Hyundai ix35February 2010

Recommended.

Good looking, well equipped and cheap, the ix35 looks set to continue the success Hyundai has enjoyed with smaller cars. Make sure you pick the right engine though.

Fifth Gear Hyundai ix35 review

1. Tremendous value for money
2. A low-emitting 4x4
3. The high level of standard kit

WE DON'T LIKE

1. The woeful petrol engine
2. Interior trim feels cheap in places
3. The styling is not particularly unique

Hyundai is in the process of casting off its reputation for building cheap and cheerful cars, and the ix35 is the latest in a growing line of impressive and well-specified models.

It's described as a crossover - essentially a small off-roader - and is based on the platform of the highly successful i30 hatchback. As a result it would make sense to consider the ix35 a rival for the likes of the Ford Kuga and the Nissan Qashqai. But Hyundai would like us to think otherwise and reckon it is a genuine rival for smaller hatchbacks such as the Ford Focus.

By pricing the ix35 competitively and filling it with huge amounts of standard kit, it does make a lot of sense. There are just two trim levels on offer - Style and Premium - and even the entry-level car comes with lots included in the purchase price. You get 17-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth, rear parking sensors, downhill brake control and iPod connectivity. You even get heated seats in the back as well as the front. The Premium trim adds £1,750 to the price, but brings kit like cruise control, a sunroof, keyless entry and auto lights and wipers.

So the ix35 is well-equipped, but this would mean very little if the car drove appallingly, which thankfully it doesn't. It holds the road admirably well for a car of its height and the ride is firm without being uncomfortably jarring. However, the crucial element is the choice of engine. The car comes with two from launch - a 2.0-litre diesel with 134bhp and a 161bhp 2.0-litre petrol. The diesel is far superior to the petrol and will deservedly account for the majority of sales. It gets to 62mph in 9.4 seconds and 236 lb ft of pulling power means it responds happily to any request for acceleration.

The diesel comes with the choice of two- or four-wheel drive, and remarkably there is barely any difference between the two in terms of economy and emissions. In basic Style trim, the 2WD version manages 51.4mpg and emits 147g/km, while the 4WD is just behind with 49.6mpg and 149g/km CO2. With just £1,000 difference in price between the two, it makes as much sense to go for the all-wheel drive option. It feels slightly more planted on the road, with the front-drive option feeling a little more uncertain through corners.

The 2.0-litre petrol is best avoided, and is unlikely to even be on offer for that long according to sources at Hyundai. It is an engine that needs a lot more revving, and yet never really delivers with much in the way of performance. Not only is it slower to 62mph than the diesel at 10.4 seconds, but it lacks any sort of urgency. When depressing the accelerator you are left waiting for a kick of power that sadly never arrives.

But pick the right engine - a smaller diesel and petrol are due to join the range later - and the ix35 makes a very compelling choice. It is a credible alternative to more expensive equivalents to the likes of the Ford Kuga, and may well even go so far as to be an alternative to smaller hatchbacks like the Focus or i30.

Fifth Gear overall car ratings

STYLING

The ix35 is good looking, but is nothing groundbreaking - it follows the Ford Kuga's chunky styling even down to the creases down to the bonnet.

HANDLING

The steering is responsive and smooth on the ix35, but a car of this size is always going to feel a little uncomfortable through corners. The four-wheel option helps it feel a little more secure on the road.

COMFORT

Seats in the ix35 are firm and supportive, and are heated even down to the lowest trim level. The ride is also slightly firm to reduce body roll in the corners, but not so much to be jarring.

QUALITY & RELIABILITY

Hyundai is developing an improving reputation for reliability and this is backed up by a five year unlimited mileage warranty. The ix35 feels well put together, although our test car had developed an irritating rattle by the end of our drive.

PERFORMANCE

If you are after speed from your small off-roader then look elsewhere. But the 2.0-litre diesel still copes admirably under acceleration and is good for most overtaking manoeuvres. The petrol is less so and is best avoided.

