Mercedes E Class

Fifth Gear Mercedes E Class review

1. Refinement
2. Mercedes' quality feel has returned
3. Thoroughness of design - it does everything either well or very well

WE DON'T LIKE

1. Auto is not a six-speeder on smaller diesels
2. Most petrol engines seem pretty pointless in the UK
3. Air Cap compromises the otherwise good looks of the Cabriolet

Mercedes now has a vast model range, but the E Class has always been its heartland car. It was profits from these that paid for the expansion of the range, first into the 190/C Class and then everything else. Now freed from the disastrous marriage with Chrysler, Mitsubishi and most of the other idiotic ideas of the previous management (only Maybach continues to hang around like a bad smell), Mercedes can get back to doing what it does best.

The styling of the new E Class immediately tells you this is a company that has recovered its self confidence. The front end is assertive without being shouty - the new sharp-edged headlights look far more positive than the slightly apologetic round ones of the old car. That air of confidence pervades the whole design. Mercedes knows it is not BMW and has developed a car which is good to drive, but concentrates on refinement rather than outright handling.

This is most evident in the coupe and convertible versions, especially the drop top model. A fantastic new innovation called the Air Cap makes the cabin a quieter place to be in comparison to old four seat cabriolets. It is a small retractable spoiler that sits above the windscreen, and while it does remove most of the buffeting in the back seats, it does compromise the looks of the car while it is up.

Mercedes being Mercedes, you can have Sport and even AMG versions, but that is rather missing the point of the car. The new E Class makes most sense as an E220 or E250 CDI, with the excellent diesel engine proving strong performance and very competitive fuel economy. The E350 CGI petrol is amusing when you really want to press on, but for 99% of the time the smaller diesels provide all the power you want.

Nowadays, there are so many cars trying to be something they are not, that is very satisfying to waft along in an E250 CDI. It is a car that knows exactly what is wants to be and achieves it goal: a refined, spacious executive cruiser that can handle impressively when needed.

Fifth Gear overall car ratings

STYLING

It is a conservative basic shape, but there are an awful lot of details. The estate is a large and good looking beast, while the coupe and convertible are sophisticated rather than sporty.

HANDLING

The standard E Class is no sports model, but it is a good handling car given its size and character. The accurate steering also makes it feel very controllable. Sport versions lose more in comfort than they gain in handling.

COMFORT

It is spacious, refined and comfortable - everything you could reasonably ask for. Front seat occupants may prefer the Jaguar XF's more dramatic interior, but rear passengers will stick to the Mercedes.

QUALITY & RELIABILITY

After hitting a low point around 2000, when some Mercedes felt more like Renaults, things have steadily improved. The new E Class could well turn out to be a five star car after a few years of experience, but it is too early to be sure.

PERFORMANCE

Mercedes has got serious about its smaller engines and the new four-cylinder diesels are excellent - the C220 CDI provides 168bhp and the C250 CDI offers 201bhp. Bigger engines provide more power - up to the unreconstructed 518 bhp E63 AMG. The E250 CDI is perfectly adequate, however.

ROOMINESS

As well as being the world's second most famous taxi, the E Class has to transport a lot of executives in its rear seats. Hence Mercedes has made sure they have plenty of room and even worked on the shape of the rear door aperture to endure that it is as easy as possible to get in and out of the car.

STEREO / SAT NAV

As ever, there is a huge range of possible systems. They range from good to excellent, although if you are new to Mercedes, the more you pay, the longer you are going to have to spend learning all the controls.

RUNNING COSTS

Clearly, no E Class is going to be cheap to service, but fuel economy is much improved. Residual values should be strong provided that Mercedes resists the temptation to pump up the volume too far.

VALUE FOR MONEY

Mercedes models have been getting steadily better value over the years as the market has become more competitive. Equipment is now respectable with alloys, air conditioning and Bluetooth standard across the range. The price for the big-selling E220 CDI is almost identical to the BMW 520d, which is as reasonable as you could hope for.

ENVIRONMENT

From the 2012 model year, emissions have been cut radically as Mercedes tries to get on level terms with Audi and BMW.

