Land Rover Range RoverJuly 2009

Highly recommended.

A world-beating luxury car by any measure - and now with more economical engines and first-class equipment.

Fifth Gear Land Rover Range Rover review

1. Brilliant engines
2. Luxurious and well-equipped interior
3. Sure-footed driving dynamics

WE DON'T LIKE

1. High price
2. That's it

This is the latest Range Rover - and it's one of the finest luxury cars money can buy. Although it looks only subtly different to the last, highly successful model - the front and rear have been revised - beneath the surface Land Rover has successfully developed all the best bits we've come to expect from its flagship model.

There's an impressive array of new equipment, including virtual TFT screens that display the dials and more, a class-topping multimedia system and a plethora of cameras to help with parking and off-road manoeuvring.

But there's more here than just a few new gizmos. The latest Range Rover is more comfortable than a Fatboy beanbag, more luxurious than a sheikh's suite and, crucially, its world-beating range of engines make it better to live with (and drive) than any other luxury 4x4 on the market.

Of course, the big challenge has been trying to improve the Range Rover's profligate image - a process made easier by the development of the TDV8. This model's sumptuous 3.6-litre diesel engine was upgraded in 2010 to provide an immense 309 bhp but, more importantly, a fuel economy improvement of 20%. It is now capable of blending 30mpg fuel economy with the urge to propel this heavyweight to 62mph from a standing start in 7.5 seconds.

But the green lobby can only be appeased so far: this is, after all, a large, luxury off-roader and Land Rover is pleasingly unapologetic about its place in the world. So the range-topping 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol version is still a thumpingly opulent express of a car and, despite being 29% more powerful than the V8 it replaces, it's also 7.4% more economical.

This flagship model comes in fully-loaded Autobiography spec and wears a consequently high price tag (which will ensure Land Rover sells relatively few) but lucky owners will be driving one of the finest examples of automotive engineering and craftsmanship currently on the market.

Most buyers will undoubtedly opt for the TDV8 model, whose suitably smooth and clean revving character, lower running costs and abundance of power make it a class-leading choice.

Fifth Gear overall car ratings

STYLING

There's no need to change a winning formula, so Land Rover has been careful to minimise the visual adjustments. Subtle tweaks to the front bumper and lights have been made in an effort to reduce the impression of size and give cleaner lines.

HANDLING

The Range Rover handles with unexpected aplomb, with less body roll and than ever before and deft steering to give a very sure-footed feel. That's important when the engines produce enough power to have the car travelling towards corners at quite a pace.

COMFORT

One of the finest cars to spend long periods of time in, the Range Rover has higher-quality textiles than before and is as spacious inside as ever. Its ride is also exceptionally smooth, while wind noise is kept pleasingly low, despite the bluff-nosed shape.

QUALITY & RELIABILITY

The fixtures and fittings on our test car appeared first class in every way. However, given Land Rover's track record for electrical problems, the amount of equipment on board might be cause for concern.

PERFORMANCE

Being propelled forward by the new 503bhp supercharged V8 is really something to experience. But even the torque of the V8 diesel offers more than enough urge for most users, dispatching the 0-62mph sprint in an impressive 8.6 seconds.

ROOMINESS

The Range Rover's spacious interior has long been one of its strongest assets. All the usual practical touches remain, with the split rear tailgate proving as useful as ever.

STEREO / SAT NAV

There's much more here than a stereo and a sat nav (although the Range Rover has good examples of both). Rear screens, cameras, TFT displays - this car has everything you'll ever need and more.

RUNNING COSTS

It's still an expensive car to run but, relative to other large luxury SUVs and the previous-generation model, there are savings in terms of fuel economy to be had from the diesel.

VALUE FOR MONEY

As it's one of the best luxury cars you can buy in any class - and we include £100K-plus Bentleys here - the Range Rover seems like excellent value for money. That doesn't change the fact that top-whack models are £80k and will depreciate fast.

ENVIRONMENT

It's not the most environmentally sensitive car ever launched - even the TDV8's 253g/km CO2 is tricky to defend - but it can turn 30mpg in town if you're gentle. Best not talk about the supercharged V8 model here...
