But only if you're a fan of the Touareg's conspicuous strengths. Refinement, comfort and quality make the car a worthy successor to the original model, but the all-new Touareg ultimately fails to threaten the class leaders.

Long before Porsche and Volkswagen became embroiled in a bewildering fight for the ownership rights to each other's brand, the manufacturers proved they could work together very effectively by co-developing an all-new SUV platform.

For Porsche this would underpin the Cayenne - a controversial, love-it-or-hate-it car which tore up the company's rulebook on its way to becoming a sales phenomenon - but VW's Touareg SUV was a much quieter success. The original was solidly good-looking, refined, unremarkable to drive, comfortable and surprisingly confident off-road and Volkswagen has sold half a million of them since 2003, but the car has often been overshadowed by its glamorous twin and the dynamically superior BMW X5.

The new Touareg aims to change all that. Volkswagen revealed the SUV at Geneva with the assurance that the new model would be lighter, better-looking, bigger, better to drive, more refined, more economical and quicker than the outgoing car. As well as sharing a new platform with the latest Cayenne, the Touareg also gets the same petrol-hybrid system that Porsche recently trumpeted as concrete evidence of their burgeoning green credentials. All of this looks very impressive on paper, and the new Touareg makes a good first impression in the metal too.

The car is 40mm longer than its predecessor, as well as being a smidgen lower, but from the outside it could very easily be mistaken for a mid-life facelift rather than a new model. This is not necessarily a criticism - VW's sharp new corporate nose fits the SUV very well, and the Touareg's previously well-proportioned body gets the added definition it needed to survive another half decade on the dealership forecourt.

The car's understated good looks continue on the inside. Some might consider VW's a little too staid, but the vast majority of the Touareg's intended audience are likely to appreciate the clean lines and sheer ergonomic precision of the cabin. Thanks to the longer wheelbase, there is plenty of legroom in the back and a decent boot behind that. Dark interiors mean the Touareg doesn't immediately seem that spacious considering its size, but premium materials and a beautiful finish do make it feel satisfyingly snug.

This impression of comfort is accentuated by the way the Touareg drives. The car doesn't have the kerb and cats eye conquering ability of a Discovery, but the ride quality is supple enough to smooth the average road's ruffled brow, and even the slight vibrations at slow speeds don't dramatically impair the big VW's sense of refinement.

Most potential owners will be satisfied with the Touareg's soporific handling, too. The car has shed 200kg in weight over its predecessor; there's still little dynamic sparkle to enjoy, but the SUV does waft around in composed fashion so long as you don't expect too much from the anaesthetized steering.

Endowed with the 375bhp hybrid system, the Touareg feels genuinely quick, although the 3.3-litre supercharged V6 petrol engine does need to work up a noisy head of steam before delivering peak performance. The switch from electric propulsion to conventional power is fairly seamless, which is fortunate because the Touareg will spark the V6 into life at walking pace. Predictably, the car's emissions-free range is severely limited. Slightly more impressive is the system's ability to disengage the petrol motor from the drivetrain at speed, allowing the Touareg to coast without enduring the detrimental effects of engine braking on fuel consumption.

Nevertheless, the hybrid system's environmental and economical benefits are negligible. CO2 emissions of 193g/km keep it in gas guzzler territory, and the car's speculative 34mpg economy figure is trumped by the 3.0-litre V6 TDI's quoted 38mpg.

The smaller diesel is the cheapest engine in the Touareg range, and will almost certainly be the big seller. This is no bad thing; twinned with VW's slick new eight-speed automatic gearbox the V6 TDI delivers 235bhp and 405 lb ft of torque. It may lack the comprehensive shove of the range-topping V8 TDI but it rarely leaves you wanting for more performance.

All versions of the Touareg get permanent four-wheel drive, but as most will never face anything more challenging than a muddy field, VW has toned down the car's standard setup. Every variant gets the basic 4MOTION system which includes a limited-slip Torsen differential and an off-road driving programme, but if you require serious ability in the sticky stuff you'll need to spec the 'Terrain Tech' package or buy the imaginatively titled Escape model. The extra money buys a centre locking differential, reduction gearing, increased ground clearance and idiot-proof dials to control it all from the cabin.

