Nissan PixoApril 2009

Average.

Budget city car from a trusted brand is very cheap and drives surprisingly well, but the looks are bland and it doesn't have much character.

Fifth Gear Nissan Pixo review

1. Super cheap price
2. Minimal running costs
3. Low emissions

WE DON'T LIKE

1. Boring cabin
2. Characterless feel
3. No motorway urge

This is Nissan's budget small car the Pixo, which sits below the Micra and the Note in the Japanese firm's growing range of city runabouts. It's a cheap rival for the Hyundai i10 and Kia Picanto, but one that arguably comes from a better established brand with a marginally more premium badge.

We should mention straight away, then, that this Nissan is in fact a Suzuki. It's the sister car to the mechanically identical Suzuki Alto and both are built at a factory in India, not Japan. Visually the two cars are different: the Pixo gets its own longer lights, a new front grille, different bonnet and new seat trims - a treatment that makes it look more like its bigger Nissan siblings. But really it's an Alto in disguise.

In theory this is no big deal. Manufacturers who share development and production costs are then able to bring down the showroom price of their cars. Remember that Toyota, Citroen and Peugeot did the same to launch the Aygo, C1 and 107. And this strategy helps the Pixo be one of the cheapest cars on sale in Britain. It starts from an even lower price point than the Suzuki it shares parts with.

In the cabin the set up is simple and functional, but crushingly dull. The driving position is adequate, although the lack of reach adjustment for the steering wheel will present a problem for taller drivers. The quality of the materials is only average and not up there with more premium city cars like the Toyota Aygo or Fiat Panda. But standard equipment does include Isofix mounting points and an MP3 CD player which is impressive for the money, although air conditioning is on the options list.

The petrol engine is a little three cylinder 996cc unit that produces a modest 67bhp, but because the Pixo is nice and light it still manages zero to 62mph in a bearable 14 seconds. Performance is peppy and the little engine is happy to be revved, but on the motorway its lack of mid-range go can be frustrating. The Pixo is surprisingly amusing and safe through corners and the well-mannered chassis means body control isn't bad at all. It's narrow too, so it can dart through gaps in traffic.

Overall this is a competent but rather bland city car from Nissan. Cheap it may be, but if you can stretch your budget by another thousand pounds or so much more s+D171atisfying offerings like the Hyundai i10 could be yours.

Fifth Gear overall car ratings

STYLING

Considering that it's based on a Suzuki, Nissan hasn't done a bad job making the Pixo look like one of its own. Its 'face' is a smaller version of the Note and inoffensive enough, but we didn't find it particularly funky or appealing to look at.

HANDLING

The Pixo is surprisingly agile and can be quite amusing through corners, but always safe. Body roll and weight shifting when cornering is kept in check by a well set-up chassis, but it's very easy to find the limits of the tyres' grip if you're being silly.

COMFORT

It's not what you'd call luxurious. The driving position could do with reach adjustment to make it more comfortable and the seats could be more supportive. But it would be possible to spend long trips in the Pixo if you needed to.

QUALITY & RELIABILITY

Nissan has a good reputation for this, but of course the Pixo is built in India at a Suzuki plant which may make some buyers wary. We'd point out that it has been designed to withstand rough Indian roads and could see no problem with our test car's fit and finish, even if the materials were pretty uninspiring compared with some rivals.

PERFORMANCE

The little three cylinder petrol engine has to be worked hard all the time if it's to turn in the sort of pace that keeps you in touch with fast-flow traffic, but it's happy to rev and the 0-62mph time is respectable at 11 seconds.

ROOMINESS

There's not a lot of space in the back and the cabin doesn't have much in the way of cubby holes to tuck away bits and pieces. The boot is tiny too.

STEREO / SAT NAV

An MP3 CD player as standard is pretty good at this price, sounds quality isn't the best though. Sat nav isn't an option.

RUNNING COSTS

Cheap to run with fuel economy in excess of 60mph possible and extremely low CO2 emissions that put the Pixo in the bottom rate of tax. Shame CO2 couldn't be a little lower to get road tax exemption. It is in the lowest group for insurance though.

VALUE FOR MONEY

One of the cheapest cars in the UK and well equipped with it - although air conditioning and a longer warranty would make it an unbeatable bargain. You can get more satisfying rivals for a thousand pounds-or-so more.

ENVIRONMENT

One of the lowest emitting petrol cars on sale in the UK, with just 103g/km pumped out from the tiny three cylinder petrol engine. Very impressive.

I have owned my Nissan Pixo for about 10 months. I have already clocked up 7000 miles and at no time have I regretted buying this car. Considering the other cars in the household are an Audi TT 180 (on an 03 reg) and a modified 360 brake 200 SX, you would be surprised at my decision to purchase the Pixo. Maybe even more so as it replaced an Audi A6. Although I agree with a lot of the other reviews, as an owner/user of the Nissan Pixo, I wholeheartedly recommend this car as a very real inexpensive option for you. Things I like about this car are as follows: low running costs, ease of parking in ever shrinking parking bays, it does the book speed and then some on the motorways and it still drives well with 4 blokes in it weighing more than 14st each. This is a a good car that is also quite cheap. That's all I have to say about that. Don't be put off.