ROOMINESS

The boot compares well with direct rivals such as the Ford Kuga and the Nissan Qashqai - it boasts 150 and 100 litres more capacity than the two respectively. Rear legroom is also good, even if visibility is not so good for back-seat passengers.

STEREO / SAT NAV

The stereo offers an ipod connection as standard, and is easy to use generally. Satnav is available as part of a Media option pack that also brings a reversing camera and an upgraded stereo so is not bad value for money.

RUNNING COSTS

This should be one of the ix35's trump cards. The diesel offers fuel economy up to a very decent 51.4mpg. Residual value experts are predicting figures that even Hyundai admitted were higher than it expected.

VALUE FOR MONEY

Packing the ix35 full of standard kit means it is remarkably good value for money. Even the entry level model gets toys such as Bluetooth and heated seats in the front and the rear. A small options list means it is not easy to add lots to the final price.

ENVIRONMENT

The 2WD version is one of the cleanest on sale with emissions below 140g/km. All manual transmission version are under 160 g/km of CO2.

The design direction that Hyundai have taken to develop this car is perfect and will be key to the success that im sure it will have. Reviews have already shown that the Hyundai ix35 can even perform rather than just "look good". I've been inside the car and its a modern styled sleek; almost futuristic design that appeals to a younger audience. I can't point a finger on many bad points given the ix35 price tag, Hyundai are just doing it all right at the moment!

Ordered a2.0 diesel at the end of may told delivery would be mid July so will wait for 61 reg sept1st. Ordered casa white premium with media pack which gives sat nav, colour reverse camera, 8 speaker stereo with amp & sub woofer. This is a cracking vehicle we can't wait why would you buy anything else ? A 5 year warranty says it all watch this space.

i ordered my ix35 on April 9th, and the oder from says delivery in May. It then moved to June, and now i'm told it will be july. I'm tempted to wait until the 61 reg also. I'm tempted to buy something else, but the spec and the value are so good, i won't get anything as good for the same money.

I think you'll be waiting a while for a 61 reg, I think that's September 2011, you'll be after a 60 reg I think. It's looking like a 3+ month wait for an order. Not surprised though, it's a good car. Diesel engine is very nice. Good pull and economy is possible if you work at it. Equipment level's are excellent and unrivalled at this price. Ticks every box.

I have had the 2.0l petrol ix35 for a mounth now and bought it strightout of the showroom. The amount of time quoted to wait for a casa white style was very off putting so decided to take the one in the showroom which was readily available. I have now done 1000 miles and the car is begining to open up nicly. The ride is very comfortable and the finish is even better than i hoped it would be. In general i am more than happy with it and am happy with my chioce of the petrol engine. Compared to a kuga its brilliant value for money. *****

Ordered my 2.0crdi 4wd premium with media pack & metalic paint on 5th June. To be fair to dealer - he openly advised 2-3 month wait. However I was hopeful that it would be sooner. Looks like i'll be better waiting that bit longer for new reg plates. Unbeatable value for money and probably underestimated by most. However - don't right this vehicle off until you have had a good look and decent test drive. The vehicle wasn't the best drive - but makes itself very attractive both visually and on specification grounds.

Had a test drive today and was most impressed by the 2.0crdi 4wd premium. The drive is nice. A wee bit noisy but not too bad. Steering was impressive, and good pull away from standing start to cross traffic. The premium had all the gizmos that you would need even without the option packs. The wait of 3-4 months quoted is a bit excessive but shows the high atraction of this car. I'm still making up my mind but looks like I'll be going for it

