Ford KaJanuary 2009

Recommended.

This smart-looking city car is closely related to the Fiat 500. It keeps most of the styling cues of the seminal original Ford Ka, but updates the rest of the package.

Fifth Gear Ford Ka review

1. Good to drive
2. Frugal and cheap to run
3. Feels well finished and solidly constructed

WE DON'T LIKE

1. Unexceptional 1.2-litre petrol engine
2. Poor standard equipment on basic versions
3. Loud motorway cruising

Ford faced a real challenge when it came to replacing the original Ka, which had acquired cult status after more than ten years of production. But while the first version combined striking design with an ultra-low pricetag, the second-generation version is intended to be seen as a more upmarket proposition.

Underneath the Ka is closely related to the Fiat 500, with the two cars sharing their chassis, engine and powertrain. There are other similarities too, with the Ka's dashboard and some of its instruments bearing a strong resemblance to the items in the 500. That's no bad thing, as both are smart, well-finished cars.

It's hard not to feel slightly short-changed by the Ka's exterior design, though. It's clearly inspired by the radical looks which made the original such a hit, but Ford has really toned them down. On the plus side the new Ka is bigger, safer and far better equipped than its predecessor, but it feels like some of the character has been lost in the translation between generations.

Fortunately the Ka is still brilliant to drive thanks to the combination of impressively accurate power steering, a grippy, responsive chassis and decent levels of ride comfort. The basic 1.2-litre petrol engine isn't a particularly powerful unit, although it gives adequate performance in town and delivers excellent fuel economy and CO2 emissions under the magic 120g/km barrier. The 1.3-litre diesel version looks expensive when you consider the marginal fuel savings it will make over the 1.2 petrol.

Fifth Gear overall car ratings

STYLING

Stylish enough, but the derivative styling lacks the punch of the original Ka. You don't have to dig too far to find components shared with the Fiat 500, either.

HANDLING

One area where the Ka excels thanks to keen reactions, brilliant steering and a grippy chassis. You won't find a sharper-handling city car.

COMFORT

Ride quality is good and the driving position can be adjusted to accommodate even the tallest pilots in decent comfort. Like all city cars it feels slightly out of its depth when called on to make longer trips, with lots of noise getting into the cabin.

QUALITY & RELIABILITY

Very well constructed. Some of the materials aren't particularly high-class, but the Ka is well screwed together and feels like it's been built to last.

PERFORMANCE

The 1.2-litre petrol engine has to be worked hard to produce decent performance, delivering a harsh soundtrack when revved. The diesel is punchier and more economical, but it's too expensive to make a real case for itself.

ROOMINESS

There's reasonable room by city car standards, although adults will struggle to fit comfortably in the rear - and the boot is tiny.

STEREO / SAT NAV

The standard audio system does a decent job, but quality is unexceptional and it struggles to deliver good sound definition at cruising speeds.

RUNNING COSTS

Thanks to its frugal engines, sub-120g/km CO2 emissions (bringing cut-price road tax) and cheap servicing, the Ka should be a very attractive way of minimising your motoring outgoings.

VALUE FOR MONEY

The entry level version is attractively priced, but also seriously lacking in kit - you don't even get electric windows. Aircon only becomes available half way up the range and ESP stability control is an extra-cost option on all versions. Compared to better-specified rivals, that's disappointing.

ENVIRONMENT

The Ka has no particularly dirty engines and is average for the class.
