amazing. I have owned lots of cars, but this is the first that people have stopped and looked and said how nice. It may have come to the sector late, but Citroen have done the job properly. The car is small, but not too small. It has a proper boot unlike the opposition. It corners and handles beautifully, but not at the expense of ride comfort, like the opposition. It also has well styled, supportive and very comfortable seats in s spacious interior. It has a great dashboard too, very clear and with all controls to hand. It all feels very grown up, but still has a wicked glint in its eye. The turbo petrol engine is a gem, turbine smooth and very powerful. What with congestion on our roads, the cost of fuel, speed cameras etc, motoring to me had become much less of a pleasure than previously, so I am delighted just to want to drive again. I have covered just 500 miles since taking delivery, but on all types of roads from motorways to country lanes. It is simply a pleasure wherever it is, and it must be mentioned that at sensible speeds, well in excess of 40 mpg appears on the trip computer. So, is it perfect? Well, if it had the EGS paddle/clutchless gearchange, available elsewhere.in the range for me it would be, excellent as the 6 speed manual gearbox is. Apart from lack of cup holder that is. So, potential supermini buyers, save your time and call at your local dealer and place your order for a fantastic Citroen DS3.

I love the looks, but I would probably have a mini for that price. The ds3racing is a looker+sporty+cheap=brilliant. If mini put some more go faster stripes and some more air intakes and bigger spoiler and bucket seats on to the jcw . In that case I would prefer the jcw to the ds3 racing.

I have just bought a Citroen DS3 1.6Hdi 90hp and I can honestly say that it is quite simply the best car that I have ever owned. It makes such a refreshing change to invest in a car that has clearly been cleverly designed and well thought out. I have always wanted a car with concept design good looks, good performance, low emissions and industry leading fuel consumption (70.6mpg). If you want to save the planet and get from A to B with a smile on your face then I would have no hesitation in recommending this car to my friends and family.

Got my DS3 VTi 120hp today and I can safely say its a superb car. Handles well and has enough umph to satisfy my occasional want to release a bit of stress on the lanes. Enough space to fit 4 and baggage in the back is also a big plus! My 17" white alloys are just awesome and can't believe the heads that turn as I drive by. Thankyou Citroen for designing a fresh affordable design and engine. Me likes! A HAPPY CUSTOMER

Im so excited to find some kindered spirits. I too am utterly in love with this car. I collected mine two days ago after a 3 month wait and it was so worth it. Its the dstyle 1.6 hdi in thorium grey and white roof. I upgraded a few things, added connect pack and had the front grille done in chrome to match the mirrors and side strips. It looks awesome and drives superb. I am totally totally smitten. Theres not a small hatch on the market to rival it and after checking out other new models like the mazda2, the swift, the mini and countless others the ds3 just blew me away. And now I cant stop peeking through the curtains cos seeing it on my drive almost as much fun as driving it. Cant wait to pull it into the works car park on monday.. Oh yes, im buzzing just thinking about it.

The only disadvantage allbeit a small one is that the ds3 only comes with 3 doors. I have two dogs who travel in the boot so shopping etc has to go on the back seat( much easier with 5 doors)

Bought a yellow and black 1.6 HDI Dsport last sunday and taking delivery on tues, can't wait. Originally wanted white/black but was told of up to 22 week wait. They had showroom model in yellow/black with full leather and all electrics plus sat/nav so bit the bullet and paid a couple of grand more than I wanted but it looks and drives like a dream, so I'll just have to work a bit harder to pay for. I'm using it for driving lessons so hope my pupils like it and hope I don't get any vegans wanting lessons.

I own the 120VTi 1.6 version and it is a fantastic car with all the great points listed in the reviews, it is very fun to drive and is a real head turner. The only thing anoying about the car when driving it is the pedals are too close together, it is unneccesary to have them so close to each other and when putting the clutch down to change gear it often snags the brake pedal making the car jerk. It is made especially hard if you have big feet like me :-) The automatic gear box is also too expensive at an extra £1000! It seems like abit of an after thought however this is a great car and not enough to bring the car down from a 5 star rating!

We have just bought a DS3 White (Special Edition) 1.6 HDI 90 - in base spec with no additional options and it is simply gorgeous. The special editions seem to be based on the Sport spec. As the White misses out on the normally extra cost option of metallic paint of the Black edition it gets Sport seats trimmed with Alcantara inserts and the drilled pedals too. The steering is amazingly quick, accurate and the handling superb, it's amazing fun to drive, well equipped and the standard stereo solid and warm - with less than 200 miles on the clock the fuel economy is hovering around 50mpg in town. When we were researching which DS3 to buy (March 2011) - it seems that the DS3 White/Black special editions have the best residual values in the Citroen dealers finance system - car for car the White was cheaper than the Design & DStyle.

I was lucky enough to find a dealer who had a 1.6Hdi Black edition in stock which avoided the normal three months wait. It has the "go where it is pointed" feel of the original Issigonis Mini and is a truer successor to the latter than the Teutonic "Tubby" which bears its name. Like the old Mini, the interior seems improbably large in relation to its exterior but it rides much better than either of the others. The special addition's white stripes along the roof added nothing I felt, so the garage removed them for me. It shows how even a special edition cdan be customised!

Just taken delivery of my 110Hdi Dsport (signature pack) and very pleased with cheeky looks, cosy interior (feels like a much bigger car on the inside than the outside suggests) and great specification. Turning out 56+ MPG without effort and every trip puts a smile on your face. Fits on the drive much easier than my previous Mazda 6 Sport. Bug bears - armrest interferes with handbrake, end up sitting in an upright position to reach steering wheel without the pedals being too close and the left footrest is difficult to use in comfort.

Ive chosen sport red with onyx black roof and blacked alloys and wing mirrors with most of the accessiories and boy it will look just mint,my should be ready straight from factory to dealership 6-8 weeks and i can not wait its just going to turn heads, the mpg is so frugal its incredible and my self i prefer diesel engines,0-60 good and top end good,im not a boy racer im 40 in november but the first time i saw this car i was saying i want one of them...heres to joining the ds3 club ;) mark manchester.

As an addendum to my previous comment, a recent visit to France revealed the DS3 to provoke just as much interest in bystanders, perhaps more, as at home. On the lightly trafficked but well maintained, roads in the Cotentin enormous fun can be had without infringing traffic laws, making the tyres squeal or other boy racer things! This vehicle is more a revival of the fine French grand routier tradition than a counterpart to the more hair shirted creations of other countries. Such cars were always able to stand up to their "sports" brethren and see them off at times. Just witness the "shootout" on Fifth Gear between the DS3 and the Mito.

Having ordered our DS3 1600hdi (99) grm full loaded with extras was very disappionted to be told a 16 week delivery (may 2010) and then arrived 2 weeks late but god was it worth it .It has been without doubt the best car we have ever owned stunning looks very comfortable and superb m.p.g this has averaged a 58mpg week after week and that is a true mpg not quoted mpg .It has been ultra reliable no vaults at all and is very well built no rattles and turns heads where ever you go the sat nav is easy to use and accurate and the bluetooth facility going through the stereo is crystal clear .I have owned many so called prestige cars over the years and not one has come close to this car WELL DONE CITROEN .I will be ordering a new one in the next couple of months and that will be a 1st for me as I have never ever ordered the same car before .If I have any fault with the car I would have to say I wish the back seats when down folded flat other than that nothing else at all but would love to see it come with L.E.D. back light cluster to as I think it would really finish the look of the car off .
