SsangYong RodiusOctober 2005

Not recommended.

If you must have the maximum possible space at the lowest possible price, the Rodius makes sense. But don't plan to resell it any time soon.

SsangYong has been struggling to break into the British market and the Rodius isn't going to buck the trend. While you might be delighted with the amount of space, a lowly price tag and the standard equipment list, it's already been singled out as the ugliest car money can buy. Owners should be prepared for some raucous pavement tittering. If you can cope with that, then this enormous MPV can seat seven people in comfort and has the benefit of a 2.7 litre Merced+D218es diesel engine that should last the course, even if it a design Mercedes itself abandoned years ago. There's no lack of innovation inside, with rear seats that can be folded flat to create a decent bed, a middle row that rotates to face the rear, plus every VW Beetle lovers must-have accessory - a flower vase on the dashboard. There is also the option of 4wd, which gives the car about as much extra traction as if you covered your hands in goose fat and then tried to push the Rodius. In addition, build quality doesn't match modern standards and the Rodius feels cheap to the touch. The biggest concern is the lack of rigidity - over bumps you can almost feel the body twisting, which does not augur well for longevity. Inexpensive but you might not feel so cheerful when depreciation has taken its toll.

Fifth Gear overall car ratings

STYLING

Already branded 'the world's ugliest car', the wacky styling will split opinion wherever you drive it. While the profile is best described as 'unique' the rear end looks like it was added as an afterthought.

HANDLING

Fine in a straight line but corners reveal a super-soft suspension that makes for excessive body roll. Best used for long distance motorway runs and not A-road trips - unless you supply passenger sick bags.

COMFORT

Big, comfy seats could do with a little more support around the edges. The suspension soaks up the bumps bur the Rodius roll is ever-present. It's quite heavy to park in tight spaces too.

QUALITY & RELIABILITY

This is driving on a tight budget. Loads of standard equipment but you can't escape the lack of quality coming from the trim.

PERFORMANCE

Don't go thinking you will be driving the Rodius with enthusiasm. Despite the beefy 2.7 turbodiesel, any performance is sapped by a standard automatic gearbox.

ROOMINESS

Designed to carry 11 Koreans (really), so it happily swallows seven Europeans. Both head and legroom are excellent, with cubbyholes dotted around the cabin.

STEREO / SAT NAV

Average at best. Too many fiddly buttons and a bit of a stretch to reach them too.

RUNNING COSTS

The 2.7 engine needs to be worked hard to serve up any decent performance, which means economy suffers as a result. The engine emissions give it a high tax band rating.

VALUE FOR MONEY

You might think the Rodius represents great value but before you go rushing for a cheque book, check out what it might be worth in two years time. Scary depreciation even if you get lots for your money.

ENVIRONMENT

The ancient 2.7 litre diesel Mercedes van engine that powers the Rodius pumps out around 250g/km of CO2 when fitted with an automatic transmission. The only good news is that they have managed to squeeze the manual just below the 225 g/km tax threshold.

The Rodius is actually a perfect car. I know it has dodgey looks but I really like it. It's very comfortable inside and it is so roomy inside. I have to admit that the looks are actually OK, but of course not the nicest. I would give it a 5 star if they changed the looks slightly.

My daily kidscontainer. In fact I injoying travelling in the Rodius. It is only built for travelling, Not for daily kids taxidriving, trust me I have 3 boys, but I do like to taxidrive for my sons footballteam. The dvd in the top is hit every time. And gess what it even has a fortune in the norwegian winterly alpes :o) It is backwheel-driven, summer/winter-button, easy swift from automatic gearshift to manual and has APS, so it is comfortable and easy to drive for our skiholiday in Norway. I actully like its design, because it is its own.

A great car to drive, handling very well (in spite of what some critics have said), it accelerates well even at speed and if you are one of those drivers that like to be high up - this is your car. If you suffer from any back problems, this is easy to get in and out of. Very comfortable on long runs. Its' unusual looks match its' unusual name, but hey, I ain't no oil painting either. The 2-2-3 seating arrangement is superb, and six-foot tall adults sit in the back seats of mine quite regularly and have plenty of head room. The vehicle is very spacious and it is a real eye opener to see what you can pack into one of these machines by moving the seats around. I am not at all disappointed with my Rodius, having owned it from new for 8 months now. My only criticism is fuel consumption which runs at about 30mpg on local trips to 37mpg on the run. This is on the par with every vehicle I have ever owned though, so in reality my only reason for diappointment is that the fuel consumption is not better than my other vehicles.

i am a taxi driver and i looked at every 7 seater and the rodius was the only one that could take 6 passengers and there lugage.when i went to the main dealer to buy it i said are parts easy to get, he said yes. it has got 35,000 miles on the clock i have done 12,000 miles and ready for new discs so i phone the maindealer and he said we have got a problem getting parts.these sould be off the shelf parts. so i am thinking if i had a part what puts me off the road how long would i be off the road?. if the parts where easy to get i would say this car is 5 star and my passengers agree they love it.also can any body tell me where the oil filter is. i do my own servicing because i have had bad experiance with garages and i dont trust them on my car.

I am wondering if 5th Gear actually sat in and drove the Rodius. Its interesting that the people that own them find them outstanding and those that dont make odd claims like lack of build quality and poor performance. Having owned many premium vehicles over the years I rate the build quality of the Rodius as one of the best. Peel back the layers and you'll find attention to detail often overlooed by other manufactuers. I have the SV320 and its performance in hauling over 2ton to 100Kph sees many other motorists left behind. If you are looking for a people mover, dont bother reading motor journalist and mainstream reviews as their perceptions and objectives are flawed. Read user reviews from people all over the world that actually own and use the Rodius and you will find its a wonderful vehicle.

Hello fellow Rodius drivers, I have to help John the Taxi driver, the Rodius has in internal type oil filter so its not easy to spot. I hand mine to ATS with an on-line bought filter and 2 x5 ltrs of fully synthetic oil and they charge me £20, - not worth getting my hands dirty. I use my Rodi as a family taxi and for long haul holiday or business trips to Germany or Spain. With a full load 400kg ( remove bench seat) it happily does 100mph on the Auto routes with 4 people. Mine is a 56 reg and has done 70K miles with no trouble, rattles or problems. Effortless driving compared to many company cars I have over the years from Renault, Peugeot, VW, Skoda et all. I love the 30k servicing, only criticism is the star trek key fobs from Cobra are always breaking up. I've fitted a wireless camera from Swann so I can see out the back when its full of people or luggage and I can park easily within 2cm of other cars. For those who say its ugly - true. See Seat, Volvo, Dodge for equals. For those who say its not well built - Wrong - see Renault for poor build. Its great value and been very reliable, I've pulled loads of people out of snow, ditches, pulled cars from muddy fields, jump started them and loads of other practical things not many other cars can do. I'm sure many of the crititcs have not driven the car for more than a few minutes round a test track somewhere. Colleagues are always amazed at the leather seats, electonics and comfy ride. As a company car on PCP, I put a write off value of Zero so I've had 5 years of great motoring, I own it in full and at the end of the day I've 2.5 tonnes of scrap steel when I eventually decide its no longer economical to service. Brilliant!!
