Renault MeganeFebruary 2009

Average.

A vastly improved interior and a sexy three door 'Coupe' version aren't quite enough to make up for this Megane's lifeless steering and the plain looks of the hatch.

Fifth Gear Renault Megane review

1. Quality interior
2. Coupe version looks stylish
3. Big boot

WE DON'T LIKE

1. Lifeless steering
2. Mediocre looking hatchback
3. LED speedometer looks tacky

A world away from the 'ass-shaking' previous model, Renault has adopted a much more conservative look for current generation. Whether that's a good or bad thing is down to personal taste, but certainly VW and Ford have gone for similarly safe approaches with fellow family hatchback rivals, the Golf and Focus.

This Megane's classy interior, however, is a vast improvement, adopting some elements from the bigger, plusher Laguna in terms of the dash and centre console layout. Our only criticism is the slightly cheap-looking LED digital speedometer which looks out of place next to the analogue rev-counter.

Generally, there's a perception of quality that wasn't evident in the previous Megane. We like the soft touch textiles, the chunkier doors and sculpted front seats. There's a decent amount of interior space too and legroom in the rear will be more than acceptable for most passengers. The boot is one of the largest in its class with 405 litres of space, making it perfect for the weekly 'big shop'.

On the road the Megane is a competent and relaxing car to drive and, as a result, motorway miles slip away without fuss. A strong range of engines are on offer, but our pick of the bunch is the smooth and frugal 1.5 DCi 106 bhp diesel, which returns 62.8mpg and pumps out a mere 120g/km CO2.

While the Megane offers compliant and safe handling, it never feels particularly engaging. The brakes are progressive and manual gear change pleasant to use, but the steering is too light and numb, which can make the driver feel detached from the car.

On one hand some buyers will appreciate this effortless and relaxing aspect of the Megane's character, but enthusiasts looking for an engaging and energetic drive will be disappointed.

The Megane is available in two hatchback bodystyles: the inconspicuous five-door and the much sleeker, sexier Megane Coupe (which is essentially the three-door version). Renault is keen to differentiate the three-door as a model in its own right, so it's calling it the Coupe and has given it enticing looks that are much more impressive than the hatchback's.

The Megane Coupe is lower and more aggressive, with a sloping roofline and highlighted intakes at the front. But despite the dynamic styling, boot space is still on a par with the Focus hatch (385 litres) and you can get two adults in the rear easily. It is actually more expensive than the five-door hatchback, but the added visual appeal could justify the premium.

Fifth Gear overall car ratings

STYLING

The previous Megane - the one with the bum - was a little controversial, and this version is a little conservative. Its not unattractive, certainly it looks decent from the rear, but the front-end could have been a bit more adventurous. Thankfully the three-door Megane Coupe seems to fill the gap between the two.

HANDLING

Sadly the way the Megane handles equates to the way the hatch looks - dull. It is competent and safe; there's plenty of grip and cornering is smooth, but lifeless steering makes the whole experience a bit lacklustre.

COMFORT

The Megane's ride can feel busy at times over larger bumps and potholes, but on the whole it is fairly compliant and the front seats offer good support. The engine can be noisy when it's cold, but wind and road noise are only really audible at motorway speeds.

QUALITY & RELIABILITY

The interior is vastly improved from the previous Megane with soft-touch materials and a classy looking dash and centre console. It also feels better built, with no squeaks and rattles on the examples we've tried.

PERFORMANCE

The quickest of the bunch is the 2.0-litre TCE 180 engine which gets the car to 62mph in just over 8 seconds. But most will choose to avoid the 178g/km CO2 that comes with it. For more economical power, the 130 DCi engine offers decent acceleration - around 9.5 seconds - and plenty of low-down pulling power for swift over-taking.

ROOMINESS

There's a decent amount of head and elbow room in the rear of the Megane hatchback whilst legroom is easily on a par with the rest of the segment. Boot space is excellent. The Coupe offers less luggage room, but even this is still on a par with the Ford Focus.

STEREO / SAT NAV

The speaker system in the Megane is good and it comes with a basic radio and CD player as standard. Dynamique models can be specified with Arkamys 3D Sound audio and sat nav, with full colour screen and Bluetooth, but it will set you back around £1500.

RUNNING COSTS

All of the engines - bar the DCi 86 - have a service interval of 18k which should keep costs down, while the range of diesel engines return between 55.4mpg and 62.8mpg.

VALUE FOR MONEY

All models come with a decent amount of equipment and the Megane is certainly a cheaper option than some of its rivals. Mid-spec Dynamique trim gets you 16-inch alloy wheels, auto headlights and windscreen wipers plus cruise control for a reasonable price.

ENVIRONMENT

An average performer, with the 1.5 diesels under 120 g/km of CO2. However, there is no "green special" as yet with sub 100g/km of CO2.