I love that car !!! That CDI engines are brilliant and economical and they have good performance. The 350 CDI with its 231 BHP engine is just the best. But it's still hard to choose between the 5 series and the E-class. ( 530d and E-350 CDI )AND THE E 250 CDI

AN EXCELLANT CAR WHICH HAS PUT THE E CLASS BACK AT THE TOP BOTH IN LOOKS AND DRIVE, I HAVE REALLY ENJOYED DRIVING IT WHILST IT WAS WOKING!! MY CAR WAS ONLY TWO MONTHS OLD WHEN THE PROBLEM WAS FOUND. THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE THE PISTONS AND IT IS A PROBLEM ON ALL E CLASS DEISEL ENGINES UPTO E320 SIZE. THE PISTONS ARE FAULTY AND MERCEDES KNOWS OF THE PROBLEM, THERE IS A WAITIG LIST OF CARS NEEDING NEW PISTONS AND THE PROBLEM IS NOT ONLY IN THE UK. MERCEDES HAVE BEEN GOOD IN GIVING A REPLACEMENT CAR AND HAVE PROMISED TO GET THE REPAIRS DONE ASAP, BUT I AM NOT DRIVING MY NEW CAR (E200CDI) OF TWO MONTHS FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH AND EVEN UPTO TWO MONTHS! BUY THE PETROL OR A BIGGER ENGINS; AT LEAST ASK THE SALESMAN.

I got my E350 diesel Estate about a week ago (after my local dealer said there was none to be had I contacted a lease company who got me one no problem). The car is a big improvement over my 4yr old E500, not much slower but much better fuel economy (40mpg on a 500 mile round trip , 1 tank of diesel!). The car is the Sport version and is a bit hard sprung and seems to have a funny lag if you put your foot down, it seems to think about it then shoot off. This tends to make me press the accelerator even harder trying to urge it on,so when it does go it's off like a rocket. I am sure I will get used to it. The interior trim is a big improvement and it feels very solid and well put together. The toys are fun too, the sat nave/cd/radio are easy to use and work very well indeed (I have COMAND).The 'attention assist' is also an interesting innovation, but I do admit to deliberately letting the car wander from lane to lane trying to provoke it into doing something,so far to no avail. If only they could sort out the main dealers who have IMHO never been anything other than pretty rubbish. Maybe it's just my local dealership in Watford. Anyway, love the car, it gets lots of admiring looks ,and I think that maybe Mercedes have cracked it and this will be a return to the well built solid Mercs of old.

As a chauffeur I normally drive a Volvo S80. I have just been asked to change into one of our new E220 CDI's. It looks great inside and out....BUT, and this is a very big BUT. The drivers seat is the most painful seat I have ever sat in. The steering wheel is centred to the left and I do 60,000 miles a year so you need comfort in the seat. Mercedes have still not managed to address the lower back support, even with the lumbar support. As for the leather that's in the car. Isn't it PVC? It feels so cheap. I have to say the Volvo is far superior to the Merc. The Volvo feels a lot more luxurious inside and the leather is really soft. The auto gearbox maybe a little jirky but it's so much faster than the Mercs which seems to take forever when you put it in reverse. The Volvo also sounds quieter inside and there is less engine noise. It also feels a lot more spacious inside the Volvo. The dashboard is not in your face like the Merc. The equipment levels on the Merc are pretty poor for the amount of money they are asking. I can't wait to get back into an S80 again. Probably the most under rated car in it's class. Don't believe the hype about a Merc E class. Your just paying for the name, and paying too much for it.

Quality problems are well and truly back. 350Cdi engine is lovely for the first few thousand miles and then starts to sound like an old bus and the fuel economy drops like a stone. Its a known problem and Merc have no fix. Type '350Cdi engine problem' or '350Cdi injectors' into google and find loads of hits from other owners (I have one) with the same problem and receiving the same terrible service from Merc Customer Service. They say 'The best or nothing', I can only say that they went for the Nothing option. Buy an E350CGi and you'll be getting better economy that the guy that bought a E350CDi 5000 miles ago, oh and the fuel is cheaper! Great car, terrible engine reliability and the worst customer service known to man.