replaced my VW Touran 2.0L TDi Sport with the IX35 2.0 CDRi premium with media pack 5 weeks ago trips to Cornwall and North Yorkshire have put on 2000 miles already. At least 5th gears review has done the car justice ,many reviews patronise the car as "alright for the money" Let me tell you this,Ive purchased 5 cars around £20k in the last 11 years,as well as the VW Ive had cars from Land Rover,Vauxhall,Citroen and Ford. This car is astonishing value for money, try and find a spec like my car for less than £30k,nit picking journos whine about soft touch plastics(I took my VW back under warranty because the soft touch plastic couldnt take the jip that the kids gave it !) Anyway my car is so full of leather its hard to cast an eye on the more than adequate plastics. Id never considered Hyundai till I bought my wife an i10 last year and became hooked by the quality and value,go into a showroom and speak to return customers ,some who have been returning for years ! The cars diesel engine delivers same power and torque as my VW but is behind on the MPG at around 40mpg,mind you its only done 2K and it is a 4x4.It is however great to drive, much better than the "family boxes"that Ive been driving. The media pack (sat nav/I pod integrated stereo and bluetooth phone) are the cream on the cake and family trips are much more fun now.Absolutly recommended ! !

I have owned an ix 35 2litre diesel with all the extras since 14th May. The car is superb, I have covered just under 5000 miles so far, travelling both on motorways and rural roads. In recent years, I have owned both peugeots, citroens and vauxhalls. This is my favourite so far to drive, nice light clutch, easy to steer, comfortable, loads of accelleration when needed, all the gismo's. Highly recommend this vehicle. Lots of posative comments on the styling of the vehicle.

I test drove a premium 4x4 ix35 at my local dealer this weekend just gone and was very impressed on how good quality it was and how easy it is to drive compared to some 4x4s that I have driven in the past. We have just ordered a new one on July 7th and have been told that delivery will be mid October but most likely in November :-( cant wait to get it now. Gone for Machine Silver Premium.

The easiest Dealership I have ever had to deal with, the test drive hooked me straight away. I ordered mid April and was told 6-8 weeks. Not a problem for me as I am in no rush. Also the dealer wanteed my part-ex immediately and has lent me a very nice Mondeo 2 litre diesel, covered on his insurance. I have been told my car has now arrived at Tilbury so should have it in a couple of weeks. The main point being the dealer in Bradford was up front and honest with me no B******t.

Ordered our Cassa White Premium CRDi with both packs at the beginning of May. Was told on ordering that it would be delivered August. Have been told today that we are now looking at October for delivery. We have sold our old car private but again as in the post Alan Webster put up, our dealer also has lent us a car till it arrives. Only in our case, it is an 02 plate Micra. Very impressed with the service so far from our dealer but not as impressed with Hyundai Uk regarding keeping us imformed on the cars progress. We have had to do all the chasing so far to find out what was going on. Looking forward to finally getting the car but 5 months is a long time to wait!

Ordered ix35 Premium 4WD beginning of May with the optional media pack. Original delivery date into the dealer was 1st Sept, now put back to 21st Sept. I've ordered through my work's lease company and the delay on the order tracking says due to factory volume. I haven't actually seen one on the road since I test drove in May, however, reading how there seems to be a lot delayed, looks like I'll see plenty after October!!

I am seriously considering the ix35 after driving one in France. I want an Automatic which is now available to order. The icing on the cake is the Auto has almost 50bhp more than the manual and is the fastest version of the ix35 by a long shot. Almost 2 secs faster to 60 and a top speed of 121mph means there will be more than enough mid range pull. I will have this as my town car as I want Hyundai to import the GENESIS/EQUUS to replace my 8 year old Lexus 430. A few years ago you wouldn't have used both names in the same breath. Well done Hyundai.