Basic off-road ability aside, the Touareg is a worthy successor to the original car. It doesn't possess the pomp of a Land Rover, and the X5 is still more rewarding to drive, but the Volkswagen's likely price tag will reflect this. There is the sneaking suspicion that the manufacturer might not have done quite enough to attract new customers to part with their cash in a closely fought class, but by improving the overall refinement, comfort, size, economy and pace of the car, Volkswagen has done more than enough to satisfy current Touareg fans.

STYLING

The original Touareg's understated good looks have been neatly sharpened by the addition of Volkswagen?s current corporate nose. The car?s handsome, Germanic interior doesn't spring any surprises, but its ergonomic precision and beautiful finish is likely to satisfy most potential buyers.

HANDLING

The new Touareg has shed an impressive 200kg over its predecessor, but don't expect that to have transformed the car's handling. Despite general competence and well-controlled body roll, Volkswagen's SUV is still lacking its competitor's dynamism. The slight feeling of detachment is offset by decent refinement though, and that will be enough for the Touareg's core buyer.

COMFORT

The Touareg is certainly comfortable. Presented with a decent stretch of tarmac, the car will waft around with some panache. Force it to negotiate a rutted road at slow speeds and bumps will bustle their way into the cabin, but the ride quality is never less than satisfactory.

QUALITY & RELIABILITY

Volkswagen's finish it normally very high in quality, and it's no different in the Touareg. The faux wood trim should be avoided, but otherwise the car's interior is an attractive mix of premium materials and conservative styling. Refinement on the road is also towards the top of the class.

PERFORMANCE

The Touareg's gutsy engine line-up means the SUV never feels slow. The 3.0-litre V6 TDI will be the bestseller for price reasons, but it also offers the most convincing mix of economy and performance. The all-new 4.2-litre V8 TDI is quick and refined, but painfully thirsty if driven hard. The hybrid seamlessly blends its power sources, but the eco-benefits are largely illusory and the petrol engine lacks the low down grunt of the diesels.

ROOMINESS

The new Touareg has swelled slightly and this does increase legroom in the rear. The boot is big enough, but there's still no option for a third row of seats. Put the rear seats down and load space expands to a convenient 1642 litres.

STEREO / SAT NAV

The Touareg's twelve speaker Dynaudio system is very good, as is Volkswagen's polished sat-nav. Both come as standard in all trim levels.

RUNNING COSTS

The entry-level V6 TDI is the most economic engine, returning a quoted 38mpg against the hybrid's 34mpg. Volkswagen claims the V8 TDI will return 31mpg, but in our experience you'd need to drive with the patience of a saint to achieve that. No version will prove cheap when it comes to taxation, although the hybrid will be exempt from the London congestion charge.

VALUE FOR MONEY

The Touareg's prices aren't confirmed yet, but the car is likely to be significantly cheaper than its premium rivals. This will make the car attractive to those hunting for the SUV's enviable levels of comfort and refinement, but the top-spec Ford Kuga does lurk ominously beneath the Touareg's prospective price tag.

ENVIRONMENT

The Mark Two model is a big improvement on its predecessor, but no models are yet below 190 g/km of CO2.

I have (two weeks ago) traded in my 07 V6 TDI SE Touareg for the New V6 TDI SE Bluemotion. The new model is a great leap forward. The ride and handling are much improved and accelertion is GTI beating. The 8 speed auto is smooth and swift. The standard tech is great and I have now got my whole CD collection on a single SD card to listen to while driving. The improved rear leg room is greatly appreciated by my children as is the standard DVD player. I don't need 7 seats, and I think the VW image is much more appropriate than its competitors in these 'hard' times. I always smile when I pass a Cayenne as we are in the same car but I saved myself many £1,000s over them!

Great SUV. 4.2 V8 is fantastic. Shame that it doesn't have the 4XMotion of the escape.
