Fifth Gear Volkswagen Golf review

1. Superior build quality
2. Refined and smooth ride
3. Effortless to drive

WE DON'T LIKE

1. Top end models are a little pricey
2. Not the most dynamic car in its class
3. Nothing else

At first glance it may be difficult to tell the difference between this new Golf and its predecessor. It's the same size car as before so there's no extra legroom or space in the boot, but then this was never a problem in the previous car anyway. The facelift has given the Golf much sharper looks though, as it takes on some of the design features from the Scirocco. Inside, the Golf benefits from an updated dashboard and additional soft-touch materials around the cabin, and although there are few obvious changes, the build quality is superb. Volkswagen has gone to exceptional lengths to improve the Golf's soundproofing by fitting an additional layer in the windscreen and ultra aerodynamic wing mirrors to ensure the mk6 Golf is quieter than ever. And it's noticeable too. The level of refinement is such that the Golf feels like a much larger car and certainly deserves a place towards the premium end of its class.

The Golf is an effortless car to drive, and feels composed and solid on the road. Bumps are handled with very little drama and the car's handling is competent - the chassis has remained largely unchanged from the mk5 Golf.

There is a wide and decent range of engines on offer from the entry-level 1.4-litre 4 cylinder petrol unit, up to the 2.0-litre TDI 140. The real peach of the range is the 1.4 TSI petrol engine - both turbocharged and supercharged - available in 122 and 160bhp variants. Both feel responsive and also brisk; the 122bhp version offers only slightly less performance than the TDI 140 and both 1.4 engines will return an impressive 45mpg. Ultimately it will depend on personal preference as to which engine fits the bill, but none will disappoint.

The only downside to the Golf is that with refinement and quality there is usually a price to pay, and certainly if you're looking for mid-spec equipment levels together with one of the higher powered TSI or TDI engines the premium can get quite steep. That said, CO2 is less than 150g/km on most models (bar the 1.6-litre petrol) so running costs should be pretty decent.

The Golf has always set the benchmark for quality and refinement and, as other brands have edged ever closer, Volkswagen appears to have moved the goalposts once more. The Golf isn't the most dynamic car in its class, but the ease of driving, and its ability to rack up mileage whilst providing the sort of comfort and refinement of a car in the class above, makes it very easy car to recommend.

Fifth Gear overall car ratings

STYLING

Volkswagen has been criticised for being too conservative with the new Golf which looks largely unchanged. Light clusters and the front grille benefit from Scirocco-esque styling which has sharpened up the looks slightly. But as the saying goes

HANDLING

The Golf is not the most dynamic car in its class, but it is still very competent. Sharp steering makes it fun as well as effortless to drive and the supple suspension gives the car good composure through corners.

COMFORT

Tweaks to the car's suspension have given the Golf a more supple ride and it handles bumps with little drama. Volkswagen has also been working to improve soundproofing in the cabin which now makes it one of the quietest in its class. There's a little wind noise still at motorway speeds, but nothing the stereo won't mask.

QUALITY & RELIABILITY

Volkswagen has always set the benchmark with the Golf in terms of quality and this car simply raises the bar further. High quality materials and soft touch plastics all around the cabin not only look good but should stand the test of time. Creaks and rattles are very unlikely and reliability is not usually an issue with VW's.

PERFORMANCE

There's a decent range of engines producing from 80bhp to 160bhp. Of the petrol units, the TSI 122 and TSI 160 both offer brisk and responsive performance with the TSI 160 capable of 0-60mph in 8 seconds. The 2.0-litre TDI is available in 110 and 140bhp, the latter having excellent low-down torque for quick overtaking and can hit 62mph in a pretty nippy 9.3 seconds.

ROOMINESS

The size of the Golf remains unchanged from the previous model, and as a result there's no extra leg or headroom and boot space is also the same. However, there was never a complaint with the amount of space before and, although the rear lends itself better to two rather than three adults, it's possible to sit a couple of six-footers in the back with little difficulty.

STEREO / SAT NAV

The standard radio/CD player is a competent bit of kit, particularly in SE specification which includes 8 speakers and an Aux port as standard. For the full beans though there's the optional DVD touch screen and navigation kit which really is state of the art in-car entertainment. A slightly cheaper option is the RCD 510, a touch screen radio system still, minus the sat nav.

RUNNING COSTS

The TSI units are surprisingly frugal, given their performance. Both offer 45mpg on the combined cycle whilst the diesel unit offers 57.6mpg (in both 110 and 140 versions). The maximum VED band across the range is H (under new VED bands from March 2009), although most models will fall into bands D, E and F costing £120-£125 per year.

VALUE FOR MONEY

The Golf isn't short on equipment and the mid spec SE gets 16-inch alloys, cruise control, radio/MP3 with 8 speakers, aux port, rain sensor and auto headlights. GT spec adds Alcantara seats, leather trimmed steering wheel and gear knob and 17-inch alloys. There is a bit of a steep price curve as you go up the model range but it does feel like you're getting your money's worth.