Had my Ix35 since May ,running really well just thought Id report on its abilities in the November Snow.Sheffield Has just broken all records for the amount of snowfall with 2 feet in some places and the city is built on seven hills, in the eastern Pennines ! The car is brilliant in the snow ! I got to work every day and Ive been rescuing my mates ! There is a knack to get the best though.switch to the 4 x 4 LOCK and switch off the nannying traction control ,take it easy on the throttle and it will go anywhere ! I took the direct route to work which involves crossing the Don Valley at neepsend and climbing a 1 in 6 hill NO PROBLEM ! The hill descent control works OK as well on snowy hills but a warning...it wont help on sheet ice on steep hills ! I had a scary moment with the car gathering speed as the ABS decided to let the brakes go ! the adrenaline reminded me not to be a prat next time ! I used to own the old shape Freelander and that did the same thing.HDC is OK for muddy hills and ordinary snow but dont attempt sheet ice. The Hyundai has better forward traction than the Freelander although I dont know why.Can anyone tell me,does the 4 x 4 lock also limit the differentials ? The Borg Warner 4wd system gives a 50/50 split,I dont know what the Freelander gives. I still doff my cap to the discoverys and range rovers that are climbing up ridiculously steep hill round me in the Rivelin Valley now they are PROPER four wheel drives ! BUT for a third of the price the Hyundai is getting me to work every day and even heating my familys bottoms with the heated seats as well !

Have spents weeks now reading review after review. Only negative points I have found so far is regards to the steering and the waiting time for car to be delivered. Everyhting about the car sounds spot on apart from the badge and that is the part that scares me. Should I/shoudn't I? Does anyone have any information on the AUTO. That is the one I am most interested in due to faster acceleration and top end speed. Just not sure how reliable an AUTO is. Do these tend to have problems - both short term and long term?

Just purchased a nearly new IX35 2.0d Style with 3000 miles and I have to say I am delighted with it. I read all the reviews about steering but personally I find it is light and responsive and does what its meant to do - steer!. The bluetooth and kit are alo excellent as I can keep all my i phone numbers and music easily to hand. The MPG is a bit lower at 41 mpg. Probably not as refined as some of its other competitors but pound for pound it can't be beaten.

Corners as well the 4x4 Sante Fe in the wet, and have had no wheel spin as reported in other reviews. so don't be too concerned about opting for the 4wd version. Fuel econonmy is excellent. Averaging 43mpg mostly town driving (that's working it out on a fuel used not the gauge). I got the 1.7 crdi premium, back in Jan 2011. I was after the 2 litre model but not waiting 4 months plus. That said the car has now 2,500 miles on the clock and i find it very comfy. It is a bit slow of the mark (cheap to run) but cant complain for a 1.7 If I drive sedately, which is easy in a comfy car I can get to 49.9 mpg but if I hoof it on the motorway for 250 miles Im down to 42 mpg (85-90mph), Im sure this is where the 2.0 litre would have been better as engine is less strained. this said once you are moving the car is hard to hold back due to high torque at low revs. I would buy this car again and the wife liked this much more than the nissan version.

Car in general really good - one problem with the media pack (apart from not taking full post-codes) was when we were well away from home on a Sunday and the media pack failed. All it would display was "welcome" and was stuck on the radio station it was last left on. Nothing else media wise would work - no SatNav, no CD, no usb, none of the media buttons would work at all. stop/start the car had no affect. Boring drive home - fortunately we had an old style map in the boot as the Satnav had failed. Next day it started fine and no problem. Hyundai say "known problem - software fix available" and they have arranged with local Garage - local garage say they Hyundai have not been in touch with them and they have never heard of the problem before. Car now a few months old and done 6666 miles. this is the only problem so far but still trying to get a sensible answer from Hyundai/service.

Have been living in South Korea for the past year and my girlfriend bought the IX35, Ivory much nicer than the white but sadly uk market doesn't do it. I have driven all over South Korea on trips up to 8 hours long and its awesome. All kinds of weather no worries. Back in the UK now and there was no doubt about what i was going to buy. As I work away a lot I also got fed up of the waiting time so never got round to ordering one. But just yesterday I stumbled on a cancled order 2.0 diesel premiun with media pack 500 quid off not bad, I snapped it up straight away as I know exactly what i'm getting. The only down side is the one we have in Korea is Auto and my GF wont be to happy about driving a right hand drive manual in the UK...but thats good for me as I will get to do most of the driving over here and she can drive me around in Korea. So anyone still waiting push your patience to the limit as I promise you it will be worth the wait. I paid 21695 UKP and the one we have in Korea same spec we paid 15150 UKP big difference but still great value compared to the rest of the market. by the way please do not compare the iX35 with Ford Kuga.....iX35 is in a class of its own hence the reason we bought two of them.

