Infiniti GJuly 2010

Recommended.

Infinitis are still not a common sight on the UK's roads, but this G Coupe is a worthy contender to the established German rivals

Infiniti G Coupe

Fifth Gear Infiniti G review

1. Luxurious interior
2. Stands out from the usual German offering
3. Fantastic performance

WE DON'T LIKE

1. Petrol engine is monumentally thirsty
2. Jerky automatic gearbox
3. Rarity means it doesn't quite have the kudos just yet

If you are lucky enough to be in the market for a premium coupe then you'd think there would be plenty of choice.

But a brief glance at the top of the class would suggest there are only three brands to choose from - and they're all German.

However, Audi, BMW and Mercedes owners might need to reconsider their first choice when it comes to replacing their pride and joy thanks to the arrival of the Infiniti G class.

Infiniti, for those who don't know, is the sporting arm of Nissan - similar to Lexus's place in Toyota, but with more of an emphasis on driver enjoyment rather than all out luxury.

The G Coupe will probably remain tantalisingly out of reach for anyone who has to bear running costs in mind as the car is only available with a 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine under the bonnet, but if that's not an issue then you're in for a treat.

Find a clear road and the G will pull rapidly up to speed in a satisfyingly sonorous way. Officially it gets to 62mph in 5.9 seconds from a standstill, but oodles of power mean that it is happy accelerating from almost any point in the rev range.

Where the G is less happy is at low speeds, and it can be quite a frustrating car to drive around town. The automatic gearbox is to blame for this, as it is irritatingly jerky when asked to change ratios at slower speeds. The looks are aided by elements such as the 19-inch alloy wheels, which come as part of a generous standard equipment list that also includes a hard disc drive media player, intelligent cruise control and scratch resistant paint.

Even though Infiniti says it is aiming more at the sports car market than the luxury one, there is no paring down on the sense of cosseting from the quality of materials and finish inside. Everything felt like it was put together to a beautifully high standard, even down to the oval Infiniti branded clock on the centre console.

If we are being fussy some of the switches could be criticised for their lack of practicality - it was tricky to see whether the heated seats were switched on or not thanks to their odd lighting system. But there was never any doubt that this is a genuine contender in the luxury segment - anyone who is bored of Germany's usual suspects would do well to consider this Japanese offering.

Fifth Gear overall car ratings

STYLING

As Infiniti is a relative unknown in a sector that is often about image, its looks could be said to be vital. It proves to be attractive but not too eye catching - a good mix.

HANDLING

A four-wheel steering system means this car feels a lot more agile than it should given its size. It feels like a genuine sports car.

COMFORT

A slightly firm ride is made up for by a plush interior, and supporting and comfortable seats.

QUALITY & RELIABILITY

Infiniti is still relatively new to Europe, so there is no precursor to go by. However, a premium brand that is basically a Nissan underneath should have no issues with reliability.

PERFORMANCE

This is a quick and powerful car, aided by a gloriously responsive petrol engine. The only letdown is the gearbox, which can be slightly jerky at lower speeds.

ROOMINESS

The coupe will not be bought by anyone that is looking to carry much stuff around, and it is just as well given the space in the rear.

STEREO / SAT NAV

The optional sat nav is remarkably easy to use, and comes with an 11 speaker Bose stereo on higher trim levels. As you'd expect, this produces a fantastic sound.

RUNNING COSTS

Only offering a large petrol engine is not the best way to save the pennies. Expect the tax disc to be pricey and mpg figures to remain in the low 20s at best.

VALUE FOR MONEY

The G comes stacked with plenty of kit - a hard disc player, intelligent cruise control and 19-inch alloys. Equipment like this would embarrass several German rivals.

ENVIRONMENT

Not one of the G models offers emissions below 225g/km, no thanks to the 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine that is the only option at the moment. Buyers with an eco conscience will probably not even make it as far as the showroom.

I have owned the G37 Convertible for a year and it is a fantastic car. It is a head turner and always draws compliments. Its performance is excellent other than in first gear. But, when it decides to go, it is hard to catch. At over 100 mph, it still wants to go faster without any strain. The only complaint is that the seat belt retractors are quirky and do not retract and storage is non-existent with the top down. Overall, a great car, with great performance and luxury, which is not a BMW or Audi and looks better.