ENVIRONMENT

VW has worked hard to improve its engine range in recent years: it used to make some truly feeble power units. Now it majors on the state-of-the-art 1.4 petrol and a modern 2.0 litre diesel, both of which are amongst the least polluting motors in the class.

Just bought one and can confirm your review. It's certainly an exceptional car the engine and gears are superb. Drives like a far more expensive car. Truly value for money.

I've just bought a 1.6TDI SE Bluemotion Tech, and I too can confirm this is a great car. I plumped for this version for its fuel economy, and while I don't get as many mpg as VW promise, I still get around 66 mpg on my regular work commute (mixed urban/extra-urban conditions) and thirty quid of diesel gets me 290 miles. She's nippy enough too, and great to drive on the motorway, showing little effort at high speed - 90 mph requires only just over 2000rpm. I cannot recommend this car enough.

I have a GT 140 TDI 2.0 LITRE i purchased the £250 3 yrs service plan and have just booked it in for its first service and just found out that to do a full proper service i now have to pay another£40 + vat to have the engine flush and fuel lines flushed. I feel that this pay up front is not what it says on the tin ?

owned my golf for over a year now, and absolutely love it, its exceptional refinement is what would be expected from an executive saloon.. great at carrying the family around safely, and in comfort, and handles a joy too, excellent value for money, considering the equivalently speced focus is near enough the same price, but the golf has better running costs, less depreciation values, and, its a volkswagen, not, a ford.

Recently got a metallic grey MkVI TSI, but the catch is that it an export to Taiwan. You have no idea how good you guys have it in Europe. No options here for Keyless entry system, hidden reverse cam, parking assist, electric seats, electric folding side-mirrors, security motion sensor, or adaptive chasis control(ACC). We don't even get the 3-door option here. Oh, and the R-line options will cost a kidney. But for what I got I'm happy with it, the right balance between performance and practicality, handsome yet low-key, and there's no other car engine I would rather have.... other than the 2.0TFSI.

I also have a 1.4TSI DSG just filled up with liquid gold 41.5 mpg. Had a look on the VW website yesterday and it appears they have dropped the 2.0litre diesel in the hatchback still available in the estate.

Just bought the small 1.2TSI, quite pricey but worth it for build quality and reliability. As the earlier post says feels and drives like a bigger car almost as smooth as our E class merc (was sold on the ride quality alone). The interior materials are all soft touch even the side pockets and and slow opening glove box are lined with velour carpet, basically shouts quality. With regards to performance it is fine and nippy when it gets moving and fantastic on the motorway, but struggles to get off the mark at the lights. At 70mph It feels like it is going a lot slower. Corners better than I expected too. My only complaint is that for £16.7k with metallic paint VW should really give alloys (15" steel wheels with Bin lids). But overall I'm very happy with it especially 51.4mpg and £90 pa roadtax.

I am on my second, bought from new, Golf 1.9 TDI. The first was a bit disappointing when related to my expectations of a VW build. However, after three years I replaced it with the second new one, this time a Match variant. This one has been everything I wnated and expected from a Diesel Golf. Comfortable to journey in and locked into Cruise at 60mph, after a goodly few miles shows an avarage of around 60+mpg. Recently (38,000 miles mark) I have seen 63mpg on the calculator display. The point is that I have now ordered my third Golf and this will be a Match BlueMotion model. I am looking forward to it's delivery immensely, especially in the light of all the good feedback from other owners of such a car, featured on this website. I will place another review here upon experiencing driving of the new car, sometime subsequent to delivery. Yes, VW do seem to make some good machines!

Just ordered a new Golf 1.6tdi Match BMT and got 12% discount by shopping around. Ordered before 1st August so in reality got another 1% off! Best of all, as I can claim a fair part of my driving costs against tax, this car has all the bells & whistles, plus slips in under the 110g/km CO2 emmission band which means I can claim 100% of the purchase price against tax in the first year!!! (20% if >110g/km)

I recently bought a new Golf GTD. Superb car as long as you don't expect any support from VW when there is an issue to resolve. Maybe that philosophy only applies here in Australia.

My annoyance is the cabin noise. This is cause by thin glass; and if you don't keep an eye on your tyres - the back ones make a racket if there's even the slightest alignment problem. It sounds like a wheel bearing is on its way out. The other matter of concern is the poor stereo and speakers fitted as standard. Utterly dismal on a car in this price range. All in all, it's fast, comfortable (and I have a TDI with stiff suspension), very frugal and good road manners. The gearbox is well-matched to the engine and that diesel engine is very well designed and executed. I've done 60k (miles) since I got it and the only thing I changed was the oil and the usual servicing components.