Test drove this car last weekend and thought it was absolutely fantastic ! So have now ordered a 2.0 crdi 4X4 with media and individual pack. Spent a number of weeks test driving other similiar cars and NOTHING was a patch of this hyundai. The quality is exceptional for the price, and I think the actual drive was very responsive with a really good feel to the steering. Picked up my ix35 Premium diesel auto on the 26th of March, having ordered it 3 to 4 weeks prior. It has the media and individual packs, and everything about the car is astounding, from the smoothness of the gearbox to the amount of thought that went in to the interior. The auto also has 181bhp instead of the manual's 134bhp, and the transmission delivers this with fluid ease, making the car a sheer joy to drive. Bravo, Hyundai!

I'm back from my posting on April 2nd to say that I picked up my 2.0 CRDi Auto Premium (with both packs) on April 5th and I am really pleased with it. Like Nik says, the acceleration is fabulous from the 181bhp engine and over-taking is so easy now. It's so smooth too. I don't really know why all the reports are saying it's noisey at speed- maybe that is the manual transmission. I thought it was pretty quiet. The Sat Nav menus on the media pack is a bit clunky compared with TomTom menus (which are brilliant) but it does work and you soon get used to it. The display layout isn't as clear as the TomTom but again it is workable and the big plus is it is integated so no sticking it to the windscreen and having wires trailing around. My v6 petrol Sportage did 22 mpg (ugh!) and the ix35 is giving me 36 mpg as an average but I haven't done a long motorway journey yet or "run it in" so I'm hoping for better than that- even so the price per mile has dropped from 22p for the Sportage to 14p for the ix35 (taking into consideration the difference in price per litre of unleaded v diesel. All in all- I'm 100% pleased with it- fabulous value for money (we'll try and forget it's £14,000 equivalent in Korea!)

I have now had my IX35 Premium for 8 months and apart from a couple of small faults which were quickly put right I have been more than satisfied both with its appearance and performance.I decided to go the whole hog and added the Media & Ind pack and have since added side steps, skid plates, mudflaps etc.I was unsure on the colour I selected(Cassis White) but everyone who's seen the car have been very complimentary and I now think I made the right choice. As I have had previously owned three Santa Fe's (auto's) I wasn't sure if I would be happy settling for a manual G/Box but its not been a problem although I still prefer auto's and now they are appearing in the IX35s I am tempted to get one, possibly next year .The one annoying trait is not being able to listen to the media ie radio or usb whilst parked as a warning appears on the screen after a few minutes telling me if I dont start the engine it it will switch off.It appears this is a safety feature but its a pain.

Ordered a 4WD 2.0 Style at beginning of August for delivery at end of October / early November. Was phoned by broker in September to say delivery had been put back until February. In January, I phoned to check only to be told that delivery was now April. Had to buy a cheap car on Ebay to tie us over but it's been so good we decided to keep it and cancel the Hyundai. Someone will get 'our' Hyundai ahead of time, good luck to you, it's a cracking car for the money, shame delivery times are so poor.

I’ve had the ix35 CRDi 2W since June 2010 and have covered 9600 miles, all trouble free. Initially the mpg was not that good but as the engine free’d up and I got more mileage under its belt it rapidly improved. On a fast motorway, city, urban 40 miles commute I average 40mpg, compared to the 24mpg I got from my new style Jeep Grand Cherokee. I am fairly heavy on the right foot so mid-40’s should be easy to achieve for someone less inpatient than I. I actually got 45mp on a 400 mile run doing a fairly constant 80 up the M1 at night, so keeping it at a steady speed helps. I like the ergonomics as everything is well though out and easy to find and use. Some of the detail points are very nice and I especially like the Bluetooth hand free reception and use through the radio. During the recent snow it was better than average even though 2WD, obviously not a patch on my Jeep but better than my wife’s’ Peugeot and other cars, probably the ground clearance helped. So very nice car to own and run and I’m pleased I brought it. Given the choice again I would buy it again, which say’s it all. A quibble – the automatic lights don’t come on early enough in dark’ish conditions such as dusk. About the only negative thing I can find to say and rectified by mark1 eyeball and a slight twist on the light stalk.

I went for the 2wd 2-litre Diesel Premium, the car is very well made, easy to handle roomy looks good and all aspects of the Ix35 are great as i've had mine 7 months now, but the big disappointment is the sat nav is rubbish as you can't enter a full postcode and if the address for example is on a industrial estate without a road name or recently a brewery we visited in the lakes it won't find it, we have had words with our dealer and Hyundai uk to explain the problem and they were not aware there was one, so anyone else out there let them know, as this car itself i would recommend highly, come on Hyundai simple software problem could be sorted easily!!!

Bought my ix35 a month ago, have done around 1400 miles and on the way home after a long drive I had the "freezing" problem with the media pack where nothing functions, not even the reverse camera! Turning the engine off/on makes no difference. I left it overnight and in the morning it worked fine! But as the day warmed up (it's been hot recently, right?) it stopped working again until the evening when it started to work no problem. So I think, from very limited research, that the issue is heat-related. I love this car but this problem has taken the lustre off what should be a very exciting time. I hope Hyundai get it sorted out without anyone having to have any panelling removed, cos you all know that when they start doing that, it never goes back the same as at the factory and it's when rattles start ....... Would really like to hear from anyone else who has had this problem- especially if it's been fixed without removal/exchange of the unit.

I have had a 2.0 Premium with media pack in black pearl since July 2010 and can only say what a fantastic car it is. Just clocked up over 9000 miles (including around 5000 in Europe). The media pack has frozen on me a couple of times and as the previous poster said, the following morning it has always reset itself. The horn is pretty soft (from the inside at least!) and the doors need to be pulled quite hard to shut properly! Apart from these minor niggles the car is super - and the fact that I have only seen about 4 in the last 9 months makes it quite a red letter day when I see one around! I would recommend the car very highly. Looking forward to driving it down through France again in the summer to Corsica. Took it to the local car wash this afternoon and she shines like new again!

Update from my posting on April 22nd....... I took my misbehaving media pack (still attached to my car of course!) to my dealership. They reloaded the software and applied an update and for the last 24 hours all has been working brilliantly. So fingers crossed that that is all problems sorted. I guess as more and more chip-controlled elements are introduced to our cars we can expect more and more highly problems to do with buggy software. I still love my car. As previous poster observed, my doors take a bit of a push to shut them but I think this is just good seals. If you crack a window, they are very easy to close- well mine are!!! No other problems at all.

Bought my local dealers demonstrator with 840 miles on the clock. due to shortage of 2.0 diesel, would n't give me a penny off in discount! My car is a Premium which came with the individual pack. Overall pleased except for two things. No1 Official fuel consumption figures are somebodies pipedream I cant achieve the quoted urban mpg with an extra urban type journey! so instead of just under 50 to the gallon of diesel I'm getting about 42 mpg, so as far as I'm concerned actual mpg is 16 - 20% worse than official figures. This is the first car I've owned where I can't achieve the combined fuel consumption figure quoted. No 2 is the car audio system fitted - absolute rubbish - worst I've had in a car for probably 20 years and the in built bluetooth system is also (being polite) not the best either

I read these 'USER' reviews with great interest, as I am thinking of ordering one! WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? The people who actually own/drive an ix35 all seem to give it 4 or 5 stars..... those people still on the waiting list give it ONE star! what are we reviewing here? The ability of Hyundai to make enough cars to meet the order book.... or the merits of the actual vehicle! Fifth Gear should be deleting the ONE STAR ratings being awarded by frustrated customers who have not yet received the cars that they have ordered, as this is 'skewing' the star ratings of real owners/users. If this was done then this vehicle appears to merit nearly a 5 STAR rating!

Test drove the ix35 1.7 and 2.0 diesel some time ago and am completely smitten.I have been considering ,buying one for a while and am picking one up on Friday 20/05/11. The 2.0 litre is the one for motorway driving as the 1.7 was a little sluggish. Machine silver medium and individual pack, bring it on. Hyundai you have a winner. The smile on my face is gonna take some shifting.

Two problems with the IX35 which I've had for 2 months, one is that you can't read the camera or satnav in daylight because it is at a shallow angle. The more serious fault that I'm having continuous dialogue with the supplier and that is low mpg. Amazingly if you drive at an indicated 70mph on motorways, it drinks like an alcoholic. No way my car will ever be within 20% of the claimed figures, and on previous cars I have always beaten the government tests

I have had my 2.0l 4wd premium since June last year. I bought it out of the showroom and I have been absolutely delighted with it, My only minor grump was the low mpg. I drive 54 miles one way to work on a mixture of urban, country and motorway and only managed 38mpg. However since I recently had it serviced the mpg has risen and I now get at leat another 30 miles out of the tank. This is due to an ECU update which was done as part of the service. Handling is great and the 4wd was well used this last winter. I drive throught he Snake Pass in Derbyshire each day and the car handles it so well. I remember on one occasion when it was wet and I came upon a lake on the road in the dark. It sailed through (pardon the pun) and my previous Audi A3 would have taken me off the road.

I have just taken delivery of an ix35 1.7CRDi 6 speed manual 2WD style and boy am I impressed. Having traditionally driven vauxhall, vw, ford, renault and nissans saloons I am delighted to have broken away from those boring cars. The ix35's level of interrior finish, exterrior style, running costs and all round value for money is still making me smile. Before purchasing I looked at the obvious competitors and found they couldn't compete on value for money, style and standard equipment. This crossover vehicle ticks all the right boxes for my needs and driving patterns and has pleased the family no end. I am now pleased to be driving a major global brand vehicle having broken away from the traditional UK/European mind set of what is the norm, I am no longer a stepford motorist

I have just counted the reviews that award low stars for long delivery times and they total 11 out of 68 ie. about 15%. If these reports are ignored then the user/customer rating from actual owners/drivers must be 4.5 stars. My 5 star rating is based on a test drive, but as nothing has yet gone wrong on my 2006 mark 1 Santa I shall not be ordering an ix35 just yet (but it will be my next replacement 4 x 4)....... With a bit of luck the delivery situation will have improved by then!

Apologies re my last review...... I should have said 'SANTA FE' not just 'Santa' (which may confuse some readers). Having said that, I still cannot think of a single criticism that would reduce my 5 star rating on the ix35, based on my test drive.

Ordered in the end of June including media pack. Will receive it on July 12th. Not bad. As everybody knows, Hyundai have went cheap on certain parts. Also, It is not a true 4x4 or SUV. It is a urban crossover so we should not compare it with true 4x4 ones. Engine is ok but not spectacular. I like the agressive design. Very updated with clean lines. Satnav/Bluetooth/DVD/rear cam is great. maps are upgradeable. Let´s see how it performs over time.

Purchased a 1.7d 2WD in March and have been really pleased with it. Great driving position. Coasts up my local hills in 4th or 5th gear and has a fair punch on motorways. If the economy indicated is accurate I am getting around 48/49mpg. No problems as yet and the dealer experience was excellent (Berkeley Vale Motors). Got a great deal through the Hyundai 'Affinity' scheme which is not well publicised - if you have a close relative with a 'Blue Badge' you can get around 9% discount!

Very very nice looking car, But my top of the range ix35 rattles, mostly in the center. On smooth road it's quiet as.. But on the rough noises appear from all around. Who else has these noises.. It is crap when one spends so much money on a brand new car.

Just purchased a 60-plate 2.0 litre 2wd Diesel Premium with the Media Pack with 7,900 on the clock. After owning a Honda Accord Exec for eight years I couldn't see me changing makes but after test driving the CRV and the Hyundai there was no contest. What a superb well equipped vehicle, effortless on the motorway and lovely to drive around town. I got 46 mpg on a M54/M6/M42/ M40/M4 trip this week and that's not being light-footed. As mentioned earlier in this forum there is an ECU software update to give improved performance and economy. I called into the local Hyundai repairer and booked it in for the update free of charge. They downloaded the update and 17 others yesterday and then loaded them into my vehicle. They don't do it unless you ask and it took about 45 minutes.

I bought my 1.7 premium in june. It was a demonstrator with 3000 miles on it. this is the first car that has made me smile in a long time. It is really comfortable and easy to drive. I have been pleasantly suprised at the fuel consumption of around 51/52 mpg on a variety of roads. I looked at a kuga before I bought this one but the kuga felt claustrafobic in both the front and rear seats. this is a great car if you haven't driven one take a test drive you will be impressed. you can see more of the scenery and enjoy driving this one

I have now owned my 2.0 CRDi Premium with Media Pack for 15 months and have covered just over 14,000 miles which include 2 long return trips to Corsica (summer 2010 and 2011) and 8 return trips to Normandy. I can only underline what I said on 24 April, it is a really great car - a head turner and very relaxing to drive, especially on a long European trip. The media screen has frozen a few times leading my dealer to update the software at the first service. It happened again in Corsica and I agree with the writer who thought it is probably caused by heat. Getting into the car in 35+ degrees C it often froze - getting its act together once the aircon had gone to work! I hope the nightmare waiting times for customers have calmed somewhat - I have noticed a change in the colour range supplied iin the UK - no more Cassa White or Black Pearl - they appear to have been replaced by Creamy White and Phantom Black; in addition the red has disappeared completely! Drive carefully - and above all, enjoy the car!

Just returned the 2.0 litre diesel ix35 today after 6 days as a rental vehicle. As a 21 year old who had previously driven only a Nissan Micra, I was somewhat daunted by the size of the car at first - I was expecting a Ford Fiesta! After the shock had worn off though, I ended up being rather impressed by the car. The ix35 has both an attractive exterior and a spacious interior, with comfortable seats, a roomy boot and plenty of legroom for both front and rear passengers. It managed to hold 5 days worth of camping equipment and supplies with room to spare. The car in addition was smooth to drive and handled well on the flat with responsive steering and great acceleration when needed. Problems with the vehicle over the week were mostly to do with driving up inclines - the ix35 really seemed to struggle with the steep hills of Dorset unless in a very low gear. In addition we had apparent problems getting the boot to lock, although that may have been affected by the smartkey. Overall I would still definitely recommend the ix35 - plus we certainly got lucky with the hire company!

Running an ix35 2.0CRDi 4WD Premium for almost a month with nearly 2000 miles of largely longer distance driving on the clock. Pleased with overall quality and fit with no rattles or squeaks so far. Manual gearchange is a little notchy and general performance good bearing in mind the engine rating (which should be 25% higher). Bluetooth linking is fine but reliance upon voice control only makes it very unreliable since any background noise (normal driving) defeats the recognition software completely. Controls and software quite a way behind competitors such as Skoda. Biggest complaint though is inability to get within 30% of average MPG quoted even on long motorway trips - best so far is 37mpg!!! How can they publish such a misleading set of figures?
